Mystery illness? Please help?

I think your best bet is to go over your options with your vet, especially as she has a bit of history.
I believe Zithromax is one of the better antibiotics for abscess’s.

You may find this link nice to read through - Guinea Lynx :: Lumps

Zithromax is certainly one that gets used for dental abscesses but I'm wondering if an oral dose is the only option. I don't know - I'm just wondering whether there's any sort of antibiotic you could just sort of squirt into the hole?! This would get the highest dose into the abscess rather than the highest dose into the gut where it might cause her tummy trouble.
I've heard abscesses can 'track' through the body but I don't know whether this is just an unfortunate one-off unrelated to the ear infection. @furryfriends (TEAS) have you ever had a topical treatment for an abscess on top of a pig or is it always oral/iv?

Just wanted to give final update on gertrude, 5 months on and we have finally won the battle! She is all healed and healthy, little bald spot on her head but all cleared up. It turns out it was an absess that was pushing through her head and ear so that was why treating an ear infection never worked. I followed vets instructions on only cleaning her head when it was leaking and it was actually one of her friends that did a good job of helping her, vet agreed that separating them was too stressful as one of them acts like her mum. Everyone is now happy and healthy. Thank you all for your help and advice, just wanted to assure anyone going through an absess that it does take a looooong time but you will get there in the end.

That's brilliant news, I'm so happy for you- your persistence has finally paid off. 🥰

That is wonderful news! Thank you for the update. So often, we never hear back.

That's a beautiful picture! So lovely to hear when things turn out well 🙂

Hi all I wanted to give a further update on gertrude, one year on and she still gets little scabs, she is absolutely happy and not bothered by them at all and the vet thinks it would be best to leave them be and not operate. She gets a little scab every few months then it falls off clean as a whistle, no blood or pus showing but the tiniest of holes which heals up within a day and then the process starts again. She is truely a happy little menace and lives with it well. Vet thinks she will always have it. The only thing I have to make sure is that her room is Spotless and no flies can get anywhere near her. So there is double fly screens on doors and windows to her room. Just wanted to let people know just incase some vet etc says to give up on your friend because they can live with one if you look after them well, possibly maybe harder if your piggy is outside though x

Final update on Gertrude: in August she suddenly become ill and her Back legs stopped working. And stopped eating. Nothing was able to help her this time round and she unfortunately left us. We think maybe infection spread inside that we could not see. A terrible year, 4 girls and we have lost 3, lost clementine (at 2.5yrs old) to a condition that caused her teeth to grow into her jaws, operated but did not make it, Pepper (2.5yrs old) died from cushing's disease, and lost gertrude to this repeated cyst. (3yrs old) So poor daisy is now alone. She was depressed for 2 weeks but now really happy the happiest I have seen her. Suspected to have ovarian cysts but currently in good shape and popcorning. I have very much learned my lesson to not buy piggies from Pets at home and to adopt in the future! Terrible breeding. Not helped by having no vets in the county of linconshire that know anything about guinea pigs. Hope this thread helps others in the future xx

BIG HUGS

Thank you for your update. I am so very sorry about yet another loss. It's definitely not your fault that you have ended up with such a concentration of rather rare illnesses! Try to take consolation that you have given your girls a happy and good life. Guinea pigs measure their life in happy todays; they do not have a concept for an average life span, so you haven't failed them in any way.

We are here for you in our brand-new dedicated End of Life and Bereavement Corner for your own grieving since it takes time to digest multiple losses and it can really rock you to the core as well as helping with your bereaved girl and any concerns in this direction.

Thank you for all the information, I did read several threads when trying to decide if daisy needed a new friend. I waited to see how she got on and she was always a grumbly bully (prob not helped by her ovarian cysts) gertrude died in August and it's taken me some time to be able to write she had gone so daisy has been without a friend for nearly 3 months now and she is really her best self, she seems to have realised there is no more having to share, and she is so much more chatty, friendly, excited than ever. However I am in a privileged situation that I am with her all day and night I work at home in the same room as her and she is oddly rather comfy with our very soft old labrador. They often sleep near each other (separated of course by her protected wall) she doesn't even go near her soft toy pig that has gertrudes scent on anymore. To be honest I think she's pleased when I go off to bed so she gets some peace! Lol. If anything changed in her behaviour i would def seek a rescue to find a friend. Thank you again x

Wishing you and sweet Daisy and your lovely lab all the best ♥️
