I had a letter through from the local Council about the waste i am putting in my 'green bin'

For the last 18 months i have been putting all of my 'piggy waste' in the recycling bin as it states on the information sheet 'vegetarian animal waste' ... however, Newspapers should apparently go in the 'blue box' but 2 weeks worth of rolled up newspaper wont fit in their either! plus it will be 'soiled' so not sure if that would be ok for the picky council!

We only get a refuse collection every two weeks and a green bin collection every 2 weeks (alternate weeks, different bins) After cleaning out my lot of piggies my green bin is FULL after 2 weeks....

anyway... the letter said that i should NOT be putting newspaper in my green bin... so what do i do with it?! if i put it in with my normal refuse collection then i wont be able to get any of my rubbish in there! as after 2 weeks of normal and piggy rubbish in one bin, it will be more than overflowing! :tickedoff: (oooh ranty Jayne!)

Any ideas?

I have written a 'strongly worded' email to the council and am awaiting their response... as i said, they are 'vegetarian' pets and i am not separating the paper shredding (which is allowed in the green bin) from the newspaper as that will be quite frankly a HORRID job! and i dont have time to bag it all up and take it to the tip, which is not great for the environment as surely the newspaper can still be recycled?

Eeeeek! any suggestions greatly appreciated! :smitten:

It's all burnt in the same hole so whats the difference? Newspaper rots... all councils are stupid.

Afraid I don't have any suggestions but tend to agree that the council rulings are stupid! My piggie waste of hay and woodshavings is permitted in the garden waste, but we don't have a bin for it, and instead have to use biodegradable sacks. (Trouble is the new ones they've issued are biodegrading before they come and collect it, which is fortnightly) I put out 14 piggie sacks every 2 weeks (plus "normal" gardening stuff too), but I now learn they are to provide green bins, which no way will take that amount of waste.
Theywant us to recycle as much as possible, surely they should be doing everything they can to encourage us.

we will soon be getting these green bins, and i have given this a lot of thought, and i came up with the idea of getting those machines that make paper brickets,

So i would put my used hay/sawdust in the bin and soak the news paper in a bucket of water then squash it into this brick maker and put those in the paper recycle,

our councils funny too >:( woodshaving in green together with hay etc etc but they dont like it cause as i have so mnay to clean out its always full and the bin men complain. But when i enquire at landfill they said i could only take a carrier bag full and put it in the green landfill bin.How riduclous a carrier bag is what my hamster uses. >:(
So we have purchased and incenrater bin and will burn it then wait until someone complains for burning it arghhhhhhh u never can win.

I put hay and megazorb into the garden waste recycle bin seperating it from the newspaper, yes its not a nice job but I put the paper in the reusable bin. The paper is washed when recycled then used for loo rolls or hospital bed pans/sick bowls.
We are on two weekly collections too and we are a family of five. I can always close my bin lids too.

Well at least i'm not alone! :D

I think if i only had one or 2 to clean out it wouldn't be so bad (i have 8!), but all this sorting out of different materials will make an already time consuming job take longer etc,(although if i have to do it, i have to do it! do love my piggies) maybe i'm just being lazy! lol ::)

Well i guess i had better don the rubber gloves and get sorting between shredded paper, hay and newspaper! oh joy! ?

I have a feeling last time i put the newspapers out in the blue box the bin men didn't take it!
:'(
Does it not matter that the newspaper is 'soiled' if it is washed/reused? oh they are such jobsworths! Grr you pay your council tax and they still want you to do more! but they do less! lol

I would burn it, but live in an end of terrace house so we are quite close to our neighbours and she gets shouty when people burn things or have bbqs (don't you just love your neighbours!) :P

I am all up for recycling, but sometimes i feel that the councils are not helping themselves by being so picky! no wonder people resort to throwing rubbish away wherever they go!

I may bag it up and get my other half to take it to his work and put in the skip! but then that isn't recycling or helping the environment!

Needless to say, i have not yet had a response from the council ::), wonder how long i should give them! >:D

I do like the idea of cubing it up into blocks, again, not a particularly nice job, but space saving! tee hee

I have 8 piggies too :) cleaned out several times a week :) so would have just as much waste ;) I hide the paper LOL under plastic bottles ect ;) I have been doing this over 2 years and its fine just hide the worst ;D yep I also hate doing it had to do it today yukky yukky. But needs must and all of that O0

The house I've moved to, well that area don't do any recycling, we only have black bins for everything which get collected weekly :(

we aren't allowed to put any animal waste in our recycling bin ( the one that goes for composting) I didnt realise and filled it with hay and straw they put a letter through the door and refused to take it. In the end Hubby took the whole bin down to the local tip where it went for composting 98) 98) Whats the difference when it all ends up at the same place :tickedoff:

i take all mine to the local skip because the waste can't go in the bins. the council drives me nuts and someone keeps stealing my recycling bins and the council asked me to pay for more so I told them to stick it and now all my waste goes in the bin or tip. I have had enough of the council. x

I am a bit sneeky. I clean my pigs out on a Friday. Put their waste in a black bin liner, put some normal household rubbish on top of the waste. Tie the bag up and put it in the green bin. I haven't been caught out yet  :D Councils are crap though

Piggie waste, including the newspaper, can be composted

Our council won't allow it if you take it down to the local tip its ok otherwise the bin just gets left full :-\

Update!

I had a reply to my email which says....

"Thank you for your email regarding the green waste bin. Obviously we would prefer paper to be recycled in the blue box. However, as you have already recycled your paper by using it as animal bedding for a vegetarian animal this is perfectly acceptable to be placed in the bin for green waste. I am therefore not entirely sure as to why you received a letter regarding this issue and can only apologies for any confusion caused.

Could you please confirm your address for me so that I can make a note against your address that the paper is from animal bedding."

Halleluja! (or however that is spelt!)... no sorting the poo from the paper! lol xx O0

Hurray! Glad your council were so sensible and accommodating! Maybe they are not all cr&p after all!

We compost ours at home and use it on our veggie beds. Currently picking broad beans, lettuce, asparagus and strawberries! Yum!

my council won't allow me to put piggy waste into the recycling bin even though I explained that it was compostable they said it would be classed as contaminated waste. they've also stopped allowing us to recycle shredded paper as it clogs up the machinery, infact the list seems to have got longer of what you can't recycle....no wonder most of my neighbours don't bother they just put everything in the ordinary bin. i can no longer recycle my newspapers cos I've used them in the hutches.

it is a real pain - i just hope that they don't change their minds! you know what local gov's are like for moving the goal posts! i guess we shall see what happens from now, will be interesting to see if they have made a note that they can take my rubbish bin if it has newspaper in it or not! Won't know till the collection on Thursday!

Very interesting ... I think I will ring my Council to check on whether I can put newspapers from my guinea bedding in my green bin.
We have our green bin, which we put guinea pig waste i.e. shavings, uneaten dried food and hay, and garden plants etc. in that bin. But I always put the soiled newspapers from my piggies in black plastic bags and either put them in the black bin (if we have room! ::)) or take them to the tip.

I will let you know what they say!
Anyway good for you to challenge them!

it may be worth a shot, i just wrote a strongly worded email! (well relatively strongly worded!) and attached a copy of the leaflet that they sent as guidelines for what can go in what bin! let me know how it goes! xx

I have 27 piggies and i dont use newspaper i just use bedding and thats it - if i did use newspaper then i would put it with the rest of the normal general house hold rubbish and not with the bottles etc cause thats gross :P

Our bins do get very full because of all the waste i go through each week esp with 5 of us in the house too ::)

i have a blue wheelie bin for for recycables not glass a black wheelie bin for household rubish and a brown bin which i have to pay £30 a year for the garden rubish i am not supposed to put guinea pig waste in the brown bin but i do put hay in it as to me it is just dried grass and i have to put the newspaper in the black bin all of the bins are collected fortnightly so they do get very full

Here we have our regular black bin, then a blue box (for glass bottles and cans), blue bag (for newspaper) and a green bin (for garden stuff - basically composting). They're collected on alternate weeks. I'm not allowed to put animal bedding in them, which is really annoying :-\ I don't see how some piggy poo is going to hurt anything! We're also not allowed to put any veg peelings into the green bin ?

We do compost a lot ourselves, but unless we turn the whole garden into a compost heap, it just wont be possible soon!

am jealous of you guys getting green bins. we just have blue and black and are not allowed to recycle animal stuff. So mine goes in my usual black bin, which, since getting my piggies 6 weeks ago fills up before the end of the 2 week cycle. Darn it. How folks will cope (whether they own pigs or not) if they DO change to monthly collections is beyond me.

i must admit that i dont mind recycling, but it is just the forced aspect of it! surely it costs them more to recylcle stuff!

If i didnt live in an end of terrace house then i would happily burn stuff, but the neighbours get the hump... it is a real pest! just lucky that they have 'seen the light' as it were... fingers crossed they don't change their mind! x

We have a grey bin for plastic but only certain types of plastic, cardboard, newspapers & glass ( you can't put bleach bottles or any cleaning product bottles in ) Then we have a blue bin for garden rubbish but not soil ! Finally the red bin is for everything else which is basically everything!! The red bin is a weekly & the others fortnightly.

My council will not allow me to put piggy bedding ie nezbedinto green waste bin nor will they take soiled newspapers so now I double bag the lot and put in as non recyclable at the local tip .They say if I take too much they will charge me! Why cant it go in the green skip and be composted what idiots ,I rang the local council they said it was contaminated and should put in a yellow bag labelled and taken to the tip, I cant compost it at home as I have a lot of lovely piggies and I am not reducing numbers just to suit the council Ilove all my piggies they are my special friends and they have more brains than the council grrrrrr
I really enjoyed that grumble ,piggies rule ok. ?
