I've been looking around at various probiotics and seeing some that I've never noticed before. (Sheltered life, me?!)

There's the usual Bio-Lapis, Avipro Plus, Pro-C and simple acidophilus capsules, but Protexin (who manufacture Bio-Lapis) do a much wider range. I was wondering if anyone had tried any of them.

Pro-Kolin looks like a good one to treat diarrhoea as it contains kaolin and pectin. This product is one recommended by Guinea Lynx so is a viable anti-diarrhoea treatment to add to the first aid kit.

Fibreplex is another one sometimes mentioned, anyone here used it?

I tend to stick with a gel sent from a friend in the US called Bene-bac, fantastic stuff and only a tiny dab needed, but I'm interested in other probiotics too.

I have been using Avipro in cunjunction with UTI and bladder stones, as it does not contain any calcium - good to know if your piggy is on a low calcium diet.
 
I was given Pro Kolin for Captain Jack when he had the runs really badly and it seemed to firm him up! What worried me is that it's generally given to dogs and cats and as such is 'meat' flavoured! Which seemed a bit wrong. I bought a new tube at Crufts for a couple of pounds, to keep in the cupboard.

I've seen Fibreplex mentioned on the rabbit forum but haven't had to use it - I couldn't find out whether it was ok for guineas or not.

Fibreplex says 1ml/kg, I'm sure I've seen people on here mention it too. I do have some here, but not needed to use it yet so can't say if it's very effective.

Good to hear the Pro-Kolin did the trick for Captain Jack but I agree about the meat-flavouring, doesn't sound great but the ingredients are spot on for dealing with diarrhoea.

Good point on the calcium, Wiebke, not something I've thought of before.
 
Yes my vet has given me Fibreplex before.

It came as a carrot-flavoured paste and Colin found it very tasty, even though he's usually quite a fussy eater.

I've also used a powder made by Protexin but can't remember the name. I had to measure out 'one fifth of the sachet' per day which was a real pain.

Laura from my other posts you probably know I use protexin professional sachets ( it's the 5g ones and you give 1g per day to the pig )

I honestly think this is extending Athenas life. As I've said before she has an inoperable tumor and before she was using this she would bleed every time she went to the toilet. She still does bleed sometimes but not from pooing or weeing but is not in any pain or discomfort from it. The vet was amazed at how well she was when he checked her over a few weeks ago considering he said the mass was very large.

We gave some of this to Pepper on Sunday by syringe to see if it helped with her diarrhea and it seems to have cleared it up. I have read today that it is useful in treating stomach upsets such as diarrhoea so I think this has helped her as well.

Athena gets it daily, and it can be a pain to weigh out, but we've decided even when we don't have Athena as long as we keep piggies we'll have some in as I think it's a very useful thing to have
 
Fiberplex is a combination pro biotic and prebiotic and contains the yeast Saccharomyces instead of the bacteria you fiund in other probiotics. The instructions say you should only feed it for a couple of day unless otherwise instructed by a vet.

My vets often suggest fibreplex for couple of days after an op or a dental - helps keep the gut moving until the piggie is eating properly again....and they do like the taste!

However if they're not eating at all I use Recovery or CC with a protexin sachet.

Burgess Excel are bringing out a 'Fibrevore recovery paste' it says it's beneficial fibre for convalescing pets and is in syringe form like fibreplex.
Not actually seen it myself yet (it says available from April)so not had a chance to see exactly what's in it.
 
I like the Entrodex probiotic best. I'm not mad on Fibreplex unless it's necessary, as it's very expensive, the piggies hate it (the texture is really grainy and oily, so that's probably why), and it is so hard to get out of the tube - I've had them block up before, making it even more expensive!
 
Are there any probiotics around that have no electrolytes in them? Would be interested to hear of any. :)
 
Got more info on 'fibrevore recovery paste' by excel. it says it contains digestible and indigestible fibre,prebiotics,antioxidents,carbohydrates,vitamins and minerals with sufficient vit C for guineas and has a aniseed flavour for palatability. can be given to guineas,rabbits,chinchillas and degus.

uses: during/post illness,post op/post neuter,during periods of stress etc.

dose is 5ml, 3 times daily for one or two days or as directed by vet/vn.

Still waiting for it to come in stock so not had chance to try yet and not sure how expensive it will be :)
