My 3 year old male guinea pig had blood on his bedding this morning.
He has been soaked in urine twice and urine very smelly.
Eating and drinking well and active.
I have an appointment at vets in the morning and they have said they may express a urine sample from him if I am unable to get a sample.
What does this involve and should I avoid and just assume an infection and request antibiotics/ metacam.
Advice please as quite worried atm

To get a sample yourself, just cuddle your piggle on your lap (with a tube/tub/other pee collector) under his bum at all times. Before collecting and during the hugs, syringe feed him as much water as he'll take. It took Cloud about 15mins to pee into the tube. Just be patient and pee will come.

I'm not sure what it involes if the vet does it themself but it's probably a similar method.

Of you are worried, go ahead with the requesting medicines. It's really your choice. Hope he gets better! :)

Thanks for the reply.
Will give it a try in the morning
Not sure the vet will cuddle my gp and wait for a wee.
Sure it will involve something unpleasant, hence my concern

Oh. Good luck and i hope it isn't too bad! :)

Hi!

PLEASE be careful; do NOT force any water down a piggy, it can have very harmful consequences.
For this reason, we have stopped recommending to water your piggy. Offering a piece of cucumber will do the same trick but with the risk of dangerous overhydration or water going into the lungs.
Ultimately, this measure is not going to make a huge difference in the outcome, though. It is one of the online things still making the rounds that have not stood the practical test when we tried it some years ago.

Please see a vet. Be aware that it can take several days for symptoms to firm up. the red coloured pee may or may not contain blood (the red is usually a natural dye called porphyrine) while seemingly clear pees can test hogh for the presence of blood.

All the best.

I have no intention of forcing my guinea pig to do anything.
Was just going to put him in a travel box with his breakfast, wait for him to wee then clean him up and collect the sample.
As I said in my post I have an appointment tomorrow morning with a vet that is very experienced with guinea pigs.

This is not a shot at you but a response to advice given by a new forum member.

I didn't think it was, please don't worry.
The post earlier did not say anything about forcing water and like the cuddle and wait for a wee suggestion

Really wanting to find out what the vets do when they express urine but no responses as yet.
Would like more info on above before appt tomorrow

I really can’t agree with your methodology.
I’ve been collecting urine samples for years with much less fuss. I pop them in a box with an upturned puppy pad (ie plastic backing side up). Feed them a chunk of cucumber and wait for nature to take its course, then I lift them out and use a syringe to suck up the wee from the plastic.

What do you mean you don't agree with my methodology, it is virtually the same technique as yours!
The travel box has a plastic base to collect the urine and I only have a little time in the morning before the appointment.
Gp always wees after or during his breakfast so I don't think it is that it is a lot of fuss.
I need a sample that is only 1 hour old for accurate results

Please refer to the post I quoted. It wasn’t yours. I was responding directly to the other poster.

That is absolutely fine as long as the plastic has been wiped/disinfected with disinfectant before you pop him in. Be prepared that for pets who can wee almost all the time, when you want them to give you a urine sample they suddenly seem to discover bladder control.

Thankyou, thank you everyone for your support.
I have a huge urine sample this morning.
My little guinea pig just sat down and produced it after I politely asked him.
Love this little one so much and decided to get him checked even though he is in good form this morning.

Blood in urine under microscope, bladder full.
Anti biotics for 10 days, anti inflammatory for 4 days.
The vet was very experienced with Guinea pigs
See how he is by Monday

Glad you got him seen and he is now on the road to recovery. 😍

It’s good that you got the sample and it’s been seen under microscope. Often it looks “clear” to us but has blood in the sample when analysed, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.
BTW that’s incredible that you got 2 urine samples! Your piggies must be well trained indeed to pee on command :lol!:

This morning I couldn't believe that they both did samples.
Just gave then breakfast, cleaned out and washed the house and samples in seconds!
I am feeling that all went well and I made the right choice today but concerned as Ted has still not been to the toilet so may massage his belly later just to get it moving
