My Pond

@alpacasqueak . It's a very old trick I learnt from my Dad, I think he got the idea from a book on fish pond management in the days before the internet!
My gran had a very successful fish pond in her garden and she used the ball trick to keep a hole in the water when the pond froze over in the winter. The fish used to pop up in the hole when she dropped their fish food in for them.

Sorry to take so long to reply, I've been away.
It's very little work in the winter. We don't often get it cold enough to freeze the pond here but just in case I put a football in it. The water freezes round the ball which I lift out during the day to let gasses out of the pond. The ball goes back in at night to stop the hole freezing over.
Thank you! Good idea! Looking forward to creating the pond! It's not a nice thing when the fish/loaches have outgrown the tank and I can't really fit a bigger one in the lounge so a pond seems like the next next best thing :)

I don't know how long it's been there it would have been hidden under weed, the fish have been chasing hard and the weed has floated away from the corner where it is usually.
I am sorry you only have a male this year. I think this frog has come from a pond a couple of houses away. I just hope we don't end up in a couple of years with a pond full of jelly and hundreds of frogs like my parents did. A lot of their fish died, you can have too much of a good thing!

All the worry about the hot weather and piggies, now it's the pond! The pump has broken today, realised the water had stopped running sometime this afternoon, too late to get to the aquatic shop 2 miles away before they closed. Luckily I have a solar air stone that is fully charged, the battery should hold enough charge to keep it going all night. I decided to get a solar charged air stone after my parents pump stopped due to a power cut on a very humid thundery night and several of their fish died.

I hope you can get a new pump tomorrow 🤞
Thank you.
If the walking distance shop doesn't have one suitable my partner has said he will drive me to the big pond centre about 10 miles away. Not brilliant timing with the traffic on a Saturday but these things never happen when it's convenient!

I have a major job to do this spring, that’s to chop up and re-pot my water lily. It’s got so big it’s now swamping the whole pond. Dreading it, it’s such a messy, mucky job!
I don't envy you that job, the smell around pond plant roots is :vom: I think I'll be alright this year but suspect mine will need doing next year.

Yes it’s the worst job in the world! Like you say the smell is utterly vile 🤢
