Heyo, wanted to know if anyone else has seen this before as our vet has no idea what is it or what to do. She has pus forming in channels with no sac to remove.

Quick health history:
Our pig Apple is a special need piggie, when we adopted her we thought she had an ear infection so got her treated for it but she was left with a slight head tilt afterwards. After a few months she suddenly got “wobbly” and struggled to run around. A quick trip to the vet and they were convinced she had gone blind so we started caring for her under that assumption. We now know through our own care she isn’t blind at all, she just has neurological issues and struggles with balance. She runs in little circles sometimes when out on floor time and wobbles as she walks but other than that was a happy and healthy piggy.

Medical issue:
Now, one day She got an abscess on the top of her head between the ears. She had surgery to remove it but the vet found there is no sac, just pus that seems to be forming in channels somewhere between her neck and ears. They did their best but with no sack to remove it didn’t go away, and the stitches shortly ruptured with pus after surgery. We had the stitches removed to form a blowhole on her head that we have been cleaning out with saline for over a week now while the hole slowly closes up. But of course it was going to easy so now a second abscess is forming close by above her eye.

She has been on Betryl and metacam for a long time now but the pus keeps coming and a second abscess means it’s not being very effective. She is a wobbly pig so she may have a weakened immune system says the vet. The only option is £1000+ scans to even look at the problem never mind surgery and I can’t afford that.

Have you seen this?
Just want to know if anyone else has dealt with this type of issue before and if there is hope of it going eventually or if this is just her life now. Blowholes and saline. We lost our other pig last year to a reoccurring dental abscess so the prospect of another eternal abscess feels like a gradual death sentence.

Thanks for any help or words of wisdom on this, apple has always defied logic but now she is an angry pus dolphin.

Pic of her being cute;

Hello and welcome to the forum. I’m so sorry Apple has an abscess. I’m not a health expert but I have had experience of a tooth root abscess in my piggy Pepper 🌈. A very good antibiotic for abscesses is Zithromax. He had a six week course of it and his abscess didn’t return. It did make him lose his appetite while he was on it and he needed to be syringe fed which was very hard work.

Has Apple been diagnosed with CBS? I’ll try and find the guide about it.

Hopefully someone will be along soon with further advice. Good luck. I hope she is soon on the mend 🤞🏻
