Spay Wound Help Please

My 4ish year old sow crunchie was recently spayed, 16 days ago. Her wound was checked 5 days ago and vet said it was fine. Its smoothing out top and bottom but still raised and hard in the middle. It was like this at the time of vet check and hasnt changed since. I got her out tonight and two of the scabs have blood on them (not dripping just blood when dabbed). I'm not worried about the scabs as much as i am the swelling in the middle where one bit of the blood is. Does anyone have any experience with spay wounds? Thanks

Should also mention shes on septrin for poss uti (small amount dried blood on vulva which can only be coming from bladder). I cleaned her wound with cooled boiled salt water afterwards, it didnt bleed any further.
 
I recentaly had a sow who had this opp, scare looks identical to her's !

But as for the other problems, personaly l would talk to my vet
 
If she's already on antibiotics then hopefully that should be sorting out any underlying infection. As wounds go it looks pretty good, it might just be a stray stitch that's working it's way out, the body will push them out as they heal sometimes. Scars can be pretty lumpy and hard for a while. They take a while to mature and become more flexible.

The major warning signs to look out for are redness, heat (warmer than surrounding skin), pain and ooze. Red blood isn't necessarily a bad thing from stitch hoes as it's clean... oozy other things are more of a problem. But if you are in any way worried then please go back and see your vet (ideally the one who did the op as they will know exactly what they did where and why!)

Good luck but she looks pretty good to me (as far as I can tell from a photo) I've dealt with chronic wounds in people at work and a nasty post-bladder stone op in a piggy of mine so I know a little bit ;)
 
Crunchies wound has been getting flatter everyday and no redness or swelling, but yesterday i noticed a bit of suture sticking out the side of the scar about 2cm long.. I couldnt get to a vet as i have been super busy with my other sow who sadly doesnt have much time left in this world, its been constant care with her around everyday life.
Tonight i went to check the suture and there was a small dot of white liquid (assuming pus) coming from beside the stitch. I gently wiggled the loose suture and it has come out straight, with a clump of crust on the middle. I gave the hole it came from a gentle squeeze and two more dots of pus came out (literally a pin head size). I gave it a bathe with salt water and pat dry. Theres nothing to see wound wise except a tiny pin hole where suture came from. She has just finished a week of septrin for suspected uti. Does this warrant more antib's? Heres the suture.

I would give the vet a ring and ask to speak to them about this. It wouldn't hurt to have a longer dose of AB's to ward off any possible infection
 
Speaking to your vet is always a good idea. It may not be pus but just the tissue beside the stitch which is coming away, which is normal as they get pushed out of the body but it doesn't hurt to see your vet as it's hard for us to tell online and we aren't vets.

I wouldn't be overly worried though unless there is redness and heat as well which are indicators of infection...

Let us know how you get on and well done for being so vigilant with the wound.

Crunchie had 2 hard pieces of pus/crust on her wound this morning. On both areas that she scratched and made bleed a couple days ago. I cleaned off the crust and there is now yellow pus leaving both sites when its gently squeezed. Got vets at 2pm.. I'm worried this doesnt heal as the hole at top of wound has gotten very deep literally overnight :(

I have another sow thats in heart failure.. Everything has to happen at once!

I've given her a dose of septrin at the moment to kick start fighting any infection.. Is septrin no use for wounds? She cant have baytril anyway, she ended up with a rock hard abdomen and stopped pooping when on it before, and iv never used it since. Can i get zithromax in uk? Never had it before. Thanks for your reply.
 
For all antibiotics, it depends on what the infection is what works best. The vet can test to see what bacteria is present to see what will work best. But continuing her Septrin just now isn't a bad plan til you see the vet. You should always finish the course anyway unless advised otherwise by a vet or they are not likely to be affective. Both Marobocyl and Zithromax are available in the Uk and ok for use in piggies. If your vet isn't confident to prescribe anything apart from Baytril or Septrin then maybe they can seek advice from another exotics vet?

You are doing the right thing to see the vet and it may not be as bad as you think.

Dtry not to worry, even massive wounds like my boy had, heal in time with the right care... Here's his thread so you can see. Don't panic though his was not a normal case! Hopefully your girl is much more straight forward... It's a bit graphic so not one if you are squeamish!

Hi my Yogi was prescribed Zithromax, I'll be sure to ask for some more if I decide to get her spayed. We are at Ashleigh vets UK.

These stories of post op are scaring me! But once the piggies conditions clear up it'll reduce the risk of cancers and obviously stop the formation of future cysts.
 
The wound looks ok to me. The raised bit is just the healing process and will take some time to go down and settle. Sometimes they have a little bit of suture reaction which can cause this raised area. The scabs were probably just interfered with by your piggie.

All looks good to me.

Hope she continues to recover ok.

Thank you all for the replies. I was told to continue with septrin for a week then recheck. I have never ised zithromax but will keep it in mind thank you.

@Abi_nurse the pictures of the wound were posted on sunday. Crunchie had yellow crust forming, which i cleared away and gently squeezed wound, to which yellow pus came out. A further squeeze and pus came out at the bottom of the incision- there is infection spread throughout the wound, but my lancing and cleaning has stopped is forming into pockets (abcess). I have basically to continue doing as i was already.

Thanks, my OH is a doctor and I work in healthcare too and have had some wound care training so it was ok, but it's not for the faint hearted.... He did so well but I lost him in January this year. He did brilliantly and was so good about the whole thing but I think the tumours he had must have been else where as well as we couldn't keep his weight up, it was just his time to go :(

I think your girl will do just fine :)

Don't worry, I haven't been on the forum much since then so not everyone knew...

Sounds like she is on good form so must be feeling good ;)
 
Septrin is fine, it should do the job, Zithromax is the best one for any skin/abscess issues though, the stuff works like magic & would probably clear it up much quicker than Septrin will. Don't worry about the bumpiness, her wound looks fine. My piggy Petal still has a bumpy scar down her tummy from her hysterectomy this time last year, sometimes it's scar tissue & won't lie flat x
