How old is she? How long have you had her? @ktsjs xx

my two long haired pigs were born 5th june last year. i’ve had them since they were born because one of my guinea pigs was pregnant when we got her (we didn’t know). was even more surprised when their hair didn’t stop growing (their mum is pretty short haired) 😩

TEN? my word! i'll look at electric clippers :) unfortunately the closest guinea pig rescue to me is about 8 hours away 😩 the vet i go to is expensive and also no one else has been able to get her to stay still in the past (when she had to get an injection last year not even a vet nurses + the lady at the desk could keep her still for the vet so i have to hold her at the vet anyway hahaha

no problem! you’re so lucky lol thankfully my other 2 don’t need brushing at all which i see as a huge blessing 😂

I have had 2 long haired piggies and currently have a peruvian (never again I have to say). she is exactly like you describe in your post, Kicks bites, Jumps off what ever I put her on. I find that she is much better with baths than brushing. I bath her once a month or so (but regularly) and then hair dry her and brush her with a wide toothed plastic comb. Then I can brush her out easily for a few weeks as her coat is soft and silky smooth. This is easier than trying to comb matts out of her.

I actually used to find my alpaca much easier to brush out as their coat keeps much less tangly as it is curly it does keep off the floor a bit. She used to hate being brushed until I changed combs and then she sat much easier.

Metal combs are really not recommended for lang haired piggies as it tends to tug at their coats and are too harsh. Since I switched to a wide toothed plastic comb it has been much easier.

I use a plastic mane comb designed for horses. This is the one i use. Equestria Sport Mane Comb Bot Blocks | HorseLoverZ

I've ordered a non metal comb and a brush as well to see if that helps any. Thanks for the tip!

Just one more thought, it helps to not do it on your lap but to use a “foreign” surface as I think my pig is quieter in the box on the kitchen table as she is more scared (that sounds awful, not meant that way) and keep the sofa for cuddles and positive things. If I had her on my lap I’d stand no chance!

I only bathe when absolutely necessary, for example when needing to use anti fungal shampoo or the like. Bathing is just traumatic for them most of the time (and for me!)

I've always tried doing it on my lap because I thought I'd be able to secure him better, but I'll give this a try thank you!

wow, amazing she stays still in the box! my girls have a habit of trying to jump onto me whenever i cut/brush their hair or bath them whether they can actually make the jump or not (which has resulted in quite a few misses/falls). rather than being fidgety, when mine need to pee they just suddenly quietly stand still (they are normally very talkative and either are always moving around or lying down) 😂
yeah, i think i’ll have to take a gradual approach to it... i have to trim the hair on their sides and their fringes as well because it doesn’t stop growing. the hair on their sides drags along the ground and their fringe gets so long they can’t see. that’s what i try to do but she jumps as soon as i touch the hair :(
they are fine with chin rubs and being carried but don’t like being touched on their back/rear and don’t tolerate much on their head either. i haven’t noticed any symptoms of parasites or infection and they’ve been like this since they were babies so it’s not out of the ordinary for them

Wow, your dark piggy looks just like my Bobby......and he's exactly the same. His hair is really overgrown just now, but there hasn't been anyone round lately to help me with him. I just get as much as I can before losing the will to live and try again another day. Sorry, not much help, I know.IMG_20190323_102223.webpDSC_0326.webp

My long haired pigs won’t let me brush or cut their hair. they jump around like bulls in a rodeo and squeak like crazy and sound/look very distressed in general. today i tried to cut bubbles’ hair and when she jumped from the table onto my SHOULDERS, jumped in to my down jacket hood & instantly peed so much it went all the way through it, i decided this is enough! i can’t keep doing this with her & something needs to change! she is SO bad at grooming herself and her hair around her feet and butt gets so matted even if it’s only an inch long i am seriously considering just shaving her! brushing her hair is out of the question, she completely ignores any food bribes to stay still and fully focuses on escaping & also bites me a lot so the idea of putting us both through that multiple times a week is a big no and this problem is just getting worse with age. if anyone has any ideas on how i could make taking care of her hair any easier it would be very much appreciated! 🙏🏻
pictures are of naughty pigs in question (what their hair looks like when it’s long)

I know this is off topic but your piggies are gorgeous! No wonder mommy lets them get away with no hair cuts, lol. In all seriousness I hope things get better, matting hair and such can be scary. :(

What sort of brush do you use Eileen?

I just hold mine firmly under one arm and get my special round ended slightly curved upwards scissors and snip away. They dont like it but stay pretty frozen as they can tell that escape is impossible.

I did try giving them food but they just ignored it!

i use an afro comb on the curly breeds eg.lunkayria,texels,alpaca.i use small animal pin head brush from PAH for straight haired piggies !

Lovely, I’ll look at trying one for my Rosie! She’s a sheltie and has very thick fur 😊
