Update on Caesar

The vet examined him and told me the medicine would cause Caesar discomfort and gave me a small amount of Metacam (.3 mls once a day) and told me to get Caesar some probiotics and pellets to eat. She agreed that syringe feeding and syringe drinking may he needed for a few days. He came with me to the pet store and we got some pellets (since he was on a healthy no pellet diet, I didn't have any) and the woman at the shop sold me a guinea pig food with probiotics. He ate some hay on the drive and seemed to like the freeze dried cranberries I bought him. I just started soaking some pellets in water so hopefully this works.

He's messy with a syringe and I was wondering is bathing him would be alright.

Best split the amount of metacam in two and give twice daily. guinea pigs have a very fast metabolism, so in most cases, splitting works better. Have you been given dog or cat metacam? Dog metacam is three times stronger than cat metacam. Both dosages would be within the acceptable range; the cat one right at the bottom and the dog one in the middle to lower range.

You can wipe him with a damp rag but if a guinea pig is still well enough, it will clean itself up. Some piggies can be very messy. Best have a towel underneath that can soak up the extra!

it often helps to start feeding with a bit of syringe feed, then see whether that triggers his normal appetite and if necessary finishing with more feed. It is a very encouraging sign that he is still interested in food and is eating on his own; in that case, we are talking about topping up rather than syringe feeding fully. You just give him as much feed as he wants in one session. Keep an eye on his weight to adjust the reuqired number of feeding sessions accordingly. You will get a feel for it after a while.

All the best!

He's been given dog Matacam. Should I give it .15 morning and .15 at night?

Another Update

Caesar is willing to be syringe fed. Partially because while I did it the second time, my boyfriend sweet talked him and pet his head where he likes being scratched (and Chris said Caesar hates him). He's still eating very specific food, namely bell pepper. He also ate 1 ring of zucchini and the leafy bit of some romaine. I've gotten him to eat hay by letting him sit in the bag of hay, where it's dark, and munch away.

He has a lot more energy as well!

That's wonderful news ! Please keep a very careful eye on him, if he stops weeing then he needs to see an emergency vet asap.

Unfortunate Update

Unfortunately, last night Caesar began showing signs of his urethra being clogged by the stone. I took him to an emergency vet and they saw his stone lodged in his urethra, as well as a bunch of small stones in his kidneys and he unfortunately didn't make it through the night, Thank you all so much for the help though. You guys helped me make his last days more enjoyable. Thank you so much
