I'm so sorry you lost Spot. ((HUGS)) to you. You absolutely did your best for him. It seems like he had some unaddressed problem for a long time before you found him and there's nothing your or Spot could have done to overcome them.

Thank you all so much for your kind messages. Devastated to loose Spot, I really thought we were in with a chance. I will update about his 2 friends when I get chance. They are munching on spinach as I type.
