Hi everyone,

I have read online that pea flakes are good as a treat for guinea pigs and I just wanted to see what your thoughts were on them? This is because (I did speak about it briefly in another thread) I bought them treats from the brand 'Tiny Friends Farm', but I did get some mixed reviews from people. I am still going to keep them on the back burner until I have my consultation with the vet. Of course, the best food for guinea pigs is a constant supply of fresh hay and veggies, but I just want to know what 'treats' are good for them apart from the occasional piece of fruit x

I think pea flakes are a bit of a fad based on online videos where people use them as bribes to get piggies to do tricks! They are safe to feed but fattening I believe, so should be strictly limited to 2 or 3 handfed peaflakes at a time. When I first got my piggies I spent a fortune on fancy snacks including peaflakes that they never really liked... now the only treats we feed are hay based, they love Rosewood hay cookies once a week or a small handful of readigrass once or twice a week- they usually get hay based treats on cage clean/playpen days and I dont feed pellets on those days because these hay treats are quite rich!

I have not seen any videos on that, but they probably do exist. Where can you buy Rosewood hay cookes from?

I agree with PigglePuggle . It is too easy to spend a fortune on fancy snacks .... many of which are not necessarily good for guineas .

Hay based treats are the most suitable...or maybe some forage ? I highly recommend this site

Would one a week per guinea pig be okay?
I don't actually know. Do you mean pea flakes, if you like getting a out and about and not ordering online and getting any old quality, I would use the range for hay cookies, I like to be able see what I'm buying. But amazon do sell them.

Where would we be without Amazon 🤣

Ps that statement IS rhetorical 👍

If you are not keen on internet shopping ,
I have seen hay cookies in some shops .... including The Range
I use Amazon all the time lol! Mainly because I don't always get the time to go shopping, but I will definitely be taking a trip to the rang!

I got mine some pea flakes - i used them to build up some trust with Winny - she has been with us since May but was still very wary of me and these did the job of getting her to trust me a bit more... they do go mad for them and i do limit them ...

They both really do go mad for them... All I have to do is rattle the box and they are both there at the end of the cage trying to get them!

Sounds like my gerbil, he climbs in the bag haha, then can't decide what one to have

I might start doing that with Bert. He is the shy/submissive one at of the two who is the noisiest weirdly lol

Everything!
My boys particularly like birch and the dandelion root but to be honest all of it is a hit with them! I bought the winter survival pack last time.
Piggie parcels is run by a lady who on this forum
Oooo good! Do you give it to them as treats or mixed with pellets/ veggies?

i mix in total of a small handful of a variety of the forages (so about a teaspoon or so of about three or four different types) into a pile of hay. They then dive into the pile munching though the hay to find the forage! I give them some a few times a week.

Would you recommend the winter survival one? There is so much food lol

Yes I would recommend it. It took my two a little longer to come round to the marigold flowers but now they really enjoy them.
Okay great! I just wouldn't want to buy something and they hate it lol

I get a mixed box of stuff from Piggie Parcels.
I mix a bit through their pellets when I decant the bag into a tub.
They get a handful of mixed forage per week- it usually only lasts a day.
Sometimes they get another handful scattered in the cage but not every week
Mine love the marigolds but have decided they don’t like carrot pieces any more.
Piggies can be fussy

Yeah I think I will buy the winter one as it is getting colder and seems more practical and just scatter it/mix different ones in their play pen

Is mixed forage leafy greens?

@Ellie-May . I like how much research you are doing for youre pigs, they are going to be so happy and healthy I remember when I was doing this, there's still new things I'm learning. Like I said before I'm in the whole learning about good Rat diets and enrichment now, still trying to nail the gerbil diet but it's pretty difficult

Aww thank you! It means a lot to hear this. I am really glad I found this forum because it is a lifesaver lol. I feel that everything I am learning/doing is paying off because it is the small things that are showing. Like today they both came up to me to collect their veggies and came and licked my finger lol. It is the small things :)
