Non exotic vet

I just found a vet five minutes away from my house that will see guinea pigs and one of the doctors has guinea pigs. But they are usually a dog and cat clinic.

The boys regular vet is a 40 minute drive, so it would be nice to go locally.

Should I stick to my old vet who is trained in exotics? Should I try this new vet? One of my boys has CBS and can get ear infections.
 
You would want a vet that has knowledge, experience, interest and is willing to research, but that vet doesn’t necessarily have to be an exotic (exotic not always meaning piggy knowledge). My own vet is a general vet but they have considerable piggy (and rabbit in my case) experience and knowledge.

Maybe you can be registered with both? use the local vet for the more run of the mill things which you know don’t require an exotic;
and go to the exotic for certain issues/if you learn that the local vet doesn’t have the experience of those issues
 
Good idea. If Stripe relapses with an ear infection there is no need to go 40 minutes away, I can just go to the local vet and ask him to prescribe the antibiotics I already know work on Stripe.

Also things like hay poke he could treat. Mites or lice, UTI, URI.

But for teeth filing and surgery I could go to the exotic.
 
I'm about to register with a second vet who is closer to me. I thought I would see them next time we have something like a hay poke. I've just had a problem getting one of mine into my normal vets (exotics) for a general health check so he can have more painkillers for his arthritis. Having to wait 2 weeks for an appointment has worried me. We used to get in same/next day, they have just reduced the number of vets working there. I think it's good to have a back up.

Yeah my regular vet is only in on Mondays and Thursdays so it'll be nice to have other options other than emergency prices. Plus one emergency vet diagnosed Stripe's paralysis as a neurological problem or spinal injury whereas he was simply on the wrong antibiotics. So a couple days later my regular vet got the notes, changed his meds, and Stripe was walking again in a week.
