Hi, so this is a little long but I will cut it down as best as I can.

Basically I decided to adopt a single boar & placed a reserve on him. He is about 8 months old (approx) and apparently doesn't get on with other pigs. He will be my first guinea pig. My landlord said I could only get him if he lived in the garden and I agreed and placed my reserve but THEN did some more research (I know, terrible order of events). I have read that it is not a good idea to keep a single pig outdoors throughout winter. I have also read I can't keep him outside and take him inside a warm heated house for playtime/cuddle time due to fluctuation in temperatures. Is this true?

Anyway, I decided to keep him in my bedroom. Fast forward to tonight (am meant to be picking up guinea pig tomorrow) and landlord says I cannot keep him in my bedroom and he has to be outside. What is the best course of action? His hutch would be a double hutch and about 104 cm long, so not huge. I have a run for him but landlord doesn't want it up constantly or very much at all, and surely he couldn't' use it in winter anyway.

Very worried now about how guinea pig will fare. Landlord is very annoyed and my contract is kind of at risk if I keep him in my bedroom but I was really wanting to get him a big c&c cage. Any options? Would he be ok outside on his own? Could I bring him in for cuddles in the evening? I have been looking forward to getting him for so long and have also placed a reserve on him so don't know if not getting him is actually an option.

Thank you so much for any help.

Hi there. With a rescue you can back out of adopting. After all circumstances change so do not worry. If a guinea pig lives outside it has to be in a heated shed. Hutches are not warm enough nor winter proof. I'm sorry you cannot have him indoors. Personally, I would not take him on as he needs a heated shed. If he comes in and out from indoors he could get sick due to temperature change. Sorry to have to tell you that.

Sigh, this is very sad news but it's what I'm thinking.

Maybe one day you will move and can have guinea pigs. Your landlord does sound very mean!

I am very sorry for the pickle you are in!

It would be good if you contacted the rescue he has come from (did they actually home check you?) if they would take him back; any good rescue will do so.

Having a single piggy in the garden all year round is really not fair, but understandably you do not want to risk having your cotnract cancelled. Perhaps you can try later in life again when conditions are right! Are there any pets that your landlord will tolerate indoors (obviously with you doing your research beforehand)?

My landlord's okay. I should have told him about my plans to keep piggy inside earlier. I figured it would be okay since it's my own bedroom but apparently not. Very upset to be honest as I have cuddled this pig and fell in love with him.

Aww I'm really sorry. That is hard.

The rescue didn't home check and I'm not sure what their policy is once you have reserved the gpig. Landlord has relented a little and said I may keep him in my bedroom but says he is very angry and feels betrayed I didn't tell him sooner (I am a lodger). I feel as though it may still not be the best thing to do since landlord is so angry at me but not sure really.

Well you don't have to adopt just for a reservation. I would think carefully as the landlord sounds most displeased and you have to get on well.

By the way that is not a real rescue. They have no clue about bonding so usually claim all boars must live alone. I would wait until you are in a better situation and adopt from one of our recommended rescues.

Some people get their leash changed to say they will pay for a professioinal cleaner to come in after they move to ensure everything is nice and clean. Also maybe you can offer to buy a carpet shampoo'er and regularly use it? And offer to bug a plug in air freshner for the hallway or whatever communal space you have outside your door. good luck!

Could you write a letter to your landlord apologising for putting a reserve on a rescue guinea pig before you had done your research into their needs properly and thanking him for his kindness after you have put him into a pretty untenable position. Promise to not let your guinea pig loose in the room and say that you have learned your lesson about getting a pet before you know whether it is suitable for where you are living! Tell him how grateful you are, but say that you will cancel the reservation if it is really upsetting him. ;)

PS: That doesn't sound exactly like good standard rescue to me... :(

Thanks for the suggestions MissBubblegum; they're appreciated. :) Unfortunately I think I will have to withdraw my reserve on him tomorrow (if even possible). Very very upset about it as I would think it was up to me what I had in my own bedroom & LL recently suggested I get a cat - I think Gpigs are far less obtrusive than a cat!

A cat! The cat would need access to the whole house!

I'm not sure Wiebke, LL is very annoyed. I have literally never seen him so pissed off. A little bit of an overreaction if you ask me but oh well.

Haha exactly! But he likes cats. And isn't such a fan of small fluffy rodents, so I think that is swaying his decision (and anger) a lot.

Ah I see. He just does not like guinea pigs really. Poor you.

Pets@home are not a rescue. They sell unwanted guinea pigs without asking any questions whatsoever, sadly. :(

Yeah, he only really wants animals that would be compatible with a cat, as he would like to get a cat in time. I guess he is so annoyed because a gpig in my room would mean no cat for him. I really don't know whether to go ahead with the adoption (everything is in place apart from the guinea pig himself, I have spent ages preparing) or just withdraw my reserve and try and pacify landlord.

I guess you need to weigh up your options. I would not adopt from that place though. They are not a real rescue. You would have to find the guinea pig a friend and the landlord may object to having two guinea pigs.

Oh yes, there is no way landlord would let me have 2 guinea pigs. That would probably have me kicked out lol.

If I were you, I would cancel and wait until a better time - and then get two piggies, please!

We have got a good rescues list on the top bar where you are guaranteed to rehome only healthy (i.e. quarantined and treated), guaranteed and well bonded piggies.

I think so. :( How I wish I had the money to move out.... :(

Ok, I'll take your advice. Thank you. Can't say I'm not very disappointed but it's probably the right thing to do. I bought him a couple of hundred pounds worth of piggy stuff too.... returning that is going to be so sad :((((

I really feel for you at this horrible time, I hope you can get guinea pigs another time in your life though. x
