Lucinda I have a battery operated cage fan - something like that would be great for a long journey.
I cant remember where i got it from but I'm pretty sure some pet supplies places sell them
I think the one i have is more for dog crates but i dont care - it does the job and the batteries last ages

Defo Starla, it's like the MMR debate have it and you may have autism (if you believe that) don't have it and your child my die of measles! I know what I'd choose!

Pigs are ok today they have had lemon and lime icecubes. Amber popcorned right off! Tika was panting a bit so brought her indoors and put a fan on her (she goes in the pig shed sometimes just for company.)

It's bad enough for us adults, I'm suffering with nasal congstion today with my hayfever but also had a headache this morning through lack of fluids and I drink 8 glasses a day which proves how hot it is. If we are suffering then furries will be too if not more so. :)

Re: Safety tips and hot weather in the UK - sun stroke, ear sunburn and dehydrat

I am struggling with the heat even with my blinds shut and windows open.
we can wear clothes and take them off. I have a strange desire to walk around naked, I am struggling that much,
But out piggies, they have hairy clothes and can't take them off.

That said, I run some flannels under the cold tap and place my pigs on a towel with the flannel over them for a small amount of time - like the heat stroke cure, just to cool them down. They like that and are happy to sit still.

How do you make lemon and lime icecubes Louise?

I use water and just a hint of lemon and lime put in the frezer and there you go. :) Not too much of the fruit though as they can be tarty. :)

Do fans help cool guinea pigs though? They only work for humans because it's help evaporates the sweat, cooling our body.

Wow, I never realised a thread would cause so much discussion. All good stuff so long as its true and not dangerous. I cant see anything like this yet.

The use of suncream on GP`s ears is controversial. I would not have thought a little rubbed over their little ears would do any harm. But this is my personal view.

Heatstroke and dehydration is deadly and it happens so quickly with GP`s - within minutes.

If anyone sees anything unreliable or silly to the point of causing even `possible` harm please report it to a moderator immediately so that it can be taken out.

A good idea SunshineAndTwinke cos its got vitamin C. I will give mine a choice - water or your recipe. I`ll watch which bottle goes down the quickest and let you know. ;)

A good scientific observation ashleypride. Even if a fan doesn't cool the piggy it surely cant harm it.

Thanks for the advice guys. :)

As for sunblock, I am so photosensitive I can't go out without Factor 50 all over. I burn in moments. I loathe the summer, I wear dark glasses all the time and use a brollie as a parasol.

Roll on autumn.

I think it's strange how people put their pigs outside in the run all day when it's boiling out there. Even with shade on the run it is still really hot! I think it's better to keep the pigs inside and try to keep the room cool and give them things in their cage (already mentioned in this thread) to help to keep them cool.

Last summer I froze a couple of those blue plastic things meant for coolboxes and wrapped them in kitchen roll so they weren't too cold to lie against. I don't know if they ever used them though! Also, you can fill a bowl with water or pure, unsweetened fruit juice and add some chopped fruit, freeze it to make a fruit lolly :)
Most important I think though is just plenty of fresh, cold water, and a nice shady spot for them to chill out in.

We have recently adopted an albino gp - Snowdrop (how original ;)) and number two son was wondering whether she would get sunburn on her ears because pigs can get sunburn. After following this thread I'm beginning to wonder too. Re sunblock, you can get non-chemical ones, usually containing zinc oxide to create a physical barrier to reflect the sun's rays. I particularly like Liz Earle's SPF 15 or 25. It does take a little more rubbing in and 'settling' time if you don't want to go out looking like a clown, but that's probably not a big issue for the piggies, just us!

Was surprised to hear that gp's quite like lemon and lime - I would have thought that citrus fruits were too sour - you learn something new everyday! :)
