Hi, I'm new to this forum and to Guinea Pigs. About a month ago we bought two female guinea pigs about 6 weeks old. They are named Kwan and Yin. I don't know what breeds they are but they are two different types. Yin, the one with a black eye, is the boss and is very active....she also sings all the time. She sounds just like a bird singing. I've read we are very lucky to have a singing guinea pig. Kwan, the all white one, is very still and quiet.

Both eat a lot, are very clean and jump about their cage and they seem to be quite attached one to the other.

Neither likes to leave her cage however. When picked up and petted they will both purr but they do not like to be taken out. If put on the floor with the cage door open they will both run back inside as quickly as possible.

Is there something to be done to make them more excited about play time out of the cage...have we done something wrong or do some guinea pigs just not like to be in open areas?

Thanks all.

welcome to the forum:)p

you will need to be patient and give them time to settle in. make sure when you walk by them you talk softly to them to let them know you are approaching. when they are out during playtime, let them have shelter. you can use boxes, towels, paper bags, pigloos, etc. make them feel at home. the first few times, they will not be used to it. give them some time, they will explore. if they don't, consider putting some kind of protection over their heads so they feel safe. i made a cardboard run. it is basically cardboard land:)) i have tunnels and boxes, and i usually put towels on the cardboard, but here you can see i have newspaper. hope i helped:)

Give them some time, most piggies do not like "open areas" they will want to run and hide immediately. Talk to them alot, even if just to say "hi babies, whatcha doin? Your so pretty" etc... Nice calm soothing voices so that they get used to you. My piggies love my couch now, but at first they just sat there frozen. Now they run around on it and hide under the pillows...

ILoveGilbertTheGuineaPig : I love your cardboard castle! I just might have to try that for mine!

Just an update

We bought them a new 4 level cage and some artificial grass to sit on while we took them into the living room to be with us. Now we leave the cage door open and both of them come out on their own and play about the house. They go back into their cage when they have had enough fun.

All is as well as can be....thanks for your help.

When I first got my piggies (Pinky and Perky) they were very timid and didn't really6 like to be handled, we have had them for about 4 1/2 years and now they don't mind coming out and like to explore. All you need to do is be gentle and quiet around them and speak in a quiet voice. Eventually they will love come to play time.
I also love the carboard play castle, it's great! Is the floor made of cardboard? How big is it (It looks massive!) an we have more pics of it please!

Thanks for the ideas.

I am certainly going to try the "castle". I'm sure Kwan and Yin will thank you too.
