Just caught up with this thread Laura, fingers crossed for you and Percy-Roo.

Hi Laura

Given the symptoms you describe - I suspect his biggest issue at the moment is fluid on the lungs. If this is proved to be the case with the Xray - he will need high dose diuretics to remove the worst of the fluid over the next few days.

Frusemide - 6-10mg/kg for 2-3 days (be careful he doesn;t get dehydrated) to kick-start the fluid removal process dropping down to a maintenance dose of 2mg/kg for another 7 days.

As to what is causing it:
a) respiratory infection
b) heart issues
c) kidney - infection can;t be ruled out given his recent UTI's

Note I haven;t even mentioned asthma!

If it were me I would be wanting an Xray to determine if there is any heart/kidney involvement and antibiotics as well as frusemide to help stabilise the current symptoms. Also keep an eye on his food intake/gut movements as he made also need a gut stimulant

Poor Percy Roo - hope he is feeling better soon!

Thank you hun! :) I will speak to the vet today, she does want to xray him as she is very concerned with his heart :( poor little fella, hes ate last night (cc) and some parsley! hurrah. However this morning he hasnt moved from his cosy beach hut.

I will keep you updated thank you so so much for your advice, currently printing it out to take with me :)

Oh no Laura - just spotted this and just want to send loads of hugs and healing vibes to Percy-Roo :laluot_29:
C'mon little fella, get well soon xoxoxoxo

Vets in an hour for xrays and I'm absoloutly dreading it. I don't want to go. :( his breathing is worse panting and i can feel his heart beat though his chest very very fast and he keeps making chocking noises which wake him up from his snoozing.

He's currently alseep in my arms, I'm reading him storybooks (hehe i used to read to him when i first got him home from the rescue), I'm trying to do everything i can possibly do to keep him warm and comfortable.

aww laura I'm so sorry to hear percy-roo isn't well,. I hope he'll be ok, any updates yet?

Sorry! House phone has been ringing and ringing ever since we've got back (Percy-Roo is a wee popular in the family).

Right to let you know I am indeed back from the vets.

We're not out of the woods yet however we've been given a better direction of where we are going! I know i shouldnt be bounding with joy just yet but I'm so pleased ive came home with him.

Percy-roo does have fluid on his lungs - possible infection?, nothing wrong with his organs or heart - its dropped today still high but not as high as yesterday almost his normal rate .

He’s been given four shots poor baby! A higher dose diuretic, a steriod injection, something beginning with z-zimmax- zitamaninx? And hes been given an antibiotic furosamide and he’ll need another two doses daily for the next couple of days.

The vet, Katy, is worried that he’ll develop pneumonia so is wanting to get his chest and breathing sorted asap, and shes also concerned with his lack of appetite. I’ve been told to phone as soon as i get up tomorrow and inform them of his progress. : )

However since arriving home from the vets, Percy-Roo settled down in his beach cuddle cup for about half an hour and slept. When i went to check on him about half an hour ago he was stretching out of his bed nibbling (!) some hay. Woohoo! I haven’t seen him eat without assistance for about five days now.

He’s still getting his cc before bed though :))

I know hes nowhere near better, and we've got a long couple of weeks ahead but today when the vet injected him instead of being droppy and subdued he had some fight and a very hoarse wheek escaped from him. Perhaps the CC and syringing him water is helping?

Oh.

P.s forgot to add....i have a couple of dog microwaveable cuddle pillow that heats up.....is it a good idea to put this under the vetbed? Or will this cause more of a temperature difference in the hutch?

oh you sound much more positive hon, good luck with him, give him a mahooooosive hug from me and mine x

I burst into happy tears when i left the vets, i was expecting her to say that there was nothing more they could do for him and the best thing was to let him be pain free. :(

And thank you i shall give him a huuuuuuge cuddle when i go to give him his supper (currently tabby is snuggling him :)) )

thank you for your reply too :) x

Aww this is good news! It sure sounds like your vets know what they're doing, and they want updates! Pull through Percy pig!

The vet is brilliant amazing lady, she remembers everything too. Like today when i came in...."Percy! I didn't want to see you back today, you should be back with Tabitha enjoying your parsley!" :))

Good news, you know what your dealing with. big hugs to you.

C'mon Percy-Roo you can do it, lots of healing vibes your way x

Glad to hear he has a proper diagnosis - infection is most likely given his organs are OK

Wow Percy Roo - your vet is cool!.
OK - so fruseamide is the diuretic - you will need this for a couple of days up to a week to get rid of the fluid - going forwards, you can get an oral solution called frussol from the vets which is the same med as the injection - dosage 4-8mg/kg short term for the next 2-3 days
Zithro-max is the special piggie antibiotic - (Furry friends Uncle Simon prescribes this where most vets won;t - so like I said earlier - you have a cooll vet!). You will need zithro-max for a minimum of 7 days to kill all the bugs;
Finally - the steroid injection is to reduce inflammation and given you might have an infection i wouldn;t give any more of these (steroids also suppress the immune system, and therefore enable bugs to create havoc if given over any length of time) so if you need a further anti-inflammatory then opt for metacam which also provides pain relief

Good to hear asthma is no longer on the agenda

However since arriving home from the vets, Percy-Roo settled down in his beach cuddle cup for about half an hour and slept. Watch for his poo output - he may still need a gut stimulant - in his case zan-tac is a better bet (2-6mg/kg) then metoclopromide and can be prescribed in a phone call rather than a vets visit

He’s still getting his cc before bed though :))

Keep doing this -it's vital

I know hes nowhere near better, and we've got a long couple of weeks ahead but today when the vet injected him instead of being droppy and subdued he had some fight and a very hoarse wheek escaped from him. Perhaps the CC and syringing him water is helping?

Yep - the CC and water is an absolute lifeline for him now to keep his guts and fluids maintained properly- and as I said earlier be prepared to have to give zan-tac imminently given he hasn;t eaten properly for 5 days to get his gut moving properly. (2-6mg/kg for 2-5 days).Monitor his poo output - if he isn;t pooing tomorrow (today) then a quick phone call to your vet to authorise the dose rate is a must. You can get zan-tac from the supermarket and we can help you make it up to the corrrect dose....this is the last step in a series of meds that have saved Percy Roos life

It's amazing how, given
a) the clinical condition is recognised - which means the right open-minded vet
b) the right "agressive" meds - including the vet being prepared to prescribe off-license and
c ) a dedicated owner
that such a lovely piggie like Percy Roo can have his whole prognosis turned around in the space of less than 24 hours.

Well done Laura - Well done Percy Roo - and well done your lovely vet!

Brimming with happiness that this now has a good outcome
