I finished the cage my 3 year old daughter and I built. So tonight when my OH got home we tried to re introduce Max (neutered) and Ruby to Reily on a blanket in the living room floor, each armed with a towel and shoe. Max sniffed Reily, Reily sniffed Max, heads raised Reily backed down, and Max went and laid down and munched on some hay and watched the 2 girls. Ruby and Reily butted head several times, lunged, circled, and about after 25 minutes settled down and laid down, munched on the hay, out come Reily was backing down to Ruby. The teeth chattering and strutting turned into normal chatter. So after about 25 minutes of them laying down and being calm we put them in the new cage together, I washed all their stuff, put three new box beds in. Max loves cardboard boxes, so I put some fluffly soft bedding in them. Everything was fine for about ten minutes until Ruby out of nowhere lunged into the box Reily was laying down in and you tell they were "dancing" I heard a loud squeal, tap the side of the box and they both jumped out. There were tuffs of hair everywhere and few drops of blood. I checked over them both and couldn't find bite wounds. they have been living together in complete harmony for a while now next door to each other with a divider grid up. This is completely different from introducing Max and Ruby, they sniffed each other, Max mounted her, she ran and they both started popcorning about. Guess I got lucky then. The divider is back up, I don't think I have the heart to try this again.

Now I have to decide what to do, I am not wanting Reily to live alone for her life and I don't room for another, as it is, Max and Ruby are in a 2x3 grid and she is in a 2x2 grid. :0

oh noooooooo i'm so sorry love :(
I've never been thru this before so i can't help personally.....
but did you read thru the reintro / intro thread? maybe there's something else in there you could try? But seen as there's been blood shed you'd have to wait and then decide if it's worth another try or not.
Your cage helper is cute and obviously enjoying helping x)

Oh how sad! And they say boars are tough to bond. I've had less trouble with my 2 boys than you with your girl Reilly.

None of there advice is wrong, but I havnt been able to find a section on cage sizes yet. :) Still looking though! :)

I still have a smaller commercial cage and jumbo commercial cage that is big enough for two, barely, but I was looking at the stacked cages like someone suggested and that can be done by adding on to the base we built. Reily has nestled a place in my heart, but mostly my OHs, she doesn't care for me much but loves him. Think I am going to also call the animal shelter and see if they will allow Reily to come date.

I contacted my local animal shelter, they said they piggies come through all the time :0, don't have any fixed boars or sows right now but to keep checking back. they would be more than happy to date Reily out and strongly encourage it, she can even spend a day or two there and they will help fully at finding her a companion. Suggestions on how to go about how to go about adding another level to what I already have would be greatly appreciated.

the base itself will hold a 2x5 grid set up

Perhaps you best post in our housing section for details and look through our cage sticky thread at the top. There are several solutions.

Great that you are going to date Reily and taking such great care of her happiness. Trios in any combination are the bonding most likely to fail; not just boars! :{

When i got Max I was clueless, but the vet insisted on another boar, but knowing what I know about hamsters, that didn't sound like a good idea, so the vet and I compromised on fixing Max, which he did very cheaply just so I would get another.
