squeak has his op for bladder stones yesterday
the vet said it was a lot of crystals not a stone
they flushed his bladder out

my sister fetched him home for me, and he was really quiet and not moving much which is expected after an op

he wasnt eating or drinking, so was giving him water
gave him antibiotics and metacam at about 7 o clock at night

this morning he was still just lying there, not moving, still not eating or drinking, his bed wasnt wet or messed with poo
so i took him to vets againhe looked ant him, felt his stomach and lots of wee came out
he gave him 3 injections
one pain killer, one to get his gut working and one to rehydrate him
that was 10 o clock this morning and he is still quiet, not moving
i put some grass next to him and he had about 1 or 2 blades, and thats all he has had

I'm starting to get worried about him
I thought he would have been up and about by now
i have him in a cage by himself so i can keep track on his bowel movements, but he hasnt done any

any suggestions on what i should do, or should i just wait, till the injections kick in

i have an appointment on monday to take him back for a check up

thanks

Hi,
Cavy lover had the same ting with her pig who was castrated a couple of weeks ago. The anaesthetic can cause them to be tried and this can go on for up to 7 days, until it is completely out the system. This type of op can cause pain in the urthea tubes (the ones where the wee goes from the bladder to the outside world) depending on how the vet choose to do this. I think the best thing to do atm is to keep him warm, inside and in a quite pace so he can rest. Plus syringe water into him, if you have rehydration fluids use that and syringe food into him, something like recovery food. If you don't have a recovery food mash up domepellets with water and syringe that.

Hope that helps :smitten: :smitten:

the vet gave him some fluid today he said that would rehydrate him for a bit

i feed him supa guinea food, its not pellets, its mixed food so i think this will be hard to mush up

I have not got any recovery food, what kind do i need and i will order some online?

Baby food will do if you dont have any pellets, or could someone possibly get you a small bag of pellets? or your vet might sell cc or science recovery. I do hope he will be ok :-\

Cazza,

Do you know what aneasthetic the vet used.Piggies should be moving around and eating within 2 hours of op.They may not be as active as usual or eat as much, but they should at least be interested in food.Isofluerine given by a competant vet should not cause drowsyness or anorexia.Obviously if the pig is in pain it will be reluctant to move or eat.The painkillers the vet gave should ease the pain.

I have had several pigs undergo lithotomy or blaader washout, and they have all been back to normal within 24 hours.

When I syringe feed I grind up some of the dry mix,it does not matter which one you use)in a coffee grinder to a fine powder, mix with hot water to a thick soup, add a few teaspoons of Critical Care or Recovery, then syringe it into the pig.If the pig is not eating at all,you will have to try and get approx.30 mls of food into him per day.Liquidized veg,can be given alternately with the dry mix soup. This will provide a near normal diet.If the piggy will swallow, cut the favourite veggies into matchstick slithers and put it into his mouth. He might then eat some of it.

Critiacal Care and Recovery are available from a vet but you can get it online.

Other members will be able to give you a website address. I think Planet Guinea and Thistle Cavy Rescue sell it.

Give him one drop per day of Abidec baby vitimins, you can get this in a supermarket or chemist.

It is very important to get some food into him because as piggies are grazers their digestive system starts to break down if they do not eat for 4 hours or more.

I do hope he will be o.k.

this is the list of things he had at the vets

antisedan
baytril
domitor
narketan
rimadyl
vetergesic amps

catheter jackson cat-3f
monocryl ethicon-w3447
vicryl ethicon-w9181
means nothing to me

what kind of baby food should i get
as i have not got a blender or a grinder

I am afraid in this case it could be the aneasthetic causing the lethergy and anorexia. The vet used Vetergesic which is not very good when used on small animals.I would only let Isufluerine be used for my pigs.Unfortunately,a lot of vets will not have Isofluerine installed in their surgery because it is expensive to do so.Money matters more to them than the welfare of the animals.

If you go to a supermarket or chemist you can get small jars of puree for babies. The carrot and potato one is well liked, ..Any of the veggie ones are o.k.Make sure the fruit ones you get do not have any sugar or artificial sweeteners.

I have just got some science selective food so gonna feed him them, well try to.

got some carrot and potaote food nd apple and pear aswell

try him with them

Good luck Cazza, you are going to be doing lots of nursing over the next couple of days. I hope your little guy likes the baby food, mine have usually tolerated it well, but be warned it is messy! All Mary's advice is spot on as usual, sending hugs from my gang.

i have fed him cruched pellets, baby food, bio lapis and cranberry juice

how often am i suppose to feed him
he has not weed or pooed yet.

he seems to be pulling his self along, dragging his back end back feet

i dont know if the operation has damaged anything around his back area
i have looked at his underneathm but don not know what I'm looking for
he has wet poo in his anus so have cleaned it

i am very worried about him

please tell me how often and how much food and water i need to feed him
as i do not want to feed him too much
i tried putting small pieces of cucumber in his mouth but he is not interested

cant get to vets till monday night

please help me

what will happen if he does not pass urine or poo

is there anything i can give him or do to make him wee and poo

Try a small bit of granary or wholemeal bread dipped in the baby food. Sometimes they will eat this.Worth a try. Something else you could try is mashed banana, again some pigs relish this others will turn their nose up.

It is very much trial and error trying to get a pig to eat.,time consuming as well.

You need to get at least 2ml of water into him every hour, more if he will take it.Feed him every 2 hours or so, as much as he will take.Get into a routine with the feeding, you have to fit it in with your own work.

As he is not likely to jump or climb, put a vet bed or something soft into a suitable open top box,you can place this on the table when you are working in the kitchen,or in any room really.Give him a mouthfull of food, then leave him to eat ,while you do something else,as long as you do not leave him unattended, you can work round him ,instead of having to sit with him on your lap all the time.

I would not give him cranberry juice at the moment.

I agree with you that there could be some bruiising or other damage. He really should not be like this.Is there no chance you could get him to a vet before Monday night,I do not think you can wait that long.It does not have to be the vet who operated, you have the right to a second opinion.

The only thing you can do to make him wee and poo is to give lots of water and get some food into him.I know this is not always easy with a pig that does not want to eat,but you will have to persevere.

Hugs and Paws crossed

thanks for your reply

i dont think he will eat anything if i put it in his mouth, he wouldnt eat his cucumber i put in for him.

this is the best vets there is around her and he is not open on a sunday

what should the vets do when i take him

i had him there this morning and he gave him something to start his guts working but obviously it has not worked

Poor little chap. Whereabouts are you, perhaps someone near you can recommend a good guinea vet? They may be the best vets with non-exotics, but unfortunatley doesn't necessarily mean they are guinea savvy.

i am in county durham
and the vets i go to is vets 4 pets at framwell gate moor.
the vets closer to home dont know anything about guinea pigs at all

A difficult situation, perhaps someone else who reads this may be able to recommend a good guinea vet the Co. Durham area? I think Sokel a mod on this board lives in Cumbria and may be able to recommend a good guinea vet in the general area, perhaps send him a PM (don't know how far that is from you, my North Eastern geography is limited)

I really hope he does get better, its heartbreaking seeing them so ill.

i have just noticed that one of his testicles is getting bigger
i dont know if that is because he hasnt been for a wee all day, i dont know

or its because of the op

any ideas
he is really weak and just lying down

Squeek needs a vet asap, this is an emergency. He i has urinary retention which is very painful and life threatening.

I think they usually arrange to meet you at the surgery

did you find a guinea friendly vets? just had a scout around on the internet and not sure if this one is either near you or if you have heard of it , but
they say they see emergencies out of hours and specialise in guinea pigs and exotics

Oh Cazza, so sorry. Do what you can for him. Fingers and toes crossed :-*

I had him to the emergency vet last night and they said he had littius or something, where the stress of the op has shut his gut down.

they said i was doing the right thing to syringe feed him, and gave him another 2 injections to try and start his gut
they gave me science recovery, some zantac, and some, metocloismide ( what ever that is)
they said i could leave him there or take him home and feed him my self
they said to keep him warm and feed him at 6am, 9am, 2pm,and 10pm, with his dry food mixed with water, the science recovery and these drops they gave me.

so it was after 120 clock when i got back, so i fed him his food, and the science recovery and put a hotwaterbottle in his box, put his fleecy bed on top of that, covered him with a fleecy blanket and put a towel on top of the box
i lay on the settee last night next to him, and had the fire on
then at 1.15 i heard him sqeaking quietly so i got up and stroked him and told him it was ok
then he squeaked louder and was shuffling around, and then done it again
i picked him up in him bed and he was lying on his side
he was gone :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
i kept stroking him trying to fetch him round but it was useless

i kept cuddling him for ages

then i put him back in his box and took him to bed with me, put him on the table next to the bed
didnt want him to be alone down stairs

i am going to dig a hole in the gardenn now and bury him

I have still got him lying in his bed and have a tea towel over him

i am glad i took him home and not left him at the surgery

thank you for all your help
its very much appreciated

thank you

Oh no, I'm so very, very sorry, were were all rooting for him, poor little man. You did all you could, that's really upsetting for us reading, I know how awful it was for you and why you didn't want to leave him alone, brings back some very sad memories.

RIP little Squeak x

I am so sorry for your loss. :'( :'( :'( :'(
