Yeah I did use sudafed on my piggie for 3 days maximum and it cleared up her runny nose. If it is an allergy it could be one of many different things and it isn't always that easy to find the cause. Hope you manage to find out though.

This is a quote I found from another post on the site about baby Sudafed.

If the breathing is wheezy, try giving 0.3ml of peadriatic Sudafed.just one dose. This c an work wonders and it will not interreact with the antibiotic.Sudafed does contain chemicals and I do not normally recommend anything that does, but I have used this medicine over the years on my pigs, and it saved the life oof one boar.

Sorry don't know how to quote it.

thanks everyone for your help! i will keep you all updated on Scruffy all let you all know if there is anything that has worked for him! :)

paedriatric Sudafed at the dose rate of 0.3mls per day is safe for gps.Do not give for more than 3 days. One dose is normally sufficient.I find it useful for snuffles in gps with allergy .

I have also used this drug in conjuction with Septrin for gps with severe breathing problems,It once saved the life of one of my boars.I do not very often recommend over the counter drugs, but this does work and I have used it on several of my own gps over a number of years with no problem.Peter used to use it for his pigs and my vet o.k`s it.

Unless you are sure that ratling, wheezing or any abnormal breathing is an allergic reaction to something, take the gp to a vet as it will need Septrin.URTIs can kill if not treated quickly.

My Guinea, T Bag, has been on two courses of Baytril recently. The first for 10 days, then a week later his URI came back so we kept him on it for 3 weeks until it cleared up again. Now it's come bacck, so I'm gonna take him to the vets first thing tommorow. Whoever knew guinea pigs could be so expensive!

ask your vet to try septrin this time as the baytril isn't working for ypour piggy. also make sure your piggy is on a probiotc to protect his tummy from the antibiotics. by the way love the name of teabagx>>x>>x>> hoping he gets better real soon:)p:)p:)p

hi everyone!

Thanks for the advice on the sudafed, i shall have a look into this.

My GP was on Baytril which didnt clear it up, then about a week later it cleared for a week, then it has come back. I cannot suss out whether it i an allergy ot URI?! The vets dont seem to know either so I feel stuck!

I weighed Scruffy this morning and he hasnt put on loads of weight, Ive noticed recently he sometimes quiet, but then other times he's fine!

Should I try the sudafed first maybe then go back to vets?

Mutton Chops, how is your piggy today? ANy progression?

For piggies that are under the weather like this and having to have repeated treatments I would recommend you start them on some metatone tonic straight away. It is available from Boots etc and is a great boost for piggies who are poorly. I think it would be especially beneficial to the eldery pig mentioned in this thread. Dose at 0.5ml once a day for a week then 0.3ml daily for a further 2 weeks. It is just vitamins etc so will do no harm but hopefully will boost the poorly piggies system and help them fight off whatever nasties are lurking about!

thanks starshine, I will have to get shopping in Boots at lunch today!

Hes not really ill, he just sometimes lies out, like last night, he laid out under his wanter bottle, which he doesnt usually do, and stayed i nhis bed alot after that. But then other times hes fine.

Another example is he used to run around freely in the living room and squeak madly but i put him on the floor now, and he doesnt even move from the spot?

sudafed

i still think you should take piggy to the vet instead of home remedies, but i have heard that you use the sudafed for babies and use the baby dose.
i would go to the vet and ask for septrin or perhaps go to another vet.
good luck with what ever you decide, hugs to you and you piggy xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

blueberry and scruffy

moonie,
and i replied to your PM. hoping scruffy is doing better today, hoping blueberry is doing well too.
i think either try the sudafed or perhaps try a different vet as the antibiotics aren't helping.
good luck to both piggies send hugs and healing vibesxx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

thanks choloe!

I am going to get some sudafed at lunch today, Scruffy nose was really running last night and sneezing. Ive noticed that his white fur around his nose is gone a little brown, like dirt - from when he cleans his face hes wiping the snot around and its staining his fur - is this bad?:{

Did you try the sudafed with your piggy? I want to make sure that its ok for them and find out how well it worked for the piggie....... Is there a chance it could make things worse? :Ayociexp113:
Sudafed will not make the gp worse,it can in fact work well. The dose rate is 0.3mls per day,.Do not give for more than 3 days. One dose is often sufficient anyway.I have used this drug on my pigs for many years with good results, and it can be a life saver for gps with allergic asthma type symptoms.
Get the one formulated for nasal congestion in children.

I know Peter used to recommend Metatone but it is no longer considered to be good for them. The only vitimin supplement a poorly pig needs is Vitimin C to boost the immune system.Too much of other minerals and vits could cause harm.

Whoooooooo!

She must be feeling a little better. She's been going up and down the ramp again!:<>

mutton chops that is brilliant news! i so glad bubbleberry is feeling better

my update, scruffy is still snotty and sneezy, he is quite bad today and bit wheezy this morning but hes fine in himself. I am hoping to take them both to vets when i get the little one soon.
