Hi Everyone, as always I'm a bit of a lurker and I really enjoy reading the posts. Thank you for all the advice you've indirectly given me!

We've been feeding Pets at Home Timothy Hay since we got our wee hobbits in January, but I'm not massively impressed by the quality, I know I'm not the one eating it, but it doesn't look overly appetising to me, although they do eat it and are putting on weight and their teeth look great, etc.

I bought them a bag of Burgess Excel with dandelion and marigold for a change the other day, and they seem to really like it, I don't think there's as much waste and it definitely seems to me to be better quality. The wee 1kg bag isn't going to last all that long and I hope I don't disappoint them by going back to the PaH stuff.

I've been looking online and there's a wide variety of suppliers and a wide variety of costs, and in fact the P@H price is not that bad, considering I would be paying delivery if getting from amazon. So this led me to search for other hay suppliers online and I found Hay Box and the pictures certainly make it look really good. The reviews seem to be mainly positive, and while there's a lot of rabbit owners, there are some guinea pigs there as well. Anyone have any personal experience of this product, or any others you would recommend?

With so much of their diet being hay, then it's something I want to get right for them.

Thanks again, Lainey

I use haybox on subscription and I’m sooo glad I tried it! It’s brilliant. And it’s brilliant hay, though of course it varies from batch to batch and through the year as natural products are wont to.

Particularly at the moment - I didn't have to worry about where my hay would come from or if I’d have enough or what if it’s sold out when the demand suddenly shot up with people ‘panic’ buying.

I have haybox on subscription (guinea pigs and rabbit) and I would highly recommend. The hay is such lovely green hay and fantastic quality. I buy both meadow and timothy from them and would now not go back to any other way of buying hay.

Just to give you another option Nature's Own Pets are another company which sell excellent quality hay it's lovely, soft and very green. They are also very reasonably cheap and offer free next day delivery if you spend over £20 and you can easily get a lot of hay for £20 with them as well as lots of other treats they do.

My two girls love the sweet green hay and also the Timothy 5 a day hay. 👍🏻

Thanks so much, I will give both a good look.
Stupid question, but does the hay actually come in a box? I'm really trying to reduce plastic bag waste so that's another benefit.

I’m a HayBox fan.
I subscribe to a 10kg delivery of meadow hay every 5 weeks.
Mine love playing in it as much as eating it and it does seem to be their favourite hay.
The service and customer care is excellent too

Yes haybox hay does come in boxes.

A 5kg box from haybox measures approx 60cm x 40cm (thought thsr might be useful to you for storage purposes)

That is really helpful, I've got a plastic storage box under and that's pretty much the same dimensions so it would fit just fine. I try to recycle plastic bags and food wrappers at Tesco but with the current restrictions I don't know if their collection bins are available. Recycling boxes is not a problem, our local council have managed to keep their normal service in that regard, thankfully.

I also use Nature’s Own Pets’ ‘sweet green hay’ which is really soft and gorgeous, but they are bagged! I used to get their regular meadow hay and it was the plastic-less-ness of haybox that originally made me swap the regular meadow hay to them.

Definitely good value, and I've compared prices - buying direct or via other websites, eg amazon and far better value getting direct. Consistently good reviews online as well which is always reassuring. Thanks again.

yes, that is possibly the deal breaker between the two suppliers. It's a joint decision tho between me and hubby. I do the research, present my findings, the pros and cons, he hums n haws about the price, then he remembers how much he loves me, and our wee hobbits and makes the right decision.

I find that the best shop bought hays are...

B and m Timothy hay
The range Timothy hay
The range or B and M meadow hay for bedding.
I buy blank bags of timothy from a local petshop aswell.
Alflfa King (Timothy USA) hay- pets at home red bag. Very similar to hay box Timothy.

Online I've only used haybox once, and it was brilliant hay,

Hi again lovely people, I just wanted to pop back on and say thank you for all the responses and advice. I decided to give Haybox a chance as the lack of plastic was a big plus point for me. A late-ish night order on Tuesday, and the box arrived teatime on the Thursday, so very impressed re that.
The Hobbits love it! They munch constantly, and its not how it sometimes was with the P@H stuff where they seemed to spend more time nosing about, picking and choosing what to eat, they just get stuck in! I can't believe I expected them to eat that awful stuff for so long.
Another big plus is there's no wee crumbly bits of hay like the other stuff, for every handful out the bag, a load dropped onto the floor or down my front, I felt I was sweeping up constantly.
I also don't have to go out to buy hay, the P@H near us is very good re social-distancing and I tend to go in the morning when it's quieter as well, but between that and the weekly trip to the supermarket I'm trying to stay at home as much as possible.
So thanks again, and I hope you're all doing well and staying safe
Lainey xx

Hi don’t make the same mistake I made by giving Burgess with added dandelion & marigold as this is actually a treat hay 🙈 I have been giving my girls it since we got them a few months ago & no wander they loved it! They are hardly touching the pets at home one so Iv ordered from haybox on the great advice I was given. I thought I was giving the girls the best hay only to realise after posting here it was a treat hay! You do get a burgess grass hay but it’s expensive. X

Thanks, I only ever bought the one bag before I ordered the Haybox hay, and I'm so impressed with that I won't be bothering with the Burgess D&M. But thanks for the heads up, cos I hadn't realised it was a treat hay.

I agree the pets at home doesn’t look very appetising so that’s why I decided on haybox as it looks so good & a lot of people use it here so must be x

Oh that’s fab they only had the 1. I just hope my girls start eating a bit more of the pets at home one till the haybox arrives. I’m so glad I posted on here otherwise I’d still be feeding the girls it x

My lot are huge fans of HayBox hay. We’ve had some batches that were slightly less appealing than others but that is the nature of hay and they still eat far more of it than they did of some of the bags I had bought previously. It’s been a godsend during lockdown to have a regular supply delivered. And the boxes are always a big hit.

I’ve got two boxes on the way. Thing is I’m not quite ready for them but I was worried they’d be slow because of, well, you know, so I’ve ordered a bit early and it’ll be here less than 48 hours later! If you don’t hear from me I’ve disappeared under a pile of hay!

Be careful in your pile of hay - those hay pokes can be very painful 😉
