Mike's baytril - advice please

Mike went really downhill last night. When i lifted him out of his hay this morning, he looked as if he was in his last moments tbh.

However, he took his baytril and also managed some critical care. Then, amazingly, he started eating some mint very slowly.

I put in an additional c.c. feed this afternoon which he managed. Then he went straight back to hide in his hay.

However, he has popped out again and is munching a bit of kale.

I'm not hopeful he will make it through til monday. And even if he does, i think euthanasia might be the kindest way.

He seems comfortable though, resting and eating when he can.

Omg! How stressful is this with sick piggies! Mike is now chomping away vigorously at a stickle hay thing attached to the cage side.

Just swinging from death's door to fighting on all in the space of an hour or two.

Sick piggies are incredibly stressful. I hope he can make a full recovery, sending Mike lots of healing vibes and hugs to you.

Thank you @piggieminder. It would be a true miracle if he can come back from this but if the vet thinks he could, i will give him the chance. He is a slightly older pig (4yr 10month) and i dont feel he is in any shape to undergo any operations for these lumps.

If there isnt an alternative anti biotic that can take effect pronto, i cannot see a good outcome now.

But . . . .you never know!

I dont think mike will make it through tonight. Thought he had gone at 10pm tonight but he is still here.

10pm i gave him his baytril. He looked very floppy and his eye is very bad. One eye looks normal, the other now bright red as if full of blood.

He sort of threw himself onto his side and stretched out after the baytril. I really thought that was him gone but he was still breathing. I watched, fully expecting him to stop breathing and then he quickly righted himself and his mouth started chewing vigourously.

I had the critical care ready to give so i tried it and he ate most of it!

When i put him back in the cage, he can still walk. So he can still walk and swallow - he cant have had a little stroke there can he?

Anyway he went back to hide in his hay. I can see just enough of him sticking out to see he is still breathing. His breathing is regular and normal speed and he has food in his system plus baytril.

And his cagemate there so I'm sure he will pass away during the night.

He was looking so much better on Tuesday there, but huge decline since then.

Oh dear:( Sadly, mike is still alive this morning but only just. He is closing down now.

Belle, his cagemate, was very reluctant to let me get to him this morning. He was in the hay and she was blocking him. I moved her just to check if he had died.

He was still alive, not able to stand now though. I put him back with belle and she is nosing him and close to him.

Is that the kindest way now? I'm in a real pickle. Should i get him euthanased? Could this take long?

He is doing little twitches. I just dont know if it is kinder now to leave him lying in the hay or to get him along for euthanasia.

Belle has now left him and is eating on the lower storey. Mike is just lying with his face in the hay burrowed in.

Is it kinder to leave him be just to pass away naturally?

Thanks everyone.

Mike has been buried in the garden. The c&c they were in was huge. 6 x2 ft and 2 storey.

So i have moved belle into a ferplast cage we have. It is still a big 2 pig one so lots of room. We moved her into our dining room. From the kitchen.

She is eating well and looking very lively so hopefully she will remain well. She is much younger - she will be 2yrs in january.

Do you think she will manage ok for a month or so until i can get a companion for her?

I really do not want to go to pets at home. I have never bought from a pet shop before and dont intend to.

I have messaged ayrs g.p. rescue. They are closed sundays and not te homing til 8th january.

I hope they have someone for belle! I think that might be my nearest rescue. I am just south of perth in scotland.

I'm not even sure if i can travel out of area for a new pig. The whole of scotland will lockdown on boxing day.

What a pickle to be in. . . .

This guide will help on how to look after her Looking After A Bereaved Guinea Pig

Generally speaking, she will be ok for a few weeks while you find a new companion for her. I would get in contact with the Ayr rescue and see what they say/have available.
