Not eating after dental surgery

Not yet we need to book it in but gotta take time off work, probably get it in next week. Had a telephone call with Simon at the start of the week but yeh he really could do with being checked over again.

It would be worth trying to get him seen by Simon. He manages to get so much more pus out and I find it heals so much better after Simon had given it a good flush!

Fingers all crossed for your little one, hope you can get in to see Simon soon x

Little one has started to beg for treats and bite the bars lol. Spotted his jaw is misaligned though, it didn’t always look like this. He had the abscess on his right side so hoping it’s still swollen and on the way to healing ? Also his brother says hi.

I would definitely get him seen by Simon for a recheck soon. It looks like there could still be a build up of pus, pushing the jaw out of alignment. I generally get them rechecked after abscess marsupialisation, within 5 to 7 days. Simon is always able to squeeze more pus out than I would get out. He’s clearly feeling a lot better though xx

Will try to book him in for next week! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Couldn’t book him in until Thursday morning, so hopefully his wound hasn’t healed up too much to get a good squeeze out. It’s still open and producing pus regularly, and we’re cleaning twice a day to make sure it can’t scab over. We force fed some hay into him and he can eat it fine, he just doesn’t want to by himself. The grass goes down no problem, treats are a little more challenging but he’ll happily eat those to himself too. Overall he’s back to being a cheeky chappy, just not eating his hay! Please Oscar, your mum and dad would like some sleep 🙏

Well after a good day of yawning and drinking from the bottle, he seems to have gone downhill again. Not wanting much syringe food and struggling to eat treats except in little bites. How long does it take the teeth to grow back if he’s not been eating hay?
The wound is almost completely healed so I’m worried it’s building up again in there… I think there’s a lump but can’t be sure if it’s swelling, an abscess coming back or me being paranoid. Panicking a little bit.
What happens if it has come back, will they need to do surgery again or can they open up the hole already there? @furryfriends (TEAS)

Simon will be able to open it up, I’m sure. Try not to worry. You’re seeing him tomorrow aren’t you? The teeth may need need a bit of a tidy up and there may be some pressure, if it is building up again. I’m sure he’ll be on the up and up again once he’s seen uncle Simon xx

Soooo I squished the lump when we were cleaning and whole load of runny pus came out 🤢 but glad it’s still coming out and not stuck in a capsule somewhere. Little teeny drain hole! Hopefully Simon can pull it open a little bit. Thanks for the support, you guys are keeping us sane haha xx

Aw, you are doing so well, your care for him is amazing! Abscesses are horrid things but you are clearly getting on top of it. Hope everything goes well on Thursday x

Trip to vets was good, Simon squeezed a lot of pus out 😩 we think his jaw is a bit stiff and he might need a bit of physio to loosen it up.
One more problem to add to his ever growing list of minor ailments… is this bumblefoot? The foot he was limping on is very swollen…. We didn’t notice until this morning otherwise we’d have asked yesterday 🤦🏻‍♀️

Could you ask for AB’s, perhaps Simon may post them out to you?

Argh getting impatient now.
He’s gone back to being lousy again. Not eating grass or treats now. And his back foot is swollen and bruised. Still pumping out a lot of pus too, shouldn’t it be clearing up by now? It’s been 3 weeks since the surgery. Not sure on timescale.
Still on Zithromax, metacam and syringe food. 😢

Abscesses can take a very long time to heal. If no improvement soon, you could speak to Simon about changing antibiotic. Zithromax normally does the trick but occasionally we’ve needed a Metronidazole/ Marbocyl combo to completely sort it.

Yeah we’ve got one more course of Zithromax and an appointment at Easter. He said we might have to swap antibiotics if no improvement after that, but I was a bit nervous cos I’ve only ever read about Zithromax for abscesses! That’s comforting to hear that you’ve had success with something else, thanks!
Really hoping Theres a happy ending after all this. Wanna see my little guy being cheerful again, breaks my heart when he doesn’t even want treats 😢

Zoltan needed 11 weeks of Metronidazole/Marbocyl, but he got there in the end. He had an abscess that tracked through his whole body. At one point it was bursting out in four places!

Week 4 since his surgery and still no improvements. So much stinky pus still, even after two squeezes a day and flushing. I can’t tell if it’s getting thinner or less volume but it seems the same. His wound is very almost healed up too so it’s quite painful for him.

He’s still not eating hay and struggling with treats. He will eat thin strips by hand but picking things up is hard.

Not seeing Simon until next Saturday cos he’s away. When we spoke to him last he said to keep going with Zithromax until we see him again but I feel like we need to be swapping it now. Surely if the antibiotics were doing anything we’d see some kind of small change?
