Has anyone bought / read the Guinea Piglopedia? I've seen it advertised but haven't seen it in a bookshop so I don't know if it's useful or not - no reviews on Amazon! Am hoping it will be a good reference book but would like to know from someone who has read it! Any other piggie books that people can recommend?

Sophie

I liked it. A couple of things I didn't agree with but I'm little Miss Picky when it comes to books- I'd never write one ::)

I've got piglopedia. I qiute like it. I double check stuff with people on here though, as they all have big brains. If you want a good guinea pig book, I recommend getting one by Peter Gurney. He was a guinea pig legend!

Yep. :) Thats why I check with you guys before I belive anything!

Yes, I've got Peter Gurney's one and his Piggy Potions book - but was worried about up to date info, as they are quite a few years old.

Thanks - will order Piglopedia as a present for myself (and the piglets!). There's so much info on this forum now, I keep questioning everything that I'd taken for granted like the bedding and what I'm feeding them - all sorts of things I didn't know before! Thanks for all your help

Sophie

I would recommend Piggy Potions to anyone who has a Guinea, I purchased Peters last book and I am going to start reading it today.

There is so much info in them, but i find if i'm ever in doubt i'll just ask someone on here.

I have piglopedia and i think its brill i have about 50 piggy books it right about the date thing some of the 70s and 80s books are still saying things like to keep a piggy and a rabbit together is good so i always mainly end up going back to piglopedia i think its the best and all peter gurneys good are good :smitten: :smitten:

ooh... I might look for this book too! lol... do you think they would sell it in australia?

Maybe! You may as well look! Some of the British sites might post to Australia too!

I have piglopedia and I do not like it at all, I think... I may put it on ebay, I much prefer Peters Gurneys Books, they are wrote with passion but there is something about the piglopedia I do not like but I can not put my finger on what it is.

Its very textbookish. Peter Gurney writes about his own experiences.

Thats what I liked about Peter's, they were in the first person and I hadn't seen that before. Myra Mahoney's is a good read too :) The Proper Care of Guinea Pigs :)

I have piglopedia, rabbit, cat and dog one too O0

There ok but i want to buy the peter gurney one next 0:)

Piggy potions is great, I also have proper care of guinea pigs by PG which is another great book.
I also have what's my guinea pig by PG not a great book but an ok book.
Also have how to care for your guinea pig by Marianne Mays and to me this book was for children or absolute beginners (this book was given to me)
I do want Verda's book which is £29 but that has to wait til next month, when we got some spare cash.

Can anybody post a link to where I can buy Vedra's book please? I didnt know she had a book!

I have written a book called the diagnostic guide to guinea pig problems. this book contains quite a lot of the information included in the rodentologists training program. You are having a problen finding a rodent vet because NONE of the vet schools give any training on rodents, hence the British Association of Rodentologists offer training courses which are available to members of the public. We do have 3 students in the west country but they are all at the early stages of their training at the moment.
If you e mail me your postal address I can either send you a copy of my book £29.50 inc p/p.you can pay via pay pal or post cheque made payable to v stanley spatcher to Cct/Bar 1 Splash Lane, Wyton, Huntingdon Cambs PE282AF, or for free I will post you a copy of the corrective dentistry section. I can at a later stage let you know when the students down your end of the country are 'up and running'.
Generaly speaking one broken tooth should not be a problem, most problems occur when 2 either top or bottom get broken, the owner fails to notice, and the unbroken opposing teeth are allowed to grow on too long before the broken ones reach the correct length. When a double fracture to teeth occurs the unbroken ones should be cut to the same length as the broken ones. That way both sets, after a few days occlude correctly again. Failure to do this often results in a permanant mal-occlosion.
I do have a qualified rodentologist in Dorset but she is currently unavailable due to problems with elderly sick parents. The next nearest to you would be either David Thomas (rhondda south wales) Eugene Tiltman( west Sussex) or Chriss Slade (reading).
Your local vet could check the back teeth by first giving the guinea pig a drink to wash down any food, then empty the mouth of any remaining food by sucking the contents out with an empty 1ml syringe. If he then uses the longest thin tube from his otoscope set he can introduce this into the back portion of the mouth and view each back tooth individually. There would be no need to give the guinea pig an anaesthetic either wrapp the guinea pig up in a thin tea towel or pop him into a small plimsole bag and hold him whilst the vet has a look. Hope you find this information helpful. Kind regards Vedra.

PS, grind up his normal food in a coffee bean mill, mix this fine powder to a smooth paste with prev boiled water and after cutting a 1ml syringe across the barrel, give him a few meals a day untill his eating and weight are back to normal. 2 drops of Abidec human baby vitamins from your chemist will prevent him from getting a vitamin defeciency. Weigh pig daily and adjust amount of food according to weight.

Thats the book

You cannot look at the teeth properly with an otoscope,it is best to use buccal pad seperators, you then have a clear view of the mouth. My vets use this method which was taught to them by Peter Gurney.

Vedra uses Buccal Separators too (she taught Peter Gurney :) ) but this vet probably does not have any, making the best of what you/'ve got I think it is :)
