Hi,
My guinea pigs are scratching a lot and I think they have mites. I have seen several mites in thier fur. I took them to the vets but the vets are useless and said unless I show them the mites they won't believe me! Do you recommend Beapher anti parasite spot ons or My little Friend flea spot on or a different one!

Thanks!

Personally I wouldn't touch anything like that which doesn't come from a vet. So many horror stories of over the counter medication etc that has poisoned animals. I just couldn't risk it :(

I would strongly recommend to use neither! Shop treatments are too low dosed to really clear mites, they are only geared towards the general prevention of a wider spectrum of parasites, which ideally need different treatments when acute.

Please see a vet for a proper diagnosis and a good quality product that is appropriate for their age/weight. You always need to exclude a fungal diagnosis and should never treat just on spec, as that can easily make things much worse.

A full mites treatment consists of at least 3 rounds of a good quality ivermectin product, spaced 1-2 weeks apart in order to catch any emerging eggs from the Skin and prevent a return. It is well worth doing the job properly as mange mites can kill if under- or mistreated.

Thanks, I know a different vet surgery from the same company. Are the pets@home vets any good?

It varies to be honest some are bad, some are good, it depends on the actual vet rather than the company. You could have a look at our recommended vets locator.

I did see some mites. The vet told me to catch them on sellotape but I found this impossible !

If you can't find one local on the vet locator, it pays to ring round all in an area asking if they have any vets who have an interest or knowledge of guineas. This is how we found our vet who is amazing.

Just been to vet and has given piggies mite treatment. Hopefully that will clear the mites out!
