So I just saw that my guinea pig Gizi has one of her eyes squinted and yes it is shrunken just a tiny bit. I've read that young guinea pigs can get an eye condition where the eye lashes rub against the eye surface. I fear she has that, but it is only for guinea pigs under 6 months, Gizi is only 3 months so I really think that she has it. I can see that her eye is not normal because honey ( Gizi's cage mate) has big wide open eyes! And the worst of all is that the closest vet the vet locatot could find was MORE that 60 miles away! So I cant take her to the vet, or at least not a guinea pig vet. I am hoping to go to my local pet shop to see if there are any eye dropper things She is acting very normal, eats normal, runs around crazy at floor time etc... Please give me some ideas on how to help her?

It is not advisable to entrust your local pet store to decide what is wrong with Gizi's eye. Only a veterinary surgeon can make a proper diaganosis and prescribe the correct treatment. There could be many different causes - entropion (inward-growing eyelashes) being just one. The correct treatment for entropion is often surgery (I have a guinea pig with entropion )
Other causes could include infection or hay poke (normally more common); a blocked tear duct.... polyp or growth on the eyelid....a tooth root/dental issue....the start of a URI..or ringworm.....a genetic defect as a result of inbreeding......the list goes on.

The best help you can give her is to take her to a vet.

Please advise your location - it may be we can find a suitable vet that is not on the locator atm but that is nearer you.

Also please put up photos of both of her eyes.....descriptions can be very subjective to the poster concerned so I think I speak for all the Health and illness advisers on here when I say we would prefer to see photos before commenting any further.

It would be best to atleast take her to your local vet, because if its an infections they will be able to tell and do blood work etc and perscribe appropriate medication. If its something that needs surgery or is quite serious then you will need to take her to a piggy savvy vet.

Definitely a vet needs to see her, poor little girl could have a seed or something stuck in there and if she has scratched the cornea an ulcer could develop and that would be very unpleasant indeed. We had a little one about 15 years ago who was born with one eyelid folded under itself luckily she it got better as she got older without surgery but she still needed ointment to help her and stop any infections.

Ok so i washed it out and it turns out she had a small piece of hay in her eyeball. I couldn't believe my eyeball ! :) She if fine now doesn't seem to do it anymore thank goodness, but thanks for the help :)

Agreed, should see vet to make sure cornea isn't scratched. We had some particularly seedy hay a couple of months ago and had to take Frank to the vets on two occasions and Flash once, both of them had to have Fucithalmic drops.

Ok so I have taken her to the vets earlier Today and she is just fine :) There was not scratch or anything :)
