My guinea pig Pepper finished a weeks course of baytril for a respiratory infection on Thursday. She was having 0.2ml twice a day. I thought this seemed like quite a short course but the vet said her lungs didn’t sound too bad. The antibiotics helped a bit as she no longer hoots or has crackly breathing- but usually after eating hay she’ll sneeze several times and her breathing will be a tiny bit whistly- it’s only noticeable if i listen very carefully. She hasn’t lost any weight and is very active. Her breathing isn’t laboured as far as i can tell. The first thing i thought of was the hay that i gave them, its the bottom of the bag so quite dusty. She’s always been quite a snuffly piggy but because of the uri i’m paranoid it hasn’t gone away. Could she still have a uri or could it just be because of the dusty hay?

They have narrow airways so even the smallest amount of irritation will cause a sneeze. If they eat too fast, that will also cause them to sneeze.
However if you are concerned then you should see your vet for another check. It could be that it is a uri and that the course wasn’t long enough, or it might be dust irritation, but you should always err on the side of caution where breathing is concerned
