I noticed this afternoon Kiki seemed very quiet and upon checking her noticed that one of her eyes seemed almost shut. She’s been to local vets and the vet managed to get 3 pieces of hay out of her eye, one piece was about 1cm long and almost hair like :yikes:
We’ve come away with 0.5% Chloramphenicol antibiotics, one drop 3-6 times a day, do I need to give through the night if I give 6 times a day?
Seems a bit strange by the 3-6 times a day? Not very specific? But happy to do nights and give the top dose, she has quite a nasty ulcer

Also given a very low dose of Cat metacam which hasn’t really inspired my confidence tbh 🤨

I have some tear lube too

Poor little Kiki, hope the drops sort her out bless her ❤️ x
I’ve only ever given drops during the day really as far as I can remember, so not sure about giving during the night sorry.

In the past when RB Piggy Shy Little Meg had bad hay poke she was on 9 drops, 3 times a day. 1 drop of Chloramphenicol, 1 drop of Remend and 1 drop of eye lubricant. This went on for 6 weeks! I was not Mrs Popular! Meg hated being picked up and hated eyedrops but I saved the eye.

I usually use a 1% chloramphenicol ointment 2-3xs a day, which seems to align with yours being half the strength given twice as often. I only do it during the day.

I often find meds that need doing during the night have instructions stating how many hours gap is needed so 'every 6-8 hours' rather than however many times a day if that makes sense.

Thanks everyone, Kiki is looking a little sad, but managed to eat all her veggies tonight.

I think I’ll do 6 doses including overnight for a couple of days just to give her a good start and see how she goes then give midnight and 6am if it’s improving

Hi

OUCH! :yikes:

Start with 6 times a day, giving it from first thing in the morning every 3 hours if possible throughout the day. Do this for the first 3 days then start reducing the frequency as the eye is healing.

Also please get some carbomer based eye gel to help with the healing process and speed it up (viscotears is one possible UK brand name; the tear gel is more effective in the deeper areas that the antibiotic cannot reach as well. Give the gel half an hour after the chloramphenicol to allow the antibiotic to be fully absorbed first. The gel will then also help to hydrate and soothe the eye. Has your vet given you any painkiller?

The best way for getting drops in is to pull the lower lid gently down a little and the aim the drops into the gap. It is easier while Kiki hasn't got any sight but you will know when it returns!

All the best. Chuck the kitchen sink at it in the first few days but then scale back as things improve.

I have been given Cat Metacam at .23ml x 1 day 🙄 a tiny bottle of 3ml! I told her I was not happy at all and would have preferred dog metacam. I said her dose was pretty useless too, she will think I am a right old cow! 😆 Luckily I have some dog metacam left from Ginger’s haypoke earlier this year. I will ask her for Dog metacam when I go back on Friday and see what she says.
I have Remend corneal eye drops will that be ok? Instead of the viscotears?

Thanks everyone, she has been out and had a run around the lounge, eaten some hay and seems a bit more chipper in herself. I have caught Hector licking her eye :yikes: I’ll keep an eye on him, I know he only wants to help her but can’t imagine his mouth will be very good for a sore eye

Get well soon Kiki x

I only have dog experience with eyes but the remend gel is a good lubricant for the eye and my specialist eye vet agreed so I’d use that alongside the other.
And we always did the drops through the day but starting first thing early in the morning and squeezing them in as late on before bed as possible when we were needing to give them very often.

Hope she heals super fast x

Remend is fine. No extra human tear gel needed in this case; Remend is the vet version in terms of lubrication. Not all vets are giving it as it is in the grey area of non-POMs (prescription-only medications).

Chloramphenicol is generally used in more severe eye injuries; so I want to make sure that you have everything you need. ;)

That’s good to know, just wish she would give me dog metacam I’ve never seen such a tiny bottle at 3ml

Many thanks for all the info and well wishes for Kiki, she is as bright as a button despite her eye and eating well. Did the night shift drops at 4.00 am I had forgot how awful it is 🙂
Hector hangs around my feet and tries to chew my toes while I medicate her 🙄 he’s being very protective, not sure she appreciates it, still no more eye licking
