Hey all,

I posted previously about Bill's mites, and he underwent treatment with the vet (1 injection and 2 oral doses of ivermectin). He seems to have been better recently, but starting twitching and squeaking again today whilst I was handling him.

Are there any recommended shampoos for mites which might help this time? I will take him back to the vets if I have to, but the previous visits clearly haven't sorted the problem.

Just to clarify as well, he has no sores and isn't losing any more hair than normal (he malts quite a bit). So perhaps not mange mites? I've seen cat flea shampoo recommended...

Thanks,
David.

Hi David,

I think bathing in an anti-fungal shampoo would be a good step to take next. Skin sensitivity can be down to mites, but fungal infections can also be to blame. Even if the problem doesn't seem to be fungal, a bath will help to clean up the skin - especially after the mites problem.

Personally I would give Bill a good bath in some Nizoral shampoo - wash and rinse, then lather up and soak for 3-5 minutes before rinsing - and see if there's any improvement in the days following the bath.

hi

i agree with laura-ccc4 Nizoral shampoo is great use it on my jake as it really suits him & leaves his hair all shiney & soft plus smells great on him

Gorgeous guineas seems to be mentioned a lot.

I also use Beaphar Spot on for small animals. I have found this works a treat. From got pet shops, but if you're desparate they sell it a Pets at Home.

I also, through experience, find viliglence the best prevetion.

Some owners also swear by xeno 450, you can buy it online or from your vets.

Thanks everyone - I went to the local pet shop, but the best they had was 'Johnson's Insecticidal Shampoo', which is for small animals like rabbits and guinea pigs. Apparently treats mites, lice and fleas, so shall give it a go!

Having never had a bath before, I can safetly predict Bill won't enjoy it! :)p
