I noticed a few days ago that our 2 pet dogs were scratching a lot and I discovered fleas on them so they were treated with frontline. Today I was giving Barney a health check and I saw one huge flea on him, tried to catch it and get it off but it disappeared too quickly. What on earth do I do? It's definately a dog flea as it is so visible. He's nearly all white so I wondered if that's why they're attracted to him? Please help me!

Dog fleas can't live on a piggy so it won't be a long term problem. However if your dog's have fleas then so will your house, there are sprays and treatments available to clear them. Otherwise they will get them back.

I would bath your pig with insecticidal shampoo in case they have laid eggs - the big fat ones are females. Johnson insecticidal shampoo for small animals is very effective.

You may find that frontline isn't very effective - because it's been around a while now, the fleas are becoming resistant to it, so if its still a problem after you've treated your house (which you're gonna have to do! - best to get a spray from your vet, a lot of pet shop products are largely ineffective) then it may be worth trying an alternative product.

frontline does work.... i can sell it, you need to get a igr spray from a pet shop, which will work as you have a problem spray weekly till you see no signs, keep frontlining you dogs every 8 weeks, 4 weeks for ticks, if they have johnsons 4 fleas thats a good one, fleas lay there eggs on your dog but drop off as eggs aint sticky so will be in everyroom your dog goes in also you can carry fleas around, i agree with treating the piggy, hope this helps

I moved off frontline three years ago as it really isnt as good as it used to be. You cant re-dose your dog yet but advantix or advocate is a much better insecticide for dogs, a little more expensive but it does the job.

Dog fleas are species specific and only if the population is too high and they are hungry will they feed off any warm blooded animal. Without accusing you of having a dirty house - as I am sure you absolutley havent got - its the warm weather during april which would have caused a population explosion in grass outside. Dose your house and all the soft furnishings with insecticide spray (best do it with piggies out the way) and dose the piggies with small animals specific insecticide.

I had a flea issue when we moved house to this current place, the cats were always in the garden and pepper who is normally pretty flea free (for a dog) had lots of the blighters - one advocate pippette and it was all sorted (did the house too just incase). Havent had the same issue since - I wont let the cats in the garden if I can help it and keep up to date with flea treatments.

Just so you know we don't have dog fleas we suffer more we cat fleas who will bite anything, dog fleas are mainly in Ireland

Cat fleas are persistent little who don't mind living on dogs...or anything else it would seem!

I recommend advocate for dogs - its the newest product on the market, and also covers against lung worm (the common one at the moment is angiostrongylus vasorum, so worth checking to see if your flea treatment covers this!) as well as other intestinal parasites, although not tapeworm.

It's also certainly easier to prevent fleas, rather than cure, so a regular monthly spot on (whether you choose frontline/advantage/advantix/advocate - really depends on what works for you, your dog, and your dogs needs) even if during the summer months, if you're not finding winter a problem.

Fleas are evil little things (I had to deal with a cat today that was riddled in the things, and I'm STILL scratching now!) so I hope you get on top of it!

*scratches elbow*... damn cat!
