Specialist Max Is Squeaking When He Wees

Poor Max.

Some of you may recall he had a bladder stone removed recently ...

The stone was removed from his urethra so, it was a big op but he seemed to have recovered well .


However, I have recently noticed that he is squeaking when he wees.

ALSO, I have noticed blood on their bedding on 2 occasions recently. One of my trio has passed haematuria . I have had them out in separate containers 3 times but, each time I have done this, they have all passed clear urine.
 
could his meds have been stopped too soon? it takes the bladder walls a long time to heal from 'just' cystitis, so i imagine having a stone removed could take even longer? i've no experience with stones though, although my ches did have very bad sludge at one stage.

i have heard that stones can form again very quickly but i hope it isn't that. i'd be inclined to think the swelling hadn't fully gone though, but again, i'm not an expert. didn't want to read and not reply.

i'd probably let the vet know what is happening and see what they think. typical you need to ask on a sunday!

Thanks for the reply.

I took urine samples from all 3 up to the vet this morning. I'm still waiting for a call back from the vet. Had a friend round this afternoon and Max wee'd on her without squeaking (thanks Max!) . We're wondering whether he had another small stone which he has passed . I don't want to do too much guess work - I'm not 100% sure which of my guinea pigs had haematuria yesterday .

I'd appreciate everyone's views as this will help me when I get to talk to the vet.

hopefully all three samples won't show any traces of blood. fingers crossed.

i seem to remember reading recently that the occasional squeaking is common in cases involving the bladder area, even when the majority of inflammation or infection has gone. i guess it can be up and down really, especially something like swelling.

i'd definitely ask the vet about whether the course of anti-inflammatory/pain relief was long enough though.
 
I do hope Max will be OK. Best to get the vet to check it out. My Peanut Butter, whom I got at only 4 weeks old, has been a very sickly boy on & off, but is still going strong at 3 years of age. Probably because I rush him to the vet the minute he squeals in pain when toileting! Fortunately the vet practice just down the road is open 24 hours so I can get him immediate pain relief & then book his appt with the guinea pig vet they have.
 
Agree that he may still need anti-inflammatories, also is he on anything like Cystease or vegan Glucosamine? as this will help protect the bladder wall.

Peanut Butter is lucky to have you as his owner - and you are so lucky to have a 24 hour vet so close.

We haven't got an exotics vet nearby and I am trying to balance prompt treatment with specialist treatment .Max recently had a hay poke and the vet was considering referring him on to an exotics vet in Dronfield. I think I will ask whether he can be referred there for his bladder management too.

I'm afraid Max isn't on Cystease or Glucosamine yet @helen105281 . Is this a prescription item?

We don't have Cystease here, but at Wiebke's suggestion I managed to find vegetarian glucosamine in capsule form online. No script needed. I then open the capsules & mix the powder with water & syringe it into PB. He was on it for 6 months & it seemed to really help him. I always keep some on hand now & the minute he squeals when toileting he starts getting his dose.
 
vets can prescribe cerenia aswell which is excellent at protecting the bladder walls (works in a different way to metacam so giving both really covers things well)

i think seeing the specialist vet would be the most beneficial to your little one after an op like this :)
 
So sorry to hear about Max, I have found the glucosamine helpful in some of my bladder pigs (less so for boars than sows for some reason?). I have also had a pig that had intermittent haematuria, often after a trip to the vet. I assume it was a stress effect.
I use a very good vet in Alfreton ( Claire Bush or Ellie Whitehead at Alfreton park veterinary hospital) but will be interested to see what you think of the vet in Dronfield as it is a bit closer. Good luck xx

Everything seems to have settled at the moment. I spoke to me regular vet who was happy with his and Bess''s urine results. The vet is also happy for me to go to Dronfield for a 2nd opinion.
