I am really worrying about my pigs.

They have both had spray treatment for mites but after examining them this morning found that they are still covered in dry flakey skin and it just doesn't seem to have worked. I have read on here that an injection might be a better option although both vets around my area aren't guineapig savvy! What can I ask for?

Also Barry had a lump on his behind and the vet said it was a swollen gland and to just keep my eye on it. After looking today I noticed he has another one lower down towards his bum but it's harder. I sound everso silly but I compared to Alan's behind and I'm worrying I might be poking around his spine!

A guineapigs rear end has a scent gland I know and also their bottom but Barry's just feels different.....

Normal insecticidal spray does NOT work on mites - you need ivermectin (topical, oral or injection); at least three rounds about 10 days apart. I have had mine injected; that way they can't groom it off each other.

You can ask your vets to have scales and skin analysed to make sure that it IS mites. I had a problem last year where a persistent scaly skin problem turned out to be neither mites nor ringworm (fungus). Lab reports are not cheap, though!

Sorry, I can't help you with the lumps, as I can't see or feel them.

Thank you for your reply. The spray was Ivemectin (Think that may have been spelt wrong!) and they had their three doses.

I am so tempted to bring my piggyc back inside, I miss them and seeing them everytime I walk into the kitchen. I have been so busy this week at work and feel I have neglected them cuddle wise!

Think I'm going to bring them in at the weekend!

Sounds like same syptoms mine have just had, that turned out to be mites, and my guineas have just had three doses of ivermectin in injection form 7 days apart as this is supposed to work best on resolving the problem. I also tried the spot on treatment, but some mites can burrow beneath the skin surface.

I think I'm going to call the vets this pm.

I think the piggys could do with a bath and then try the spray again, maybe I made the mistake not bathing them to get rid of any that had been killed by the spray :{

Have you tried Taverham vets? we have taken ours there on many occations, i would definitely recommend them.

I'd get Xeno for mange.
But mind you don't put too much on their skin. 3 doses of Xeno over 3 weeks

I give Lentil a bath with Nizoral about once a month as he gets a bit of dandruffy skin and then it soon goes and hes fine - I just do it as a precaution.

If ivermectin hasn't worked, it's not mites, I would recommend trying a fungal shampoo like nizoral which you can get from a regular pharmacy. Just say that it's your OH who has a dandruff problem!
If the dandruff is bad, try bathing every three days, otherwise once weekly.

In boots I can get Nizoral off the shelf without going to the pharmacy counter but if I do they never ask me what its about.
