Duke hasn't been himself for the past few days and his eyes have been really crusty so i took him to the vet this moring who gave him a really good check over listened to his chest, checked his teeth, and looked in his eyes she put a dye into his eyes so she could see to the back of them i think? she gave me some cream for his eyes, and some anti-biotics and gave him a steroid injection.

I went to pay and the vet came out and told me she had given him too much steroid injection for his weight, but it shouldn't harm him it might just make him eat more as it usually affects the gut, i got him home and he looked worse, the vet called me to see how he was and to apologise again, i said he was looking worse and that i was more worried about him now than i was before i took him to the vets.

I also noticed he was very impacted, so ive cleaned up his bum and as he hasnt been eating much i gave him some CC which he took like he was starving from the spoon, as if he isnt eating much or his poop then he wont be getting the vits he needs, he's gone really quiet and lying down looking really bad.. I think i might be losing him :(

do you think the extra steroid could be causing this? she said it was only slightly above what he should have had, or is it just nature taking its course? he is inbred and both his brother and sister have died already and he has the signs they were showing before they died. I'm really upset :(

Hi,

That's really bad that the vet gave too much steroid. I know people make mistakes but if this was done to a human and they died they would be facing manslaughter charges.

Is there another vet in your area that you could take him to? Continue to spoon feed the CC - it's a good sign that he is taking it from you!

thanks for the quick reply, no there isnt its the same group of vets in every other town, there is one other but another member of my family had a bad experience with them so I'm unsure about using them, plus i cant really afford to pay out more charges to see a different vet.

I just found a bag of mixed lettuce (no iceburg) in the firdge so put a handful of that in which he ate really fast! i didnt have enough money on me earlier so i havent actually got the anti-bitoics to start him on i was like £3 short and they wont let me have them until i take the rest of the money down, I'm a regular client there too you would think they would let me drop in the £3 later today and take the meds when i was there with duke so i could get him started on them, she said she would give me some free bio-lapis too, should i give him that or not?

poor duke

am really sorry for what you are going through! the vet should NOT have made a mistake in medicating him! like squeakypigs said if a human was over medicated there would be a big fuss made. and as for not letting you take the antibiotics for him just cause you were short makes me so danm mad! where is the compassion and welfare of the animals gone? i know they are a business but like in a hospital patients should come first!
i would do some research about the steroid and keep a diary and see if there is any avenue you can go.
really hoping duke gets better, sending you hugs and healing vibes for you and duke! what about an emergency vet? no thats no good as it is mid afternoon in the UK.
what about shelters or rspca? haven't they got medical/vet people there? wishing you luck and keep us posted please!

They made a mistake and wouldn't let you take the antibiotics because you were £3 short? That's awful!

Well it's defnately a good sign he is still eating - make sure that he is getting plenty of water too!

Yes, it would be a good idea to start on the biolapis now - it could help!

yeah thanks i'll have a look into it on the net, he's just lying down and seems to tilting to one side which doesnt look good.. ive got to go out later but my mum will be here to keep an eye on him, do you think he might pick up when he has some anti-biotics or not?

I cant get the bio-lapis until i go to the vets later on, they are shut now.

They have got a new receptionsit and a vet ive never seen before, i think if it had been the one who knows me they would have let me take the meds and nip in to pay later on for the stuff, ive never not paid in full before and ive spent hundreds with them especially when lois had her op i was there every week for more anti-biotics.

poor duke

i would give water to prevent dehydration and keep him warm and perhaps bring duke inside, keep trying to offer food and keep the syringe feeding up. and i would definately go to the vet and pick up meds when they open again.
i would also let your regular vet know what has happened the next time you see them! as to whether duke will pick up once on the meds depends on duke, one can't say, but he stands a better chance if on them! it's like with people if i and OH had a cold and both were on medication he might get better whilst i stay the same. good luck and sending hugs and healing vibes XXXXX. come on duke you can do it!

I'm so sorry the vet made such a mistake. Like Ellie said, he would find himself in serious trouble if this was a human and to be honest i'm sure vets could also find themselves in a huge amount of trouble too.

I am just thinking that maybe it could be worth giving him a vitamin C tablet a day, plus some probiotic (biolapis) could help settle the gut. It's good that he still wants to eat. Just keep giving him lots of food that he likes. I really hope he's going to be ok. xx

they have lots of diff vets so you see a diff one each time, but there are a few who know me better as the saw me often with lois.

Duke lives inside, he lives in my room so he's nice and warm.. i'll keep giving him water and food.

can they have normal vit c tablets from the chemist? the sugar free ones that dissolve or not?

vitamin C

i am not sure on how much to disolve and to give perhaps go for the baby dosage, perhaps get vitamin C tablets like berocca or similar and syringe that into duke. you might also want to bathe his eye in warm salty water to clear it up. good luck and really hope duke gets better! keep us posted! hugs XXXXXXX

ok thanks, i'll nip to chemist if we dont have any in when I'm out at the vets.

he just had some more lettuce, and he loves those fruity bites treats so i put a small handful of those in for him too which he is happily eating, just when he isnt eating he goes back to lying down and twitching like he's uncomfy, and looking really ill.

i'll let you know how he is later on, thanks for all your replies :)

I'm not sure how to help, but just wanted to let you know I'm thinking of you both. I hope he starts to improve soon. *gentle hugs to him* xx

Thanks, he doesn't seem much better, ive given him the antibiotics. how long does that bio-lapis stuff retain its freshness for? am i meant to give him that by syringe or in his water bottle because archie drinks from the same bottle i dont want him having something he doesnt need..

When Georgie stopped pooing after his op, I am convinced the bio lapis helped a lot, within 2 days he was pooing and himself again.
Mix the sachet in 50mls water and feed as often as possible by syringe throughout the day (I used a 5ml one) but not within 2 hours of any antibiotics as it interferes with it. Another thing to help get the gut moving again is fibreplex which your vet should have too, it is like a paste you syringe and it contains prebiotic and probiotic.

I hope he pulls through :0)

Edit:I kept the bio lapis mix in the fridge and took it out 15 mins before I gave it to him.

duke :(

reading this made me really sad, you would think that because the vet made a mistake he would give you the meds straight away.
i really hope duke picks up soon and i will be thinking of you , keep us posted .
huge hugssss to you and duke

I'm so sorry you have had a bad experience with Duke and how unfair not to give him meds because of £3.00. When my guinea was poorly I gave her half and vitamin c tablet daily and she ate it without having to mix it with water. I hope he is feeling better soon xx

I'm so sorry to hear about Dukes misfortune from a clumsy vet. It really isnt on and i think you should take it further. I hope he feels better soon.

thanks everyone, he's still the same although he has been drinking from the water bottle, I'm just going to give him his supper now so hopefully he will tuck into that.

Hello, he's still with us :) He looked a bit depressed sitting in his cage though all huddled up so i got him out and took him into the living room with me, gave him his antibiotics and put his eye cream on, we grow veg in our garden so my mum went to get him a fresh cabbage leaf thought it would be packed full of vits being freshly picked rather than the stuff i got at the supermarket so he ate about 1/4 of that and a bit of broccoli, and had lots of water from the syringe he liked it so much he pulled the syringe out of my hand! lol

He seemed to perk up a bit then i put him into a box with hay and he ate some hay too and seemed a bit happier, ive just put him back in his cage with archie so hopefully he will be alright :)

so glad

am so happy duke has perked up a bit and is eating and drinking! they are funny creatures with the syringe aren't they? snatching it from your hand, or pushing it away, or chewing on it. like FF said you are doing a wonderful job you and your mum and sending big hugs for all of you XXXXX

Glad he's seeming a lot happier now - hopefully he will continue to improve. Great news that he's eating and drinking though.

Aww, it sounds like he's feeling a bit better if he's drinking and eating his dinner. Hope this continues.

thanks everyone.. btw does anybody know if that bio-lapis makes the water taste different? duke seems to absoloutly love it with this in then i gave him a syringe full of normal water and he turned his nose up! lol he went off to have a fight with the hay ball for some hay so he is perking up a bit :)

he is drinking the normal water from his bottle just not as much as he usually does.

It tastes sweet so they love it! makes it a whole lot easier..

ah right, yeah he keeps pulling the syringe out of my hands when he has it! lol
