Hi there I'm hoping some of you will be able to help me. We brought a guinea pig about 3 weeks ago a girl called lola and she is just adorable but very shy! Someone said to get her a accompainion as she might be lonely and read the book and it said it should be fairly easy to mix them. So anyway brought another girl yesterday and another huge cage for the 2 of them.
They met for the first time in the bath as was new for the 2 of them and lola started making this funny noise sounds a bit like a rumble (my son said it sounds like a machine gun lol) and her sides vibrate. They never went for each other just sniffed and chased but was worried about the niose. they then fell asleep one on top of the other in a tunnel so decided to try them in the same bigger cage as didn't want Pippin to think it was "her's" iygm. But lola is still making this noise and I don't like it I partitioned it off by putting a stick wall in the middle and kept swopping them either side but lola is still making this noise and I'm not sure if it's a nasty one or not they both seem ok but just wont leave them alone together yet, anyone know if this is normal? Or any advice on what I should do? :-\ :-\

Sounds to me that 'Lola' is a male :o :(
Id take some piccies of their bits and paste them on here so we can sex them for you just as a precaution O0 Did you get them from a pet shop ? :)

The rumbling can be a dominance thing, Sows do it but I only have seen mine do it when in season. Males also do it to females as a mating dance.

As ILA said Lola may be a male, hopefully not though! If you can put some pics up I'm sure we can all let you know for sure.

Hope all turns out ok and welcome aboard! :)

:o Holy C***! lol

Jeeeez really right 1 min I will take some pic's she keeps going for Pippin's bum area is that what a male would do as well?

;D ;D Yeah mostly males do it and they occasionally hump when they are full of hormones ::) when they get excited - Well help you sex them if the piccies are quite clear O0 If you need help uploading pictures just let us know ;)

Yep a male would try and mount a female. Sows would sniff at first to get a scent but I don't think it would carry on the following day.

Infact you may have 2 boars, I've a rumbler and he still rumbles a lot at his cage mate. I've noticed they sniff more too. Try not to stress. :)

Here is a pic of lola's bit's can't see any tail tho have no idea what I'm looking for lol x

What about the other piggy Pippin 0:) very clear photos so well done for keeping them still ;D Id say looks like a boar to me now 98)

Lola looked like a sow to me at first but when i viewed properly as i only had a glance as my mum was in the room :embarassed: i noticed the shape of the 2 *you know what* but may be just the view not too sure to be honest ;D but i would say sow after looking again ::)
sorry for keep changin my mind it would be very clearer if i was there to see Lola ::)

Oh jezzz well Lola has just tried to hump Pippin!

here is a vid was trying to get the noise for you to see and it all happened dead quick, have seperated them again!

;D ;D ;D ;D OMG *s**t she was biting her wasnt she !! she was humping her wasnt she ;D ;D ;D ;D I heard your voices on the vid

Lola does act and looks liek a boar - Do you have a piccie of Pippins bits ?

Pippin is too bloody riggly and fluffy to tell as she is a big fluff ball tbh deffo think she is a girl.
My hubby can't control her and he is crap with the camera will try and get one when my sister is round as I can't hold her and take pic.

I know we were both in shock ;D ;D ;D

I think I may take her to the pet shop tomorrow to double check for me as if boy and girl can't keep them together can I?

I wouldn't take the pigs to a pet shop some aren't sure what sex they are. I took my 3 boars to a vet to check their sex. I wasn't charged either, for peace of mind I would do that.

:)

Well have looked it up on the net and looks like are lola is a boar :'(

So gutted have spent so much on there new cage and can't have them together!

I am 95% sure lola has testicals what do I do? I deffo wont get rid as my kids adore them x

An option is to get Lola neutered, it will cost around £45.00. Are they pet shop pigs? I would let them know what has happened but DO NOT take them back there, they will only take your Sow off you and give you a male pig. There is the possible chance your Sow is pregnant but she can only get pregnant when in heat which is every 14-17 days. How long have the pair been together? You can tell sometimes when a Sow is in heat, as I mentioned earlier they will act like a boar and rumbled and shake their booty! They can also sit a lot, but sometimes you won't know if they are in heat or not.

Am I right in thinking you have seperated already? If so great, the pet shop may provide you with an additional cage. As you probably know pigs are better living together so I would house them next to one another for now (I have 2 boars like this and get on much better) and consider neutering as that is the only option if you are keeping both, unless you get another boar and sow to live with them. :)

Hope all turns out ok!

No you cant keep them together unless you get Lola neutered O0 or get 2 new piggies if you have the room and let them have a friend each but then again you may end up with all males again and no friend for pippin but i guess you will just have to find a good vet who can sex them correctly as i know my vet sexed my baby boars wrong saying they were all girls :P

Righto cheers you have been a big help. Will take them both to get checked out tomoz as kids at school and nursery woo hoo.
No I wont get rid of either of them I love them both. Is there any chance that LOla could be on heat? Do females hump females when randy?/

Oh yes they do. On New Years Day I found my 8 month old Sow Fleur mounting her sister Flora, it had never happened before. From experience with the girls I would think sometimes they are more hormonal than others. It could well be you have 2 Sows, I really hope that is the case. :)

Keep us posted, oh and by the way they are stunning pigs! :smitten:

Yes sows do occasionally hump other sows when in heat O0 But from that vid it really does look and sound lie a really naughty boar ^-^ I would really like to see more people help you out a little on trying to find out what sex 'Lola' is from that piccie you provided us with but well just have to wait and see if anyone else will help O0

You said you even think Lolas a boar why did you think this ? ? Well if you gently hold him in your lap and try and push slightly around the private area then if a boar his hormones will go around his body and you will see the private parts like balloon up a little bit thats if its a boar ;)

Sorry I'm useless at trying to explain things when typing ::)

oh thanks for that. Well I google pic's and went onto a site called cavyspirit and they showed pic's. And it was the testicals that made me look at the bottom area and she has squishy bits there. She also has a little bit there going on which I know females do as well oh god this is so hard. Not gonna bother her agin tonight tho as i have been looking at her bit's for ages tho haven't touched yet xx0

;D ;D ok as long as they are separated then I'm sure theyll be fine until you know for sure what sex they are O0

:o god yes I will know by tomoz as may take one in the morning with me so I can go striaght to pet shop after school run. How long can they go without a drink?

;DI ask so many questions I know ;D

Well thats what this forum is about O0 asking questions no matter how stupid you may think they are when they arent 0:)
well, if you are planning on taking one to the vets to get them sexed then if they are to be put in a carrier case then id just stick a water bottle on the door section - Not sure how long they can go for without water but i would try and take one with you ;)

Just caught up with this, Lola looks like a girl to me... a rather dominant one who wants the other piggy to know shes the boss.
I usually good at sexing and got all my babys correct (oohhh ark at me!) let us know!

Lola does 'look' like she has female parts but the male bits can sometimes hide and in this case hides very well but i can see now where the outer side of his/her testicles would be ?

I agree Lola does "look" like a sow but does act like a boar. If you gently press above the genital area the penis (if she is a boar) will pop out :)
