complications

Forgot to say that all the guineas live indoors and all were kept in 100cm cages & bedded on towels for 2weeks post op.

Should i update on Rodney on this thread or would you prefer me to start a new one? I will try to find out what sutures were used and any other info i can when i go back on Thursday.

Harry- 18months -2years(rescue piggie).

Before I start these are approx timing as it was a wee while ago now.

Neutered and cleared by vet 3-4 weeks later.

Rescued by me at approx 6 weeks post op and found two infected neutering wounds/ small lumpy swelling. He went back to the vet that did the op for the rescue and prescribed baytirl for 10days, for a second time( not sure why, clearly they didnt stop the iinfection in the first place) Wounds healed, again given all clear.

Approx 1month later lump appeared, decided enough was enough and took him to my own cavvy savvy vet. He was booked in for an another operation to remove the lump diagnosed as an absess for the Monday after a late week appointment.

Monday my vet called to say the stitch was the root of the problem and the absess was attached to the bladder lining and couldnt be removed like a pocketed tumour so to speak. He did some fancy knife work and piggie came home with very open wound exposing the remaining absess lining that couldnt be removed. 2/3rds was sucessfully removed.

14 days later with intensive hospital care, syringe feeding, gut stimulant and antibiotics he was given the all clear.

5months later no reoccurance and one happy little piggy with wifeys.

I believe that the reason for the absess was lack of the proper care post op. Bedded on wood shavings, not cleaned out often enoug or checked regularly for infection. As with me he healed wonderfully with an open wound and very very quiickly.

I dread to think what would have happended to Harry if I hadnt rescued him and discovered his re-opened infecetd wounds.

There are photo's of his original wounds and his op wounds and his general recovery in the below threads:

Have had lots of boys neutered and have never had an abcess when glue has been used. Piggies that were stitched tended to develop abcesses up to 2 months after.

That is just my experience so now I always ask for glue.

Having said that I have a boy in for neutering tomorrow and am getting paranoid after reading this post!

My guinea pig Boris was neutered 9 days ago and quite quickly developed an abscess on his left hand side pretty much where the testicle would have been. He was fine upon coming home and then the swelling set in, although that was really the only symptom. He has been to the vet twice since to have the abscess looked at and drained, apparently the pus is very fluid and not thick like it usually might be. He is currently on Baytril 0.3ml twice daily and 0.3ml Metacam once daily. I believe he has internal stitches (unsure as to the material) and glue was used on the external wounds which all looks fine.

Since the operation he's been bedded on puppy pads which I change daily and he has always lived indoors.

He's 6 months of age, although pretty big and well developed. The vet I used is an exotic vets and did come recommended, they have been great, it's just a bit of an unfortunate issue! Will update as we progress!
