Shuddering

When my RB Sheepy and Rupert had their issues with bloat I’m sure we continued with their metacam/loxicom, don’t ever remember it being an issue. She’ll still be sore so I’d think she needs it myself!?
With the Pro C it’s just a pinch to a couple of mls of water, it’s the one I always have here :)
How is she today @Black piggies? Sending hugs x

Thank you. She's no better and no worse. I haven't dealt with this before and cavy savvy vet isn't back till 4th Oct.
Have put her back on pain meds so she should be more comfortable at least. It's worrying when don't get the right advice 😕, reassuring to have the advice here of people who've been there. Thanks about the Pro C. Great name Sheepy btw 😊

I’m glad she’s stable, so sorry you’re going through everything without your usual vet though :(
Yes I’d feel the same way, at least she’s comfortable on her pain meds bless her. Hope you both have a good day x

Here’s my Sheepy and his guide pig best mate Reggie (pic of a pic!) He had cataracts bless him, and definitely suited his name! :)

Aw that's just what I was imagining Sheepy would look like 😂😍 How gorgeous. Isn't that lovely he had his guide pig.

It was his nickname at the rescue I helped at years ago, so I had to keep it of course, suited him so much! They were completely in love 😍 And he was Jess’s first husband when we lost lovely Reggie ❤️

5 year old Shadow still isn't right.

3 days ago, non cavy savvy vet saw Shadow and said keep giving emeprid that was prescribed 5 day ago "for a few days" for air bloat, but she's still juddering breathing and less active.

She's been drinking more for a while and may have kidney disease. 3.5 weeks ago she had xray and bladder stone found, expected to be passed now, and blood, protein, infection in urine.

Urinalysis few days ago was fine.

On xray possible diffuse shadowing on lung, not considered a worry by vet at that time.

Her weight has been the same, as of vet visit 3 days ago. Waiting for batteries for my scales today to weigh her again. She seems to be eating and pooing, but this funny poo today.

Hi, sorry, I started a new thread as my questions seem to have got lost in the last one, and due to the suggestion that the thread title gave a different impression to what was happening.

Hi

I am ever so sorry and hope that the lung can be checked properly.

I sincerely hope that you can hang in there until next week. The poos look OK to me - they are still solid and nicely fat.
Step in with syringe feeding top-up if the weight is going down over 50g overall and step in with intensive feeding support in case any weight loss speeds up and a piggy is losing more than 30-50g; you will know when you need to step up any care and try to see whether you can get an emergency slot.

We can't unfortunately speculate about what might be the underlying problem. The symptoms are not distinctive enough. :(

PS: I would like to ask you kindly to please not start a new thread for every update or question on the same ongoing case and to keep all pertinent information together so we have a time line and can look up what has been said and done before. We are NOT social media relying on generating as many new threads as possible.
We are currently all very busy and not able to be on every day and read every single thread in this section, so unless you help us, the quality of our answers and the support we can provide will suffer accordingly as we are going to sooner or later miss out on a crucial development.

You can always pick up an ongoing thread by the 'Find Thread/Your threads' button by the top bar or via the search option in the same area. Thank you. ;)

Thank you for time and advice. Do you think this could just still be bloat or too hard to tell? Should I carry on the emeprid till 4th Oct? The vet just said a few days.

Thank you so much 😊

The different vet was great, did a thorough assessment, no "it's only a guinea pig" vibes.

He thought her breathing looked bad and there may be shadowing on her lungs on the recent x-ray, but her lungs sounded clear.
He said that her abdomen was air filled, possibly due to the antibiotic she's on, and he gave emeprid 0.6ml twice a day for her guts. He thinks that might be making breathing a strain for her. She's eating and pooing well, so not in crisis stasis.
He'll review in 2 days and possibly take her off antibiotics.

He said to lay off veg, but that grass and dandelion leaves are OK. Any thoughts on that?

(Shadow may be sneaking an advert on here asking for a new home, as she lives for her veg!)

She's really getting to be an old girl now, but I'm not ready to lose her yet, feel quite relieved now.

The advice sounds OK but I would be careful with fresh grass in wet conditions (can make piggies with a more tender digestion worse) and where the bloating gets noticeably worse so I would feed only small quantities at first unless they are already on it and not feed when the grass is damp. You can give her a little fresh herb in the same token.

Please carry on if there is no noticeable improvement or stop and see whether things are getting noticeable worse.

See my answer to the fresh food in my last post.

Thanks. She's not used to grass. I've been giving her very little, non bloating veg. Is that still right?

If there is no noticeable bloating or discomfort afterwards, then she is OK.
The problem with the gut is whether outside factors (pain in the surrounding areas/lower body, pressure on the gut or heart insufficiency etc.) cause the bloating or whether there is a problem in the gut itself. In your case, the problem is more likely situated outside the gut, but that is just my own feeling.

As the vet you have seen sounds competent, I would keep to their advice within reason - don't start feeding grass if it hasn't been on the menu regularly and keep to small bits of her favourite veg instead for quality of life as long as it doesn't make things noticeably worse.

Thank you. I'll feed a little of favourite veg. Based on what you've said your feeling might be, it would make sense of why emeprid and poop soup and Pro C isn't helping the breathing. I think I'll need to get her seen sooner than next Monday. She's not been out her hidey by choice at all today.

Have made an appnt with Kim Northampton, Thursday morning. Often when I go there, I get the proper diagnosis, like Shadow's sister having an inoperable eye abscess that had twisted her jaw, but it's often the end of the road too. Feel worried :(

I've just come back from my local vets, and they have confirmed some of my concerns. :(

At least you will know what is going on and can make any decisions with a clearer mind and heart. When you are braced for the worst case scenario, anything else can only be better. Kim will have more medical options and be able to buy you a bit more time.

Aw sorry you've had that confirmation :( Yuck. Yes it's always better to know, so can look after them better for their final stretch.

Massive hugs. Good luck seeing Kim on Thursday, at least you’ll find out what’s going on, really hoping for some good news for you and your gorgeous girl. Thinking of you both and sending lots of healing vibes to Shadow x

Thank you for all the supportive comments and sharing advice and experiences ❤️ Shadow passed yesterday, she had advanced heart failure. I appreciate you giving your gut feeling @Wiebke that something else may be going on, as it helped prompt me to Northampton for a proper diagnosis and Shadow was put at peace.

I’m so sorry you lost Shadow. You were doing all you could for her. She was a special piggy and knew she was loved. Popcorn high over the bridge. Take care ❤️

I am always sorry when a bad gut feeling comes true but happy that it has spared Shadow any further unnecessary suffering. You have done for him whatever you could for as long as you could but you have also given him a peaceful and kind journey to the Bridge when his time had come. You have not failed him in any way.

Please try to remember the good times with him. We will always miss a beloved one but there are also lots of precious memories left so that the loss is never total.
