My Pig Has Been Attacked By A Cat

One of our guinea pigs was attacked and carried off by a large cat 2 days ago. It was an awful sight hearing Butterscotch squealing and watching my 8 year old son chasing after the cat who managed to escape with Butterscotch under the garden fence. We spent the next 2 hours frantically searching neighbours gardens and finally found her badly injured with puncture wounds to her neck. She was in shock and not moving much. After being advised about the danger of cat bites I decided to take her to the out of hours vets rather than wait until the morning. He gave fluids and started anti biotics and advised that I syringe water and baby food. 2 days on Butterscotch is taking small amounts of fluid and has today started to nibble on cucumber and apple. I am keeping her in a separate box to her companion Hetty but have been putting her on the floor where she will make attempts at slowly walking around. She will not eat unless encouraged and after refusing for 10 minutes will suddenly nibble furiously for a couple of minutes. She is still on antibiotics. Butterscotch is obviously traumatised and I'm worried that she may not fully recover or start eating again under her own steam. I would really appreciate any advice and am wondering if anyone else has experienced this before and what the outcome was. Thank you

Is she on any pain relief?

It's great that you are syringing fluids but you also need to syringe food while she is still eating only small amounts, this thread should help

What antibiotics is she on? she will need probiotics too to help the gut which are covered in the above thread.

I am so sorry you have had to go through this! It's not something that you can forget about :(. It must of been awful for you.

How did the cat access your piggie? Was he in the garden? You need to make sure all hutches and runs are very secure for future reference.

You piggie definitely won't forget the ordeal and it will take her a long time to regain her confidence unfortunately. It's good that she has began to eat again. Keep talking to her gently and offering her veggies. All my luck x
 
Oh my god, I am so sorry, truly awful.

As Helen as recommended above is she on any pain relief? This would be vital at moment, also as Helen as advised you could do with some syringe food. Are you UK based or from overseas?
 
Thank you for your replies and kind wishes. I will continue with the syringing and will read up on the thread. She is on enrofloxucin, and I will look into getting a pro biotic.
Butterscotch was in the flower bed at the time we have always allowed the pigs to have a good run and adventure in the garden but only when we are close by, my son and I had returned inside for a few minutes when the attack happened. We certainly wont be letting them outside again to run free. They live inside the house all year round, and during the winter months they run around on the floor so they can exercise.
I'm wondering when will be best to return Butterscotch to her cage to be with Hetty, they get on well and wonder if the company and normality might speed up her recovery ? X
 
She is not on any pain relief , does this have to be prescribed by a vet or can it be bought over the counter .? I am uk based in Dorset. X
 
Enrofloxucin is baytril I believe and is an antibiotic. Please get in touch with your vet and ask for pain relief also, pain stops piggies from eating which can then lead to slowness in the guts. An anti inflammatory Pain killer such as metacam is commonly prescribed for piggies.
 
The pain relief is a dog / cat medication called either Metacam or Loxicom. It can only be bought from the vets I'm afraid, so if you give them a call I'm sure they will give you some :)
 
Ok she's on Baytril so the probiotics are very important as it is notorious for affecting the gut.

Pain relief should ideally come from the vets. They should hopefully agree to it over the phone and you can just pick it up.

I personally would put them back together.
 
Pain relief Has to be prescribed by vets, honestly it will make her feel much better, she will be in some pain I would imagine.

Oh my goodness, what a traumatic ordeal for all of you. I can't offer any more advise to you other than what you've already been told but I do want to wish you all the best and a speedy recovery to Butterscotch, hopefully with lots of TLC she will heal well and not be too traumatised x
 
Oh I'm so sorry. Poor Butterscotch. I'm glad you were able to find her and get her to a vet.

I wish her well and hope she will be able to get over the attack with you and her piggie friends help.

How traumatic for you all! I'd be in bits if that happened to one of my piggies!
I expect shes still in quite a bit of shock as well as pain like others have mentioned, I hope she bounces back in no time though and makes a good recovery!
 
Hi all Butterscotch is alot better today I have started her on pain relief and a pro biotic. I feel more confident with syringe feeding after looking at the above posts and have managed to get plenty of fluids and pureed food into her. In addition she has been eating some broccoli and had some pellets when I put her back in the cage with Hetty. She is still very shocked but walking around slowly. Thanks to all of you for your helpful advice and kind wishes. Xx

That's good, sounds like she will get over it.

Poor thing, glad she is feeling better, if they start eating that is a good sigh
