I work in a pet shop, and today a lady came in who said she had two guinea pigs. She said she was going away for christmas so had to take the guinea pigs with her... but she didn't want to take their cage as it was 'too big and bulky'. So her 'solution' was to take both of them in a small cat carrier .. and keep them in there for four days! WHAT? She seemed like she knew nothing about her guinea pigs, what toys do they like? are they allowed to chew things? she didn't even know what food they were on! Worrying ... very worrying. We all told her it was not appropriate to keep them in the cat carrier and she 'agreed' but.. she didn't buy anything else to keep 'them in.

Second rant .. also had a lovely lady come in with her staffy dog, who I was making a big fuss of, he was beautiful and called socks. Anyway I saw this lady in the shop giving the dog proper evils, then when the lady with the dog left the woman who had been giving evils started going on about how she 'doesn't understand why people get aggressive dogs like that'. I had to stop myself from just slapping her. I brought up the idea 'it's not the breed, it's how they're brought up' but she didn't buy it. Apparently it's 'in them to be aggressive'. Despite the fact this staffy was licking my face off... hmm.

Third rant! We've recently started selling animals (sadly). And one of our policies is that we don't sell animals to be bred from. Anyway, somebody came in and said they wanted a hamster to breed from, so obviously the person serving said sorry we can't, we don't sell animals to breed. So the customer suddenly changed their story and said they just wanted the hamster as a pet. We didn't buy it and they were told sorry, we have the right to refuse the sale as we believe you'll breed them. So the customer complains to head office... and what to head office do? take the customer's side! They said 'you should have just sold the hamster to them to keep them happy' What's the point in having the policy then?!?! GRRR!

Last rant (sorry I'm nearly done) had a woman in and she saw the guineas we had and she went off on one on how she doesn't understand why people would keep guinea pigs as pets, they're boring, unaffectionate etc etc.... I let her know she was wrong ;)

Ahhh I feel slightly better now. I think I need a new job!

I could never work in a pet shop, I'd probably shoot all the customers.

There are so many people that know absolutely nothing about their pets, it's ridiculous. And very scary. No wonder there's so much cruelty.

Ohh people can be so annoying!:x

Think I'll stick with the animals:))

ARGH! malletheadmalletheadmalletheadmallethead

that all really ****es me off too!!:a19:

I could never work in a pet shop. Hope you feel better for the rant! x

It's good sometimes when there's people who genuinly care about their animals and what's best for them but others just aren't interested. We also refused a sale of a hamster because it was for a present and the woman got huffy. The person whos animal it is going to be has to be present to learn how to handle them and know they're getting it etc. E.g A woman came in with her son, looked at the guineas, we showed her and her son how to handle them, went through everything with them, she brought everything under the sun for them then was like 'we're not getting them yet honey' (to her son) went out to the car... then she came running back and was like 'can I reserve them please! surprise for the child' which is ok cos he knew he wanted them etc.

Grrr some people do not understand animals, I have 2 staffys and 25 piggys, They are loving and cuddly, I hate people that judge animals just because of their breed, My dogs are so soppy :(|) and as for guinea pigs being boring, Noooo way they are cute cuddly and very funny to watch, some people eh! :0

Actually it is quite frightening that just anybody can buy an animal:(

I think alot of people forget that an animal has feelings like the rest of us, and think ohh I am bored of it now and stop feeding and caring for that animal properly it's so sad.

You hear people say oh it's only a hamster or guinea pig etc but they hurt and suffer in the same way we do and like babies are totally reliant on us to keep them healthy.x

What are your staffies like with the pigs? xx

In the summer when my piggys are running free in the garden my staffys take no notice of them,They are used to them now, The piggys dont take any notice of the dogs either. Staffys are really lovely dogs,I know that in the wrong hands that terrialbe things happen, in the right hands they are fantastic pets x)

So true :) Some people use them as 'status' whereas if you bring them up right they really are one big soppy mess. Another staffy came in and she had learnt the command 'hug!' it was sooo cute. you kneel down and she gets up puts her paws over your shoulder and head on your shoulder and stays still. bless!

25? that went up since we last spoke!"!!

Lol I know I keep telling myself its time to stop! I have promised myself not to get anymore piggys its so hard to say no to one in desperate need tho.
I think the last 10 I got have been used for breeding or were neglected. My last 2 were the ones that were dumped outside p@h. Oh I am a sucker for a needy piggy lol :(|)

I think in the wrong hands any dog would be bad.

I volunteer at Cheltenham Animal Shelter and out of all the dogs we have in (most are staffies) the breed that is the most friendly and responsive to humans are staffies. I can't wait to be able to rescue some x)x)

your right, I think they are very mis-understood, I think thats why there are so many in need of homes :(

Omg some people are just so bloody irrating.
Must be more frustrating for you working in a pet shop and dealing with these kind of people who have animals.
In my job I get dumb people in all the time asking/telling me stuff and I just think derrr but when it involves a pet/animal then its just really upsetting x

It good that there are people like you working in pet shops that sell animals atleast you can inform them of what's right and wrong.
I have a collie x g/s and he gets funny looks when we walk past old people or people with small children like he's going to pounce, thing is he's so stupidly soft it's unbelievable although he hates men especially those in uniform which stems back from how he was treat as a puppy (they don't forget).
In my house the Bichon Frise Bleu is more likely to attack you than the big dog lol although if you shout kiss to Bleu he flys at you and licks your face which is quite funny for visitors lol.

We recently adopted a staffy and i quite often get looks from people grr, me and my OH have never met such an affectionate dog! She just loves people and really hasn't got a bad bone in her (well apart from her liking our underwear, she ate two pairs of my pants off the clothes drier on Tuesday rolleyes:red) Shes fine with our piggies too :) like people have said they react to how they are treated.

The thing about the staffy just made me laugh. Peoples ignorance can be amusing sometimes.
Staffies are lovely. They're dopey, soppy...Loyal and loving. I've never met a Staffy that was aggressive.
You can TRAIN them to be but you can with ANY dog.
We had one when I was growing up, my mum told me that when I was a baby, he'd sleep by my cot and she could never get him away from my pram because he was so protective. I remember that he'd follow me everywhere and he would just stroll in and sit on you if you were sat in his favorite spot, by the fire :)) Ben was just beautiful and I've been in love with Staffies my whole life, thanks to him.

They're very protective of their families.
Maybe she had a bad experience and I know that...Sadly...People have had Staffies attack them but again, like any dog, you can train them to be nasty.
Some dogs really are just nasty...And sadly it's a matter of when and not if...When it comes to them getting aggressive with someone.
But I have to agree that generally it's how you raise them.

It's sad they have the reputation. I remember walking with one of my friends in a car park and there was a staff in the car and he moved away, I was like 'what are you doing?' n he said 'aren't they those dangerous illegal dogs?' 'noo.. that's a staffy. not a pit bull.' Not that pit bulls are always dangerous either... bleh

Did he have white paws by any chance? There was a animal rescue program on earlier this week, where somebody had found a stray staffy and they named him socks, he was adopted by a 40-50 year old lady.

Yes, he was brindle coloured and I think she said he wasn't that old and she looked about that age. Although I suppose socks might be a common name for dogs with white paws..

Aw cute. Looks very similar although she's brown and he was brindle :) cute doggies.

i know i hate it when people have no idea how to luck after pets, i was just in the pet shop(buyin xmas prezzies) and theres a dog with its family and they are buying it a reindeer outfit. personally i think its just wrong. i also dont like it when people buy prezzies for children who may not even want it, though i do have to say piggies are on my xmas list but at least i care for mine and now how to treat animals. when I'm older i want to work at a rescue and at the mo me and my bff are starting fundraising for the rspca after christmas xxxxwhich reminds me happy christmas everyone xx

Ceaser Milan (dog whisperer for those who don't know' uses a pitbull to show other dogs how to behave :))
