Mysterious Case Of Bloat

Was she given antibiotics by the vet today?

Is it from her urine or poo do you know? Looks like bloody mucous on her stools.

How is she in herself?

If she keeps bleeding please have her see a vet ASAP.

She may need an X-ray to check for bladder stones and/or an ultrasound to check her reproductive and digestive tract to try and find the cause of the bleeding. Poor girl X

We didn't get any antibiotics ... the vet wants to wait a little until her stomach was back to normal before going for it with the baytril. The vet said to just pop by and pick some up any time I felt that the uri was getting any worse.
So all she had yesterday was a bit of fibraplex and she was eating fine.

Yes I think it's blood mucus in the stool. But she has had an X-ray (or 2) and her stool sample tested last week and both came back as clear.
It was her first good sized poo do you think maybe she's torn something? Her stomach is still gurgling.
This really is just the worst few months.

If she needs to go back on antibiotics again, could you ask for Septrin as it's not as harsh on the stomach as Baytril?

Id get her back to the vet. Has there been anymore blood?

I emailed the photo across to the vet and she has contacted the guide pig specialist in Manchester again. No more blood since though. She's a bit out of sorts but not that much more than last week.

The septrim didn't seem to sort out the uri last time, both pigs had 4 weeks of it. My vet went back through glitch's history and saw that baytrill had always worked before so she'd like to try that again. Glitch has always had respiratory infections... I got her as a tiny piggy from pets at home because I could see she was poorly. I'm pretty sure she carries one of the kennel cough bacteria (which is common in pets at home) And when she gets stressed it often reappears.

Hi lily and rose, it was septrim (or sulfatrim) that they were on before when they got bloat. Fairly certain it's not the right antibiotic as the infection lingered.

I just wanted to express a final thanks to everyone on this thread for helping Glitch through the bloat. For anyone else reading this if you catch it early enough, warmth and vibrating pads, some rough fibre, loads of good quality hay and aviproplus (+other probiotics) will do the trick.

Unfortunately Glitch has since developed a huge abscess on her chin (found the culprit, a wicker basket with a sharp broken off twig). We've tried the antibiotics again but that hasn't shrunk it so tomorrow the vet is operating. Fingers crossed she'll make it through. x

Got my fingers crossed for glitch to make a speedy recovery xx

Hi there,

Yes she did! The abscess was too big to remove so they drained it and we flushed it for 2 days, but then the hole closed up. We have continued on painkillers and baytrill (which she doesn't see m to be having any reaction to yet!). I don't want to speak to soon, but I think, possibly, the remaining puss has gone. She's enjoyed a couple of 10 minute grass sessions so far and she seems super happy!

On the other hand - she's now peeing blood. Very very red blood. This happened when she had the bloat and I took a picture to the vet who wasn't sure what to do. I'm almost certain it can't be an infection as she's been pumped full of every kind of antibiotic for the last few months. As a result though she was on reduced veg, and I maybe haven't been the most attentive with what vegetables she has been getting in an attempt to keep her vit C levels up. Her wee is extremely sludgy but her xray didn't show any stones. I fear too much carrot and spinach leaf may have contributed to this sludgy wee. I'm now following the low sodium/potassium diet and as she's always been rubbish at drinking water I've increased the cucumber (her favourite!) in the hope to dilute her wee a bit.
She doesn't wheek in pain when weeing (although she is on painkillers so that could be why).

Anyway, that's my update. Hopefully the peeing blood/sludge can be sorted with home remedies. Guinealynx has lots of possible advice. I'll update if anything works particularly well, although any advice is always welcomed!

I'm glad that Glitch has been doing well. One of my pigs gets recurrent cystitis and she won't ever drink from her bottle, so I have to syringe feed her water. She drinks loads of water that way.

That's a good idea. We took her to the vets today and she had an X-ray and they tested her wee. Some bacteria, no bladder stones visible. Trying the Bactrim instead of baytrill for a few days to see if it clears up. Very nervous about having used both antibiotics and upsetting her tummy even more. Very worried the bloat will come back. Part of me wonders if putting all this medication in her is the actual issue.
