Splenectomy

Had another post op check with pretty great news. The incision is pretty much healed, the vet herself said she had to look for it. And got more conclusive results of his pathology.

Looks like something happened to a lobe of his liver that caused it to twist and be cut off from blood supply. Possible reasons was some gas from his gut from a bout of gut stasis or possibly a tumour growing suddenly. The vet said this happened quite quickly, and the lobe did untwist but not soon enough, and that it had become necrotic. It attached to his spleen which either had begun to hemorrhage or was about to, so it needed out too. They are pretty confident that nothing has spread and so should live a normal piggy life. He likely would have passed suddenly if I hadn't acted when I did. So he will have an ultrasound in about 3 months to see how his insides are going.

Russell himself is moving and eating great. He just seems so confident and interested in the world around him. I am so proud. Both him and Owen had their 4th pentosan injection and he is also moving great.

I really thank you guys for your positivity, made my stress be a little lower lol.

:yahoo: Well done Russell! what a plucky little man, such a zest for life. So glad it’s all gone so well for him x

He is such a zesty boy! My vet even speculates that as he heals he might even popcorn again. I remember tearing up when my dear old Amber started popcorning again after starting meds for her heart :') I would love to see him moving like that again. He has started following me around when from inside his cage when I walk by in case I might have snacks from any direction!

That would be lovely if he did start popcorning again, you never know. I think you have a brilliant vet there.
Perhaps you could ask the staff to add it to the Worldwide recommended vet list which the health team keep, I think there is one? @sport_billy

Do you have the name and address of the vet @baleofhay i am sure we have list somewhere.... to add it to

Sure, it's the Bird and Exotic Animal Clinic at 19 Ponting St, Williamstown 3016, Victoria, Australia.

Every time I wrote "vet", it was one of about 4 professionals who I spoke with as a few different people treated Russell. All are highly trained and passionate. They always know what their colleagues have done, so communicate extremely well.

They are a pricey clinic but you get what you pay for. To me it's worth it. I used to go to another clinic who I also recommend but as my city has been in lockdown, I've used this one more as it's closer and am so glad I gave them the chance to show me just how good they are!

Edit: they really do see and are trained in everything, a few years ago they helped my brother's goldfish!
