Thursday night putting the Hens and Ducks away for the night the Cockerel decided I was a threat and hooked his very sharp spurs into my leg.1ABD601C-4C02-48B3-8479-57167F021B5C.webp408122A8-C749-4121-8181-962FC4F2811E.webp

I didn’t know cockerels would do that. Gosh. Such a shock. I’d be scared to go near him again. ☹️. Hope it stops hurting soon.

Oh wow, Dave, that must have been a real shock for you. And looks nasty. Glad you’ve had the wounds cleaned and a tetanus shot. Has it put you off helping out with the chickens?

Cockerells can be very nasty. Before I was married, my Mum and Dad had hens and one went broody so Mum got some fertilised eggs and popped them under the hen, one of the chicks was a baby boy. We raised him from a baby and thought he was quite tame but he was completely lethal and nearly scratched one side of my face to pieces. My Dad had to "despatch" him after that.

I think we be hatching some eggs this year and sadly this guy will be replaced
I know it’s very harsh but it’s 2 nd time he’s had a go

Oh gosh! How dare you threaten his manliness Dave :)) Seriously though, glad you are ok and hopefully it will all be healed soon

I was attacked when I was a kid, extremely painful punctures, I feel bad for you. Once they start this they will continue. Wear long pants and carry a stick with you when you go out to the pen. If you keep him you might want to pen him in a separate cage to keep yourself and others safe.

We can’t keep him separated as it’s his job to “look after his girls” if you know what I mean
I’m very watchful now
Lol 😆

That’s not him but he’s just as good looking
We had 4 other cockerels last year but we dispatch them it’s harsh and yes it really upset me but the poor hens were getting no peace at all and we saved the best
I know of one very feisty cockerel in a village that was constantly attacking workmen laying some cabling many years ago along with anybody walking past it. Everyone was terrorised by it, especially children. He conveniently ended up under the replaced pavement, the cable men denied everything, it was a relief to everyone but the owner
