Rivervixen’s piggies

Lexi is so traumatised when I cut her nails she won't even eat a bribe. I have to have somebody to hold her while I snip away.
I did my four today, all quite easy apart from Kiki who has huge black thick nails. I always do it with a large bags of coriander at hand
Piggie parcels crunchy cucumber got me through these! Can’t imagine doing it without a food bribe, or if they wouldn’t take one :yikes::))

Well I’m putting my piggies first and ignoring my own fears and I’ve called the vets to enquire about their plums. Registered them online and setting up an appointment once they call back, nerve wracking but I know it needs to be done. Just short of 200 per piggie though :yikes: x

That is expensive. Although, if they are neutering guinea pigs on a regular basis at least you know there are less likely to be any issues.

The vet I was recommended was by @Little Ones (sorry for the tag!) and the man that was recommended is still there :) my regular vet was honest and said they don’t have much experience with piggie plums so I’m much more confident with these even if it is expensive! So nerve wracking though

It is nerve wracking. I remember when I had Jazzy done. I’m sure it will all go smoothly though and if it’s a recommended vet then that’s already a good start. I only trusted my vet because he used to work at a vets near a piggy rescue and did all the rescues neuters.

Hopefully they do a good job! They removed a bladder stone for our BB and it cost £1400! Insanity! Simon only charged us about £800 for the same thing. Exotic vets are so expensive these days! Saying that though, Ellie Whitehead at Matlock who’s a Guinea pig specialist was meant to charge us £190 I believe for a neuter so I guess not much difference there between specialist vs exotic (we had to cancel at the last minute).
I hope the surgery goes well for him, neutering is something that worries me too because it’s an “optional” surgery and whilst so many Guinea pigs are routinely neutered, you do hear some horror stories now and again

£1400 :yikes: That’s an arm and a leg! Not bad pricing from Simon… I know us both being in barnsley it’s a matter of distance too. Luckily found someone to take me for their appointment whenever it is, I need to get learning to drive! Blooming theory is still backed up lol :( I asked for Mauro specifically and when I get the actual appointment I’m going to try and make sure it’s definitely him doing it. Had to register online so not in their system until later today/tomorrow.. will keep this updated x

Booked in for the 14 feb with the vet I requested :) happy to have this all moving forward for them but so nervous! It’s going to be my first big aftercare for my piggies… terrified I’m going to get something wrong but I’m sure it’ll be be okay x

You will be fine, the post-op care guides on the forum were really useful and i was well prepared after reading them. I had two very different experiences of post-neuter piggies both having had the operation with the same vet. Ginger Pig came home after his op and you wouldn't have know he had been neutered that day, he just carried on as usual. Milo was completely different, he was a bit wobbly and i had to syringe feed him for the first 24 hours (top-up feeding as he was eating but not enough). I think that like humans they can have differing reactions to the anaesthetic and pain relief drugs. Plan to have to step in with support feeding and you may be pleasantly surprised to find that it isn't needed.

Hope it all goes well and you know that we are all here to offer advice if you need it. :)

I'm very lucky to have a competent exotic vet,he has neutered 17 of my piggies over a 8 year period.the piggies stay overnight in the hospital.ive had no abscesses or post op complications.it really helps if you have a vet who is experienced in neutering.
i wish you all the best, you have had good advice above.

Aww thank you both so much! I’ve been reading the post-op guide a lot and showed my OH too. Going to read it through a few more times before the day, I think I’m nervous about handling them after the op as well to make sure their stitches and things are healing nicely. Will take it one day at a time x

Aww thank you! I hope you enjoy their floor time, it’s so cute watching them popcorning 😁
I've only had them a week tomorrow so they're still very shy. They are coming out of their hidey now to the sound of mine and my sons voices and we took the sides off the cage last night and just sat playing with them so hopefully it won't be too long. I've heard about this popcorning and can't wait to witness it.

Good luck, it’s always a bit of a worry but worth it for later in life and their greater happiness
I’m sure everything will go really well. I would make sure you have syringes and a bag of Emeraid and read up on aftercare. You probably won’t need it 😊 when Ted has his done by Simon at the Cat and Rabbit he was almost 5 years old and he sailed through the op, you would think he had had anything done really

Oh fancy having the op on Valentines day! How ironic 😁

Dropped them off just now, feeling very sick with worry but I know they’ll be ok

Sending lots of luck.
Yes definitely try to keep busy to keep your mind occupied. X
