Poor Kiki has just had three pieces of hay removed from her eye

Thanks Vicky, the eye looks better than yesterday, it’s open. She in herself seems fine, but she’s a wriggler and fights any attempt at meds little monkey

That's good. See whether you can get away with no nightshifts and just stick to eye treatment before you go to bed and first thing in the morning unless you wake up naturally in the middle of the night.

If you need a bit more cooperation, try to divert her attention by allowing her to stuff herself with some veg or pellets and assert your authority by holding her ears between your fingers shortly, firmly but not crushingly, just as reminder as to who is boss with plenty of praise afterwards. Once she realises that it actually makes her feel a lot better and that her eyes are getting better, it may get a little easier for a few days.

I can’t believe how good she was at the vets. Just huddled up against me and didn’t flinch or move an inch. Soon as we get home she’s back to her I’m the boss position 😆 It seems a bit easier with two of use but still a major struggle but will assert my authority with those tips.

They never learn do they ….. yes you’ve guessed it’s Kiki 🙄

After three eye pokes in a month due to a change of hay (and ownership) in our originally independent pet shop, I had to look for soft hay for my hay trays again. Thankfully, I have found some that works out at the same price.

Here is an article I have written for Guinea Pig Magazine that you may find helpful: Who is the Boss - Your Guinea Pig or You?

Yes hay has not been great just lately spent a lot of money on all sorts of brands types and they are pretty coarse. I’ve had one bag of Morrisons hay (never normally buy it) but it was beautiful green and quite soft and smelt lovely. Sadly next bag not as good. They seem quite happy with stalky but at £100 plus for every haypoke it’s costly hay 😆

I noticed this afternoon Kiki seemed very quiet and upon checking her noticed that one of her eyes seemed almost shut. She’s been to local vets and the vet managed to get 3 pieces of hay out of her eye, one piece was about 1cm long and almost hair like :yikes:
We’ve come away with 0.5% Chloramphenicol antibiotics, one drop 3-6 times a day, do I need to give through the night if I give 6 times a day?
Seems a bit strange by the 3-6 times a day? Not very specific? But happy to do nights and give the top dose, she has quite a nasty ulcer

Also given a very low dose of Cat metacam which hasn’t really inspired my confidence tbh 🤨

I have some tear lube too
Poor Kiki, hope she picks up soon

Eyes are my least favourite issue now after my dogs issues and having to travel miles to specialist vet 3 times a week for a good while! Glad it’s looking better though. I’m sure once it’s all over she will have a short memory!

Glad Kiki’s eye is beginning to look better.
Some piggies can be very difficult with eye drops and meds.
When Micah had a haypoke he used to scrunch his eye tight shut so I couldn’t get the drops in.
He would do this just as I had managed to get his lower lid down and the dropper approached !

Yes, she has every trick in the book 🙄

Teeth are mine 😆with what use to be a regular 600 mile round trip to Northampton

i wish all vets were given all the research with regards pain relief, especially dog metacam. Its a misjustice that guinea pigs are going around with pain.i hope KiKi gets better soon.
Absolutely! he never told me that “Cat Metacam is just as strong“ which didn’t go down very well with me. She got well and truly told! 🙄

Well done @Bill & Ted your prompt and dedicated attention will be paying dividends in terms of helping with the healing process. And if you’ve found a way of getting the drops in that is less stressful for you both that is excellent.
Yes, she’s so much calmer in the weighing bow, she’s not lost a gram of weight either 😊

Kiki has been given a clean bill io health :yahoo:The vet popped eye stain in and nothing at all showed up, last time her eye was a horrible bright green colour under the lamp so really pleased, it’s healed so well and really quickly 😊

I won’t miss getting up at 4.00 am 😆
