Just wondered if anyone had taken out insurance for their pigs? Most companies only do dog/cat/rabbit but I'm sure someone must cover guineas? with the massive vet bills I have had recently with Freddie's gammy leg I wish I would have been covered! rolleyes

I couldn't find anyone who insured piggies (although I didn't look that hard tbh), so I started putting money aside instead. I posted this thread but Wiebke makes a good point about exotic pet insurance in this one.

My only problem is with the money I put aside, I buy goodies rather than save for vet care, which defeats the point really! rolleyes I still have my c.card as back up though.

yeah I guess that is the best way! Freddie's foot has cost me over £150 for the initial consultation and meds and she said he may need 6 weeks of treatment costing another £40 per week, and thats without any future check up costs mallethead mallethead, I had to pay £100 a few weeks ago for Sandy's persistent ringworm as well, they are worth it though!

Can't decide

Hi,

I'm a new owner and what you're all saying makes sense in regard to insurance but I can't help thinking it might be worth it in the long run.

I got 2 confusing quotes though from exoticdirect. One quote for two exotic animals (where I had to put a minimum value of £200) was £38/year for death cover :( £127/year for vet fees or £143 for theft, death and fees - excess £50 per treatment, which seems "ok" I guess but how often will they need treatment which costs over £50?

The second quote was for 2 small mammals with no minimum value was £175/year for just vet fees and again an excess of £50... So it's cheaper to insure an expensive pet than a piggy?:{

What do you all think? I suppose it's a question of how often they will need expensive treatment. I know a lot of you don't really advocate insurance but does anyone actually have insurance for their piggies?

All my four pigs are insured at a cost of about £35 per pig per year. This is in Sweden, so not applicable to you, I guess... The deductible amount is about £50, and the insurance doesn't cover dental problems, PTS, meds, castration/spaying,nailclipping and a few other things.

I have it mainly to be able to say "go ahead" should one of my pigs need an operation for a cyst, abcess or bladder stones. Those operations often cost about #600 in Sweden, so would be a big cost right then and there.

I know many people don't insure their piggies though, and prefer to set aside money each month instead.
