What kind of thing did you want for your girls? 5 altogether do need quite alot of space - as much as possible and all 5 in that tiny little cage they must be very cramped up and not able to run or anything.

I would definitely work on your mum if I were you. Explan the cage you have is just about okay for 1 guinea not for 5 and that you want to give them more space. I have 6 girls in my big cage and they do have alot of space. If you don't have enough room for a 4 x 2 grid space think of a 3 x 2 one with 3 floors. C&C Cages do take thought and time to put together, you'd definitely need help to do it (I have my husband helping me). BUT they are cheap and flexible - you can change them if you end up with more or less or need to seperate them for any reason. They really are worth it. And as many people have said you can build up if you don't have lots of floor space, that way they get room and can run around and popcorn about and stuff.

I'm so pleased you've come to ask about expanding and been honest about the way they are right now. It's brilliant you realise that it needs changing. If you need any more ideas come back and ask!

2 pigs really, but yeah i will!

and I'm sure earlier you said you had 5 guineas in that small cage?

I would if I were you, they are very good and so easy to adapt to the space you have. I wish I hadn't bothered with an indoor cage (although the one i have is very very good) and just went straight for the C&C, it was only because i didn't know about them that I didn't start off with C&C, they work out much cheaper too.

I agree i wish i just went straight into making a c&c cage rather than waiting! I'm so excited to be making mine soon, as they are so much cheaper and you can easy build up and add levels.

I think you should look on eBay for a big cage or just invest in one of the large three storey ones if you cant have a c&c as the cage you have is very small for five pigs. Also if i were you i would be happy spending the money on a large enough cage for them so they will be happy and have room to move. It may seem like alot of money but just think how happy the pigs will be. :)

Not when i've only got £190.

Bit better, i can't take the hutches inside because there too bolky and i've just realised that i might only be able to stack one cage above the one now, because of pipes.

Thats good that your feeling better.

Well i dont know what else to suggest but I'm sure you will work out something soon. :)

well i have two suggestions!

1) you rehome some of the piggies so that you can give the remaining ones adequate space. (sorry if this seems a bit harsh)

2) you separate the sows into a pair and a trio and give them more space

the cage you currently have is approx 6.3 sq ft the minimum for 1 or 2 pigs is 7.5 sq ft - you could in theory add a mezzanine layer with a ramp that could make your original cage suitable for 2. You will still need to look at buying something with a minimum of 10.5 sq ft for the trio - these numbers are the absolute bare minimums! quoted from http://www.guineapigcages.com/

Ideally you should not keep guinea pigs in your bedroom as they do not sleep all night and this may not wake you up but can affect the quality of your sleep! Maybe consider moving them somewhere else in the house?

What size is the hutch/cage of your other pair and where are they housed?

Hope you manage to get something sorted!

something like this would be more ideal? You would need to make modifications to the ramps to make them safe for guinea pigs but that is relatively cheap

although still would not be able to accommodate a group of 5

I have a homemade version of the Sky 100. (Homemade as in it is 2 similar sized indoor cages that hubby has adapted and made into a two storey). I have 2 11 week old boys and to be honest it is not big enough for them so we are making a new one.

We bought a pack of the grids from B&Q (pricey at £29) and a few sheets of something similar to correx (corrotherm? I think) which were about £7 each. This along with a pack of cable ties is enough to make a much bigger cage for them. Hope this helps:)

hmmm what your saying doesn't make sense! if you ask for help extending you have to be willing to spend money especially since you say you have 190 pounds that is a good amount of money to get some good cages/hutches with.
I knmow you dont want to spend it all but this IS for your piggies welfare and they deserve at least that.
I thought all your pigs were outside the last time you were on the forum so i was quite shocked to see you had an indoor cage.I'm gathering some inside and some out?'
I agree you should seriously think about rehoming some because everyone has helped as much as they can,
C&C cages are the cheapest thing to buy to make a good sized cage and if you arent willing to do that or spend that amount of money i dont see how we can help you,If you are having trouble understanding measurements here is an example of what 3 of your pigs will need

I have that^^^ for my 3 boys with anything smaller eventually fights will break out as they will be stressed and wont have there own space.

this is for two pigs

keeping some money in reserves for vets is a good idea, but you need to make sure that you have their welfare at heart and not greed! My piggies cage which is only for 3 is massive and takes up an 1/8th of my lounge and i do not resent sharing my space with them! They are my pride and joy :)

PigPig-I dont mean to be rude but you shouldnt offer to rehome any pigs like you did with Sophies very special pigs in the rehoming section.
Your cages arent nearly big enough so a rescue wouldnt adopt any to you regardless, also they are hard to handle guinea pigs and need to go into experienced hands with proper sized cages especially seeing as there past isnt nice,i just dont think you should get anyones hopes up about adopting there pigs, your own pigs need your attention before you think of that xx

I didn't offer?
anyway, that was just temporary, they were only put in there 3 days, the've been put into a large two storey hutch, I was will to spend a bit but the problem was room, and my mun!rolleyes! I wasn't aloud to change anything, not even the size upwards.
There ok now, and i was asking for help to extend the cage we've got, by putting another floor in it. still thanks for the information and help!:(|)

It's not my house, it's my parents! When i've got my own i'm going to take it forwards, like you, and maybe run a resscue with enough cages, but at the moment i'm still learning, this year(out of my own money) I've spent nearly a grand on hutches an dcages and runs, not too mention vet bills, food, wter, hay and woodshavings, and newspaper!

That looks very similar in size to the one my 2 boys are in but I know it is too small so have ordered NIC cubes. I can't imagine 5 being in there! How did that happen?

Are you able to extend upwards? You say you don't have the room for c&c which I can appreciate but maybe you could build on top of your current cage? Either with cubes or another cage and attach tubes to the outside so they can climb between the cages. Not ideal but at least they'd have more space.

Or put another cage on top and split the group? Or put 2 cages on top, get another girl and have 3 pairs. I'd still think it was too small but much better than their current situation.

Good luck - I hope I haven't caused any offence :)p

Sorry my post seems to repeat what others have said. I was reading the thread on my phone and it only showed me the first couple of posts. Stupid thing!

Thanks for the info, it happend, because i was fixing the double hutch, and i could have the girls in at the same time, so i put them in the cage until i'd finished(i knew it was too small but it was only for 1-3 days) there back now and happy, and george is in the cage indoors on his own.

I might have the wrong end of the stick but... You really can't bring piggies inside for a few days to suit you and then put them outside into the cold the temperature changes can shock there system and lead to illnesses and in the worst cases death!

btw how big is your double hutch? needs to about 6ft i reckon

Both floors 7ft long, 2ft deep, 2ft high,
I was repairing the hutches, and i couldn't do that whilst they were in it, The hutch is actually rapped in carpet and they have extra hay and bedding.
