Specialist Vets In Abergavenny Area

I am new to the forum, I came across it whilst googling for a specialist vet in South Wales (Abergavenny area). I noticed the vet locator and there is a recommended vet in Gloucestershire which is not too far away. Could someone confirm these are specialist vets with specific knowledge of Guinea pigs or just recommended vets that people have had good experiences with. Pepsi has been ill for several weeks and though my vets are lovely they don't know what is wrong, I wd like to seek guidance from a specialist.
 
The vets on the vet locator are vets recommended by forum members . If it is the vet practice I think you have seen on our locator , it may be worth checking to see if the named vet still works there.

Would you object if I asked a staff member to change the title of your thread to " Specialist Vets in Abergavenny Area " ? This may help you get an answer to your question .
 
:wel: to the forum ! I'm really sorry to hear Pepsi isn't well . Obviously, we can't diagnose or advise treatment on here - but if you would like to tell us your guinea's symptoms, we may be able to give some advice on what you should be discussing with your vet .

Thanks. She came back off holiday with a wet rear stained end. Smelt of urine this lasted days, usually very clean piggie. Took her to vet who scanned her she had two huge cysts on ovaries, one was the size of vets thumbs fingernail. She had an operation, thankful came through, scar healed nicely. Still wet rear end, and discharge, difficulty passing stools. Went on to two different antibiotics not cleared up. I feel she may have abscess rear end. She was losing weight but last few days she has put on 35g. Vet said effectively take her home you have had a couple more months with her, nice vets but wanted another opinion. Sorry lengthy reply she is round four and a half an indoor pig who loves people.
 
I believe so, I don't feel my vets are that confidence with pigs. We seem to be on a roller coaster ride, yesterday stools very small and urine dark. Today she is back to normal stools, she loves the recovery food which I am supplementing with her normal veg and hay. She is having vit C in her water. She seems quite active today, she has finished the antibiotics but I can feel a lump at rear endwhich I have mentioned to vet.

Could you get to Mark Bridges he has a great reputation?
 
Unfortunately I have difficulty with driving. My vets recommended a specialist exotic vets in Swindon but it would be impossible to get to. Should I try another local vets for a second opinion? We don't need to syringe food she eats it off the spoon. Thankful son home from school now she tends to eat more when we are with her. Thanks for all the support and guidance.
 
Oh no how awful for you. I had a piggy who kept wetting after a spay (it was a little while after when it got worse again) and it turned out she had quite marked arthritis in her lower spine so was in pain when toiletting. It was something we could manage with pain relief until she was ready to pass on. You could always try ringing round a few vets and asking if they have anyone with a particular interest in guinea pigs. My vets isn't a specialist but is very knowledgeable
 
Checking for arthritis like Lady Kelly mentions is a good idea. That would need an xray. Arthritic pigs can be in pain like Kelly mentions which means that she might be too achey to move when she wees. But they can also suffer from muscle loss which might be a factor in her weeing on herself.

Which antibiotics have you tried, and for how long?

I can't answer your question fully, but if the vet on the locator which you refer to in your original post is Vale Vets in Dursley, I have seen that at least one forum member takes her piggies to see Rachel Mowbray there and thinks she is very good. Alternatively Sundean Vets in Lydney is not on the locator, but Windwhistle Warren Rabbit Rescue also used to rescue piggies and uses them for their pigs and rabbits.

Vets who are "specialists" in guinea pigs are very thin on the ground, but those who are recommended on here have good knowledge and experience of guinea pigs and their ailments.

Hope you're able to get a second opinion and get Pepsi better soon :)
 
It's definitely worth a second opinion. The two things that a wet bum make me wonder about is either a urinary tract infection (which can cause leakage leading to a wet bottom) or arthritis, depending on age. Sometimes arthritis in the back causes them to sit hunched, which can lead to them sitting in their pee (my elderly pig had this problem in her last months, she had both chronic bladder issues and a bit of arthritis. We gave her very frequent hind-end baths to keep her skin clean. She was near 7 at the time, so an old lady piggie.) Hopefully a second opinion can give you some guidance. Have they tested her urine for blood and white cells and bacterial products?

Many thanks for you guidance Lydney is not too far away, we have a rescue centre here called all creatures great and small may talk to them.

She is dry at the moment, though I have been giving her rear end baths every couple of days, there is still staining. She has put on 55g and is now weighing 822g in the last couple of days, she was down to 730g. My concern is now she is off antibiotics that the problem will return. She is approx four and a half. She is a minx she only wants to eat if we are with her, she demands a lot of attention, she is an indoor piggie who prefers company. Thanks for your comments.
 
Just to up date. Pepsi passed away yesterday, very upsetting the last hour as she was fitting. Totally numb as she was a real character, house trained and lived indoors, she was nick named the phantom sock stealer as she use to grab socks and stash them in her home. Very difficult few days ahead. I wish there was a list of exotic specialists on the Internet, a lot of vets seems to advertise they are, but I have some doubts.
