Hello all!

To preface my story, I do not own any guinea pigs. I work at a pet store and although I am not thrilled with the fact that we carry animals at all, I am lucky enough to work with many people that care very deeply about the animals, even if corporate doesn't.

A couple months ago we got a shipment in of new baby guineas. Something was very wrong with the babies and three out of four of them died within two days. Unfortunately there was no necropsy allowed so we don't know what caused this. The fourth baby was very wobbly and had all the symptoms associated with an ear infection as well as an URI. We took him to the vet (a well trusted one, thankfully) and the vet confirmed what we thought. He has now gone through two rounds of antibiotics and the head tilt and circling has yet to let up. The vet says that it is probably a permanent inner ear issue caused by not getting vet treatment soon enough (as he probably developed the infections before we got him). We are now planning to adopt him out as special needs and I am considering taking him home since I have grown quite fond of the goofy little guy.

My question is: would he still be best off being housed with another guinea pig? I know that companionship is HUGELY important for guineas but I am concerned that due to his issues he could be bullied and would be unable to work out the tussles that come along with adjusting new guineas to each other. I don't want to enter into a situation where I adopt another guinea pig (not from our store since I don't want to contribute money to the fact that we keep animals) and that guinea turns out to be dominant and the head tilt guinea gets hurt.

Hi welcome to the forum. It is wonderful that you are thinking of adopting him. I can't see any reason why he couldn't have a friend in time. Taking him dating at a recommended rescue would be your best option. Are you in the UK?

Do you know what antibiotics he has been on? is it 2 different types? some pigs are left with a permanent head tilt after an infection and can lead a happy (if wonky) life. Ther are members on here with pigs like that. It is is important to be certain that the infection has gone though. As far as I am aware Zithromax is one of the most effective antibiotics for an ear infection. Is he on any pain relief too like Metacam?

I am in the US and the closest rescue is two hours away. So possible, but not ideal.

I would have to check our information to see what antibiotics he was on. He was on metacam temporarily but is no longer. The vet said that the infection was gone. He has head tilt, runs in circles pretty consistently, and shakes his head a lot. Other than that he seems fine. He eats veggies (plus his food and hay) with vigor and I see him drink water throughout the day.

He does however seem to react quite strongly to starts and other things. He'll fall over if he's not expecting something and I just wanted to see if y'all thought he'd be okay with a friend. I don't want anything bad to happen to him as, yes, I do care for him a lot.

You could see if the rescue offer dating, and if they do it would be worth the trip if it is doable.

I am thinking that it would be a good idea to restart the Metacam if the vet agrees as it is an anti-inflammatory too. I am going to tag a member who knows a bit more about the different medications etc @Pebble

Hi! It is great that you want to adopt the little guy and give him a happy home. The persistent head shaking worries me; it hints that there is still an irritation in the ear. Could you speak to the vet and see whether he could have ear mites or a build-up of wax?
