Came in to my home today after being away a few days, and went to say hello to my piggies, and Lennox had big sores on her back, my grandad who looks after them when I'm away (he's excellent with them) came through and said he'd noticed the day previous but was waitin for me.

I have a vet appt at half 4. I'm so worried about her. Does anyone know what is wrong with her and what they may be. They are just like scabs although some open. She is so well cared for I don't understand how she would have got them!
 
It could be a bite wound, mites or fungal infection, good idea taking her to the vets. You could post pictures and see if we can shed any light on it, but vet visit best plan. x
 
There are several on her back and one is really big :( I don't think they are bites as Lennox is very dominant and her hutch mate is sooooo timid.

I will post a pigture.

I just feel so bad. I don't want people to think I'm a bad mum cause she is poorly :( they get the best care and everything they need... They aren't mistreated at all.. :( :(
 
Oh honey, i felt exactly the same way last week when i noticed one of my babies had a small patch on his tummy from a mites infestation, luckily it was caught and treated in time, it is now healing nicely and non of the other 3 were affected atall, but when i first noticed it i felt awful, but like yours my piggies get all of the love, care and attention as possible from me, so its not neglect or anything.

Awww. poor girl. Don't beat yourself up on this, you are a great piggie mom. Hope the vets goes well later and little Lennox will be on the road to recovery x

That looks like a mites or fungal infection, its not just the sores, (unless its my eyes or the light in the picture) she has several baldy patches too, poor girly it looks painful, for now i would bath with salt water to keep it clean, and maybe make her a "body Warmer" out of an old sock so she cant attack them, just cut the end of a sock and make 4 small inscisions for her legs.

All of her cage mates will need to be treated too.

These things happen, to me it looks like they have been seriously irritating her and she has been biting and scratching so much this has happened, or the infection is THAT bad its resulted in this.

As i said i would bath in salt water and put a sock on her for now.

I've bathed the sores. :) I felt so guilty she was hysterical, screaming the spot down! Unfortunately she has a massive bum so I can fit her into any of the socks. She has one cage mate, but she has had playtime with 3 other piggies will they need treatment too? What about animals that don't come into contact but are in the cage below? My buns in a hutch below their cage xx
 
Has your grandad not got any socks? :)) I had to cut up one of the OH's it had a hole in it anyway but he wsn't impressed as it was "his favourite pair" oh well.

I would treat all of the animals, especially if it is mites and they are fed the same hay, but i think fungal also spreads too? Sorry not 100% sure.

Do you ever give them any ivermectin as a precaution? xx
 
Awwww, poor girl. It must be sore... I'm sure the vet will get it sorted for her.

I had used a large mans sock lol the biggest I could find lol and it won't fit over her bottom. Lol she is a lil beyonce pig! You poor oh lol! Losing his fave socks to pigs :P

I will have them all treated and I didn't know there where any preventatives! I will defo be getting some now!
 
Took her into the vets and he said he definitely thinks its mites.

She was so well behaved and sat nicely on the table. But then he had to give her an anti flamitory injection and she nearly give the vet a nasty bite! And then she screamed the spot in. He put something on her back for the mites and I have to syringe her some medicine.

She was 1.2kg.... Is that good? He seemed concerned as she had a pot belly and it was squishy but ages allways been like that.

She's been very sleepy and exhausted keeping an eye on her. Hendrix her hutch mate is very upset but I am keeping an eye on her, and I am going to get lots of mite treatment tomorrow to make them all sure of being clear
 
Oh brave little baby. You will have to treat them all now. Have you checked to see if they have any bites or hair missing? She sounds like a fine weight to me. Some piggies have a bigger build.

The others haven't got anything wrong with them other than her hutch mate has a little bit of what looks like dandruff but nothing else. I'm going to treat hem all anyway :)
 
Yes...I'm not an expert on mites though hun I'm sure one of the other more experienced members will help you with it....but Ive seen bite wounds and they look a lot like that...

My two boys fell out and they had wounds just like that...and one of them is a very quiet pig :(
 
Hope Lennox starts to mend now. She must have been v itchy. Have you seen her scratching? The last pic looks like mite related hair loss to me - not sure about the sores but they do get very itchy and chew themselves if they have mites.
Did the vet use Xeno or a similar ivermectin spot on then? Are you getting in xeno for the other pigs? When Tea Cake had mites the Xeno sorted it out in just a few days (but he had less hair loss). Hope it gets better soon.

Well I had thought that but Lennox is the bully and Hendrix her housemate is very very timid and scared so I don't think she would do it. I think Lennox has done it herself all the wounds seem to be in places that are accessable from a back leg or from biting herself... When Bowie was in with l and h she had smaller versions of these on her, these where wounds :( after all this medication I hope they clear up but if not then I know it's h doing it x

I think it was ivermectin..

None of the other pigs have any symptoms so I was just going to get some mite spray stuff... What you think would be best? x
 
I would really recommend using ivermectin based spot on like Xeno for the other pigs too. The vet should get it in for you and it is cheaper buying a bigger batch. They also really need a second dose in about 10 days time to catch any mites later in the life cycle. I had a long chat with my vet when Tea cake had mites and so looked into the treatments then. Preventing it spreading is better than having to cope with really itchy, sore pigs. The sprays do diddly squat I believe.

But I am not an experienced as some others so maybe PM Abi Nurse to check my thinking? best of luck for sorting it out
