Rapunzel has swollen nipples!

I’ve no experience of having a piggie spayed but I would opt to get it done sooner rather than later. I don’t think it’s helpful waiting, I personally would want it doing now, then it’s over with x

Tough decision.
Go with your instincts.
I find that sometimes with a difficult choice I make a decision and live with it for a day or two. If I still feel comfortable then it’s the decision I can live with.
If I feel less comfortable after the couple of days then I make a different decision.

Great advice there @Merab's Slave

There seems to be quite a few successful 'mature' Guinea spays these days, as she's only 4yrs I'd seriously consider a spay if Rapunzel is generally healthy & you're confident in vet?

My Ellie was 6yrs old, she kept getting UTI's & terribly bad bleeding from her genitals. She was a little moody but nothing drastic. No hair loss, no crusty nipples.

Ellie had a conscious ultrasound & a 25mm+ ovarian cyst was found, she was in the vets opinion too old for a spay & she wasn't confident on doing it due to the heightened risks.

I suggested the HCG Chorulon injections, the vet did some research & Ellie had 2 injections 7-10 days apart. Then another 2 injections 1yr later.
The injections worked for Ellie, she had 1 bad bleed after the first injection then never bled again.
I could feel her cystic ovary for a few wks afterwards but it disappeared for about 1yr. (hence the second batch of injections).
Ellie was far more mellow afterwards.

If Rapunzel was to have injections now & need them again in 12months time as Ellie did, she might not be as resilient if she required a full spay at a later date?
Also Ellie was lucky as the injections worked for her, but sometimes they don't improve & you're in the same position as now, but possibly with more advanced cysts.

I'd discuss with my vet Rapunzels spaying options & recovery prospects if I was in your dilemma.
I think there is the option of a partial spay & going in from the sides with keyhole type surgery too now?
I can't remember who's Guinea was spayed that way? Maybe @VickiA?

Good luck with your decision & maybe try as Merab's Slave suggested, make a decision & think on it for a day or two before the final decision is made?

Whatever you decide I'm sure it'll be best for Rapunzel

Xx

My sow Dot has been fully spayed, but she was 2 years old, she was fine after, no recovery feeding, just left her be and she was fine, I just kept checking she was healing up fine, which she did no problems.

Does a full spay mean uterus removed as well? That's what she had anyway, she had a growth on her uterus or in and our vet removed the ovaries as well whilst he was operating, which I'm glad he did

I just got the call, Rapunzel made it through surgery and is laying on the vets lap and starting to wake up! He said her right ovary was 3x the size of her left and full of cysts. He also said the bottom of her uterus was thickened. This all makes me feel like I made the right decision.

Must be such a relief to know she made it through the surgery, and that those cysts are gone! Wishing the beautiful Rapunzel a speedy recovery and sending hugs to you and your family and the other piggies x

Yeah I was a nervous wreck for a couple hours, waiting is the worst!

Aw so glad she’s through the surgery, fingers all crossed for a speedy recovery Rapunzel x

I think you made the right decision whether she did or didn't make it. Bet you feel relieved 👍. Happy for you all 🙂

She’s home! You can tell in her eyes she is in pain 😢 I’m letting her settle in her recovery cage for a bit, but there better be some bites out of that food soon. I have all her favorites watermelon, apples, and cucumber! (Usually not fed all in one day but she just needs to eat something). Kristoff is not happy that he has to be separated from his wife, he came right over to the divider to see her.2A46936D-51B3-49CD-8917-3562A817148A.webpAC1C3042-27C9-4998-B282-7704029B6F27.webpD20DD4FB-C84C-4664-B4F2-91B8C413B966.webp

You made the right call for sure. Sending her lots of love and recovery vibes and huge hugs to you x x

will keep popping by to check on her progress. X

She has only been out of surgery for 3 hours, when should I worry about her not eating and try syringe feeding?

Thats a neat scar. Have you tried syringe feeding her? She will feel a bit spaced out because of the drugs they gave her. Betsy would only take a bit of syringe food first of all then the next day it was speed syringe feed time!

I syringe fed her a little then tried some more veggies and she started munching away! She also got some kisses from her husband through the bars
