Hi all,

My two piggies won't eat any fruit i put in for them. Should i be worried?

So far we have tried pear, apple, raspberries, banana and galia melon. All were nice and ripe and cut up into small chunks. The first time we tried apple they did eat some, but yesterday they left it all.

Should i be worried? They're eating plenty of greens and carrot etc, plus P@H nuggets. Will they still be getting all the vits they need?

Help!

Fruit has lots of sugar so I wouldn't be worried about them not eating it. Mine rarely have fruit.

hiya, like karen said dont be worried, aslong as they are getting a good mix of veg there is no need for fruit mine get it as an occasional treat..as well as carrot and cabbage maybe try a few other things such as pea pods, brocolli, baby corn/corn on the cob, mangetout, celery (cut up into small chunks) and also a little grass and dandelion from your garden if you have any :)

theres a big shopping list at the top of the food section, try bits from that everytime you go shopping just buy a new thing to try..sounds like you have fussy eaters..ive got two of them! lol

Hi teabag

No, don't worry, vegetables are more important for them. My sows are quite fussy about fruit and won't eat it either, whereas my boys like a bit of fruit now and then. It's all down to their personal taste :)

Hi you, I wouldnt be worried at all! I had loads of piggies and they all have their fave foods.... maybe they will try it in time or maybe they haven't got a sweet tooth! As long as they have plenty of veg and hay, they be fine! :D :D :D

Don't worry, mine only have it as treats, they do love it but as karenrgpr said it has a high sugar content and shouldn't be fed regularly anyway. :)

Oh phew! I was thinking my piggies would end up with health probs! They absolutely tuck into their veg like demons tho. Lots of cabbage, kale and carrot every day, plus cucumber and bit of lettuce. Spinach and corn on cob is on the list to try next week i think. Plus will try them on pea pods, as seems on here guineas like them.

They so spend a couple of hours a day in their run too munching on grass, so i'm sure they get enough good stuff. Our lawn is quite clover and dandelion heavy, which is lucky! We purposely didn't weed it when we sewed it so the guineas would have some nice treats!

hi, thats good that they like their veg, dont give too much spinach at a time though just buy a little bag if you can then the rest doesnt go off, unless you eat it..my boys are cabbage lovers and like spring greens/kale etc

most guinea pigs do like peas in pods yeah..my boys are fussy and dont really take a huge interest unlike my girls who love them!

all mine like corn on the cob if you shop at asda/tesco they do them with the husks/silks on too which everybody likes :)

Grapes are the only fruit I can guarantee Meg and Lou will eat. They will sometimes attack a bit of melon but not all the time. And apple gets disgusted looks. ::)

Mine love most things and they eat the majority of fruits. I find I have to experiment with different types though. I go to so many different shops to get their foods as they have favourites from each and if I buy them something that's not their favourite they get grumpy and wont eat it. (They're a little bit spoiled.... hehe)

My Cobweb refuses to eat fruit full-stop.

Although he does love a bit of banana skin now and then. I don't give him it very often. He's super-picky. He loves carrot, baby corn and romaine lettuce. He's such a diva when it comes to food!

My guinea pigs Hriusha is the same way. He is so picky. Shura will eat anything though, and this is helpful with encouraging Hriusha to eat new foods. Some pigs are very fussy. Shura will eat ANYTHING except he doesn't like tomato, rasberry and grapes.

They won't eat any fruit. So i'm not gonna try them with it anymore. We've introduced some new veg this week and they've yummed it up. Also eating plenty of nuggets and grass so i think they'll be grand.

We had peas in pod, water cress and broccoli last night and they yummed it all up. They love the water cress :) :)

Try Oranges! My pigs go crazy for them! Just as long as the veggies you are feeding your cavies are high in vitamin C, I wouldn't worry about scurvy. O0

Peter Gurney RIP 0:) sez in his book that piggies can be quite fussy about fruit - which Ive found to be true. My girlies are definately veggie pigs!

They do eat fruit occasionally though. They used to HATE banana - think it was the wierd texture... but gradually they've come to love it. They also like honeydew melon which is a great fruit for them to have in the hot summer. They've tried grapes, apple, pear and oranges which they're not very fussed on.

Mine don't like bananas either, but they just tried their first apples today(well, first apples since I brought them home, I don't know how/if they were given apples at the pet store.) and they loved them! Btw, I know it's perfectly normal, but does anyone else's cavies leave the orange peel after eating the fruit? :-\ ? Just wondering.

I've given up trying them with fruit. I've tried 2 types of melon, strawberries, raspberries, pear, banana, apple and they won't go anywhere near it! They ate apple the first time, but since haven't touched it.

On the other hand i gave them corn on the cob for the 1st time last night and they IGNORED cucumber and ate it ALL up :o :o :o :o

guinea pigs are fussy lil things my boya wouldnt touch carrot from about 3 weeks old, i tried big ones little ones, organic one then i got some that still had the bunches on top..they ate that then after than they eat up any carrot be it topped, little, big or cut up etc and its gone in minutes!

try grapes, mine love them
Oh yes...tried grapes as well, didn't go anywhere near them! I just don't think our piggies are fruity! >:D

when u try banana are you trying the banana itself or the skin. try the skins if you havent tried. but only once or twice a week though. my girls dont go much on fruit. and my rabbit doesnt like carrots lol

I give them the flesh... but might try the skins... wasnt sure if they were poisonous or something 98)

;D :D A rabbit that doesnt like carrots! ;D :D

I didn't know they could have banana skin's,they only get banana once a week,so will try them next week,I give mine Galia melon can they have the skin of melon as well

my piggie isn't keen on fruit either, he likes apple but not grapes, strawberries, melon or tomatoes.
I tried him with peas in the pod yesterday, LOL this morning I found he'd eaten the pods and left all the peas in his bowl :D

He LOVES broccolli

fruit is a no no here too. the boys like melon but only the skin.

so its carrots, cucumber, celery, and the odd but of parsley and lettuce with timothy hay mixed with herbs for them.

louise
