Take CCT advise,I dont think so.

Anyone heard of using Ivermectin on piggies then ? Anyone thought about where the original trials were done many years ago, before they slag off the work of the CCT? Or other techniques that people on here take for granted, like checking back teeth without anaesthetic?

I don’t agree with all the stuff that comes out of CCT but Vedra’s contribution to cavy care can’t just be dismissed.

Also the CCT was certainly closely supervised by a qualified vet when it was set up as, if my memory serves me right, Vedra was married to a vet.

A couple of weeks ago I took Nibbles to my vet who is apparently trained in small animals, she suggested sedation or anesthetic to clip his back teeth. I then took him to Vedra wh used her brucal
seperater gadget (which I believe she invented) to do his teeth, & treated him for a fungal condition
which was making him ill but been overlooked because of another problem. He was very underweight
& more poorly than I'd realised, I doubt he would have survived an anesthetic. He's now much more
lively, gaining weight & definately on the mend. I only paid for the medicines, & I phoned for advice
whenever I was worried. & I'm sorry if not everyone agrees but the Flea or Die did actually work, both
my gps had mites quite badly, I had to use it weekly for 3 weeks & changed from hay bedding to
soft straw & ready grass & they've been clear since.
The late David Gurney seemed full of admiration for Vedra & her knowledge of cavies & thats recommendation enough for me.

The name is Peter not David. He was a very good friend of mine.

Yes Vedra did start out well and did a lot to improve gp care,I admire her for that.

Sadly, like a lot of charities she tried to expand too much and put too much emphazies on getting money. The BAR course is just a rip off to get money.

Peter was years ago, closely associated with CCT and did a lot to help them.A lot of the research was actually done by Peter rather than Vedra ,although in a llot of cases Vedra took the credit.

In later years Peter became disalusioned with CCT as he did not like the way it was going.

Peter had an excellant forum on his health page website, but had such a lot of trouble caused by CCT members, that he had to close it on the advise of the police..It was very nasty.

It is Peter Gurney who has put gps on the map,not CCT.

That is a shame that the forum had to close Mary. I don't understand it, guineas are such gentle and loving creatures why should the care of them cause so much anger within certain groups. Without them I wouldn't have made many wonderful friends. It's silly to get in a tizzy I think. :)

Louise, i would call it more then just a "tizzy" when it involves vedra defrauding genuine guinea pig lovers out of their money, with her so called courses!.

I was speaking across forums, I've seen people get rattled over nothing and force opinions on others, no need for it at all.

Of course if people have been done out of money then the police or a solicitor should be called.

I have to agree with Aya on this one.The course work is advertised as Open University type.I applied years ago (when the course was first started )it was very expensive and the work sent to me was appalling. There were stereotyped and some of the diagrams were so smudged they were useless.I had to get my own books and do independent study.I worked hard on this and when I went to do the exam, which cost more money, plus train fare and taxi fare,I discovered from other people there that I had not been sent all of the course work, there were 4 pages missing from my folder!.Vedra told me ,quite unconcernedly, that I would be unable to sit the exam!.I told her that after spending all that time and money on travelling,I was going to try the exam. She had to give in and let me do it..Quite honestly an intelligent 5 year old could have ans werered most of the questions.I finished the papers very quickly as did a few others. There were 7 of us.The other ladies said the same, all that studying was a waste of time. The exam papers are set by Vedra and checked by her. There is no proper examination board involved.the BAR is not recognised by any ex amening board or educational authority and is not recognised by the RCVS or any veterinary body.

I actually got an A Honors for the exam, but that is no honour because it was so simple.

This was years ago and the course work may be improved, but I have seen recent sample and was horrified by the information it contained. Some of it dangerous.

It also annoys ne that6 CCT is advertised as a veterinary hospital. There is and has never been a hospital.Vedra has always worked from home with the help of volunteers.

CCT were prosecuted a few years ago and it was Peter who prevented Vedra from going to jail. She had to promise to have a vet on the premises to treat the gps. This only happened for a short time.

I haven't had many dealings with them as I'm so far away but saw the "book" on guinea pig health. Full of spelling mistakes and basic errors. Put me right off.

It's good to have these warnings. So thanks for sharing them Mary! :)

thank you very much indeed for sharing that Mary, I didn't realise the CCT was so...well it all seems professional from the outside, all above board etc, when I read that I seem to think not. Why was Vedra prosecuted? Did someone 'shop her in' for illegal treating of animals?

I was considering taking that BAR course in a few years when I have more time and money, but will not be wasting either now!

Thanks for the link,I have not seen this before.

It does seem that Peter was supporting CCT over this, but this is on going since the prosecution,so I suppose he had to continue to supprt them because of his own fight with the RCVS.

I think in a way,Peter may have done the wrong thing in fighting the vetinary profession,I think it far better to try and educate vets to understand that gps are as importnant to the owners as dogs and cats, and they want proper care for them,.

Vets do have 6 or 7 years trainiing and we need this expertise when a piggy is sick.I am lucky in having a vet that although knew nothing about gps when I met her,was interested in them and willing to learn. There are more and more vets now who are starting to show an interest in smaller animals, they need to be encouraged, not fought against.

sorry for bumping this thread up. I took my piggie to Vedra this week (she actually lives in the same village as me) and sadly my pig passed away. but now i dont know whether to trust her or not. I didnt know any of this, obviously i knew she wasn't a vet but i thought she was an expert in the field

Sorry to hear your piggy has passed over to rainbow bridge. x

Kiraroo, sorry you lost your piggie.
I now take my pigs to a local vet thats a gp & rabbit specialist because Vedra is an hour away, but I still go to her sometimes, my vet knows of her, respects her expertise, & was fine with her advice. Not everyone may agree with all her advice, but it seems theres alot of vets around that know less about gp's than her. I'm sure for every person that knocks her there's plenty more that trust her & have been helped by her when they had no-where else to go.
